What do I do about a perfectionist parent?
If mistakes at home bring fear, threats or hitting, read the box below first.
WRITTEN FOR THE PERSON STANDING NEXT TO IT
Your parent finds the one thing missing. You bring home a ninety-four, and the question is about the six.
This page is about your side of that. It will not tell you what your parent is. That would be a verdict about someone who never opened a file here.
What you are actually seeing
Some standards at home stop being standards. If mistakes bring hitting, threats or fear, act on that first.
If you are under eighteen and not safe at home tonight, that comes first.
In the United States:
Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline. Call or text 1-800-422-4453, staffed around the clock. It is used by parents ringing about themselves, and you can ring for advice without making an allegation.
988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.
Emergency services: 911.
Childhelp takes calls from young people about their own homes.
Nothing further down this page is a reason to stay somewhere you are not safe.
Praise comes with a correction attached. "Good, but." The good part is brief. The but is where the attention goes.
You clean the kitchen, and the counter gets wiped again. You tell them some news, and the first question is about what went wrong.
What you notice most is the checking. Your work is looked over before it counts. After enough years, you do the checking for them.
Why it was never about your work
A standard like this was usually in the house before you were. You met it before you could hold a pencil.
Children cannot see that. A child decides the fix is to do better. So you did better, and the bar moved with you.
That is the part worth knowing. The bar moved because your work never set it. No result of yours was the thing it measured.
What this feels like in the body
Many people describe the same thing. A tight stomach when they hand something over. A held breath while it is read.
[MECHANISM]
That tightness is the body signal, the first physical sign. It comes three to seven seconds before you act.
What follows is often a check. You read your own work through their eyes before anyone asks.
That second reader is the old standard, running in you. It can keep running long after you leave the house.
What this is not about
Wanting your parent's approval is not weakness. Every child wants it. The trouble is only that this approval kept moving.
It is also not something you can fix by getting it right. You have tried that. The reward was a new thing to fix.
And stepping back from their standard is not stepping back from them. You can love a parent and still stop auditioning.
What is actually in your control
A partner is an adult you chose. A parent's standard was set before you could argue with it. So the work here is about the voice it left in you.
You cannot change your parent's standard. You can stop handing work over for inspection. Share the result, and keep the draft.
You can stop auditioning. That means not explaining the flaw before they find it. Hand the thing over, and let it stand.
You can notice which voice is checking. When you reread a message five times, ask whose eyes are reading it.
If you still live at home, your room to move is smaller. Keeping some work private until it is done is still allowed.
If you are an adult, distance is also yours. Shorter visits and fewer updates are a decision, not a verdict.
If this is you rather than them
There is a file in this archive about the person who cannot call anything finished. It is written about the reader, not the parent.
Did your own rereading stay with you more than their red pen? Then that file may be yours.
THE FIRST-PERSON FILE
The shape described on this page is filed as The Perfectionism Trap. That file is written in the second person, for whoever is running it, about their own body. It is not a verdict about anybody else, and nobody can read it on someone else's behalf.
If this is you rather than them: Why can't I finish anything?Questions people ask about this
What do I do about a perfectionist parent?
Start with what reaches you. You cannot change their standard. You can stop handing work over for inspection, and notice when the checking voice is theirs.
Why is nothing I do ever good enough for my parent?
Because your work never set the bar. The standard was in the house before you were. That is why each result moved it rather than cleared it.
Is it my fault my mother is so hard on me?
No. A child decides the fix is to do better. It is the only thing a child can change. That conclusion was never true.
Why do I still check my work through my dad's eyes?
Because the standard was practised for years, and practice sticks. It can run in you long after you leave home. Noticing whose eyes are reading is the first step.
What is the body signal when I hand something over?
Often a tight stomach or a held breath while it is read. It comes three to seven seconds before you act. That gap is where a different action is still possible.
Should I stop showing my parent my work?
You can share the result and keep the draft. That is not hiding. It is choosing what goes up for inspection, and what does not.
How do I stop explaining the flaw before they find it?
Notice the urge first. Then hand the thing over and say nothing about its faults. The quiet may feel loud. Let it stand anyway.
Can I love my parent and still stop trying to impress them?
Yes. Stepping back from their standard is not stepping back from them. The two only feel the same because you learned them together.
What if the criticism at home has turned into fear?
Then it is not about standards, and this page is not the help. Childhelp takes calls and texts at 1-800-422-4453. In an emergency, call 911.
Can I change how my parent judges things?
Not directly. You can change what you hand over, and whose voice finishes the check. The standard itself belongs to your parent, and it always did.
