How do I help my partner when they are burnt out?

If your partner talks about not wanting to be here, or not being able to go on, read the box below first.

WRITTEN FOR THE PERSON STANDING NEXT TO IT

They come home and sit in silence. In the car, ten minutes. Twenty. Then they come in, say they are fine, and go straight to bed.

This page is about your side of that. It will not tell you what your partner is. That would be a verdict about someone who never opened a file here.

It will show you the shape of an exhaustion that rest does not seem to touch. Then it will show you what help lands, and what help only adds weight.

    Before anything else

This goes first. Being worn out is not the same as not wanting to be alive. Sometimes one turns into the other, and the person beside them hears it first.

If your partner says they cannot go on, that people would be better off without them, or that they want to disappear, act on it today. Ask them plainly. Asking does not plant the idea.

    In the United States:

988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.

Crisis Text Line. Text HOME to 741741, if a call is the part you cannot do.

    Emergency services: 911.

You can call the Lifeline about somebody else, and that includes your partner.

If none of that is where you are, keep reading. What follows is about a person who is empty, and the person who lives with them.

    What you are actually seeing

The work still gets done. That is the strange part. They hit every deadline, answer every message, and have nothing left by seven.

A weekend off does not refill them. A holiday helps for two days. Then the laptop is open on the third, because one thing could not wait.

At home they are flat. Short with you over small things. Asleep on the sofa by nine, then awake at three. They say it will ease off after this project. There is always another project.

What the exhaustion may be guarding

Some exhaustion comes from the load. Some comes from a standard that never lets the load be done. The second kind does not lift when the load does.

A standard like that can be doing a job. While the work is still being fixed, nobody can say it was not good enough. Stopping turns it into a fact.

You cannot see from the kitchen which kind your partner is carrying, and this page cannot either. It may be the job. It may be the bar. It may be both.

The work is not too much for them. The work is never allowed to be enough.

    What this is not about

It is not about you. The flatness at dinner is not a review of the marriage. It is what is left after the day took the rest.

It is not about how much they love you. A person can love you and have nothing to give at nine at night. Both are true at once.

And it is not yours to fix. You cannot rest for them. You cannot lower a standard that runs in somebody else. Trying to do either will cost you, and it will not reach them.

    What happens in your body

Notice what happens in you when they say they are fine and go to bed. A tight jaw. A heavy chest. A pull to say something, or to say nothing at all.

    [MECHANISM]

That tightening is a body signal, the first physical sign that your own pattern is starting. It comes a few seconds before you act.

What follows is your usual response. A list of fixes. Taking over one more job. A sharp line about the laptop. Going quiet and keeping score.

Each one feels like help or like fairness. Most of them land as one more thing they have to manage.

What is actually in your control

Ask one plain question, once, on a calm day. What would make tomorrow lighter? Then do that one thing, and nothing else they did not ask for.

Take one thing off the table and keep it off. Not ten things. One, done without comment, every time. A job they never have to think about again is worth more than a speech.

Do not audit the rest. Do not check whether they really switched off. Rest that is being watched is one more thing to get right.

Keep your own life running. Your friends, your sleep, your evenings. A partner who is empty cannot fill you either, and that is not a fault in them. It is just arithmetic.

And one thing is not in your control: how long this lasts. No page can give you a date, and anybody who does is guessing.

    What this is costing you

Check what has changed in you. Whether you plan evenings around their mood. Whether you have stopped telling them your own bad days, so they do not have one more thing. Whether you are tired too, and nobody has asked.

Carrying a house beside an empty person is real work. Count it. It does not show up anywhere else.

How do I help my partner when they are burnt out?

Help with the load, not the person. Take one job off them for good and do not mention it. Ask once what would make tomorrow lighter, then do only that. Skip the advice about rest. Skip the questions about whether they have switched off. Keep your own life going, so they are not carrying your evenings too. Whether it is a boyfriend, a wife or a husband, the shape is the same: less to manage, nothing new to get right.

How do I support a partner who is burnt out?

Support is mostly what you stop doing. Stop checking. Stop suggesting. Stop keeping score out loud. Then be steady in the room: the same time for dinner, the same calm voice, no review of their day unless they start it. If they talk about not wanting to go on, that outranks all of this. The box at the top of this page comes first.

What do I do when my partner is burned out?

Start with your own response. Notice the tight jaw when they say they are fine, and wait a few seconds before you answer. Then choose one small, quiet action instead of a fix. Suggest their doctor once, plainly, if sleep, eating or mood keep sliding. You do not need to be sure something is wrong to say it. Then leave the decision with them.

If this is you rather than them

There is a file in this archive about the person whose work is never quite finished. The Perfectionism Trap is the pattern where an unfinished thing cannot be judged, so it is never let go. You may have read this page and seen yourself in the car, not them.

Do you redo things that were already good, or work late because one part was not right? Then that file may be yours, and it is the one pattern here you can work on directly.

    THE FIRST-PERSON FILE

The shape described on this page is filed as The Perfectionism Trap. That file is written in the second person, for whoever is running it, about their own body. It is not a verdict about anybody else, and nobody can read it on someone else's behalf.

If this is you rather than them: Why can't I finish anything?

    Questions people ask about this

How do I help my burnt out boyfriend?

Take one job off him for good and do not mention it. Ask once what would make tomorrow lighter, then do only that. Skip the advice and the checking.

How do I help my wife when she is burnt out?

The same way: less to manage, nothing new to get right. One job off her plate, done without comment. Keep your own evenings going so she is not carrying yours.

How do I help my husband who is burnt out?

Ask one plain question on a calm day: what would make tomorrow lighter? Do that, and nothing he did not ask for. Rest that is being watched is one more task.

Why does rest not seem to help my partner?

Some exhaustion comes from the load, and some from a standard that never lets the load be done. The second kind does not lift when the load does. This page cannot say which your partner carries.

Is it my fault my partner is burnt out?

That is a verdict, and this method does not give them. The flatness at dinner is not a review of you. It is what is left after the day took the rest.

What should I not say to a burnt out partner?

Skip the list of fixes, the advice about rest, and the comment about the laptop. Each one lands as one more thing to manage. One calm question is enough.

Should I tell my partner to quit their job?

That is their decision, and a push from you can feel like one more demand. You can say once, plainly, that you would back them whatever they choose.

How long does it take a partner to recover from being burnt out?

No page can give you a date, and anybody who does is guessing. What you can change is what the house asks of them in the meantime.

When should my partner see a doctor?

If sleep, eating or mood keep sliding, or if you simply cannot settle about it. Say it once, plainly. You do not need to be sure something is wrong.

What if my partner says they cannot go on?

Act today. Ask them plainly what they mean. In the United States, call or text 988, and you can call about your partner. Text HOME to 741741. Emergency services, 911.

I am exhausted too. Is that allowed?

Yes. Carrying a house beside an empty person is real work, and it does not get counted anywhere. Keep your own sleep, friends and evenings. That is not selfish. It is arithmetic.

    THE ARCHIVES

You cannot open their file. You can open yours. The assessment names the pattern running in you while you carried the house, and it costs nothing.
