What do I do about a boss who explodes over small things?

WRITTEN FOR THE PERSON STANDING NEXT TO IT

The useful answer here is not psychological. It is procedural, it is boring, and it protects you in a way that understanding somebody's threshold never will.

So this page does that part first and does not dress it up. The pattern material is at the bottom, it is narrow, and it is about you rather than about them.

The part that actually protects you

Write it down. Date, time, who was present, what was said, in plain words with no interpretation attached. A contemporaneous note is the single most useful thing available to somebody in this position and almost nobody starts early enough.

Keep it somewhere that is not their system. Not the work laptop, not the work account, not a shared drive. This is not paranoia, it is the ordinary advice anybody who handles employment matters gives, and people are routinely locked out of their own record on the day it becomes relevant.

Find out what your route is before you need it. In most places that means somebody in human resources, a union representative if you have one, or a named person above them. Knowing the route is not the same as using it, and the knowing is worth having on a bad Tuesday.

If any of this has become physical, or if there is a threat, that is not an employment question and it is not a pattern question. It is a safety one. Emergency services in the United States: 911.

If the behavior is aimed at you because of who you are rather than what you did, that is a different legal category with its own protections. In the United States the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is at eeoc.gov, 1-800-669-4000.

Nothing further down this page is a reason to stay in a job that is doing you harm, and this archive will never suggest that understanding somebody's threshold is a substitute for leaving.

What you are seeing, described plainly

A size that does not match the event, and a threshold that moves through the day and the quarter. That is all the archive can say about it, and it is deliberately little, because the rest would be a diagnosis of somebody who never opened a file here.

One observation is worth having, because it changes what you predict. What sets it off is usually not the mistake in front of it. It is a reading about being exposed, contradicted, or seen to be failing, which is why the same error produces nothing on Tuesday and everything on Thursday.

That does not make it acceptable, it does not make it yours, and it is not offered as an explanation you should extend to them. It is offered because it is the difference between a room you can predict and a room you cannot, and the unpredictable version costs more.

What is not in your control

Whether they look at it. Whether the organisation acts. Whether the people around you agree with your account, which they may privately and not publicly, and that is a specific and common loneliness worth naming.

Also not in your control: being good enough at the job to prevent it. That theory is almost universal in this position and it does not hold, because performance was never the input. People with immaculate records are shouted at on schedule.

You have been trying to solve a threshold with competence. It was never a competence problem, which is why the competence never worked.

What it is costing you, in the part you can measure

Continuous monitoring is a real load and it does not stay in the building. It shows up as a drop when a name appears on a screen, as Sunday evening arriving with a weight in it, and as a flatness that gets read as laziness and is actually conservation.

That is the point where this stops being about them and becomes a file you can open. Not because the room is your fault, and because the reading you are running in it is yours and it travels.

The test that settles it is portability. If the same monitoring, the same apologising ahead of trouble, and the same rehearsing of conversations turn up at the next job with a different manager, you brought something with you, and that something has a marker and a window in it.

    Should you leave?

This page will not decide that, and it will not pretend the decision is only about patterns. It is about money, notice, references, visas, a mortgage, and who else depends on the income, and all of those are facts rather than reasoning.

What is worth separating is the two questions people run together at two in the morning. Whether the job is doing you harm is one. Whether the reasoning telling you that you cannot go would have said the same thing at the last job is the other.

Only the second one is a pattern question, and answering it does not commit you to anything.

    THE FIRST-PERSON FILE

The shape described on this page is filed as The Rage Pattern. That file is written in the second person, for whoever is running it, about their own body. It is not a verdict about anybody else, and nobody can read it on someone else's behalf.

If this is you rather than them: Why do I get so angry over small things?

    Questions people ask about this

What should I do first about a boss who explodes?

Write it down. Date, time, who was present, what was said, in plain words with no interpretation. Keep it somewhere that is not their system, because people are routinely locked out of their own record on the day it matters.

Why does the same mistake produce nothing one day and everything the next?

Because the size is set by a threshold that moves rather than by the event, and the reading underneath it is usually about being exposed or contradicted rather than about the error itself.

Is it because I am bad at my job?

Performance was never the input, which is why getting better has not worked. People with immaculate records are shouted at on schedule. That theory is almost universal in this position and it does not hold.

    Should I report it?

That is yours to decide and this page will not decide it. What is worth doing regardless is finding out what your route is before you need it: human resources, a union representative, or a named person above them.

What if it has become physical or there is a threat?

Then it is not an employment question or a pattern question, it is a safety one. Emergency services in the United States are 911, and nothing on this page is a reason to stay in a room that is not safe.

What if it is aimed at who I am?

That is a different legal category with its own protections. In the United States the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is at eeoc.gov, 1-800-669-4000. That route exists independently of anything here.

Why am I so tired when the work is not hard?

Because you are running continuous monitoring alongside the actual job, and that load never gets counted by anybody including you. The flatness that follows is conservation rather than laziness.

Why do I brace before opening their messages?

Because a drop that arrives ahead of information is a body marker rather than a prediction. It is one of the clearest signals available here, and it is yours rather than theirs.

Is this a pattern in me or a bad workplace?

Both can be true and only one is portable. Ask whether the same monitoring and rehearsing turned up at the last job with a different manager. If it did, you brought something, and that something is workable.

    Should I leave?

This page will not decide it, and the decision is about money, notice, references and who depends on the income as much as anything else. Separate whether the job is doing you harm from whether the reasoning that says you cannot go said the same thing last time.

Is this a diagnosis of my manager?

No. The archive makes no clinical claims and diagnoses nobody, least of all somebody who never opened a file here. What little it says about them is offered so the room is predictable rather than so they are excused.

Why does nobody else say anything?

Often they agree privately and not publicly, which is a specific and common loneliness in this position. It is information about the organisation rather than about whether your account is accurate.

    THE ARCHIVES

The reading you run in that building is the file you can actually open, and it travels to the next one. The assessment names it in two minutes and costs nothing.
