Why does my partner say nothing I do is good enough?
If the correction comes with fear, or a standard you can never meet no matter what you do, read the box below first.
WRITTEN FOR THE PERSON STANDING NEXT TO IT
They redid the dishes you just did. Or the laundry got refolded. Or the thank you came with a note about what was wrong. Every job you do comes back marked.
This page will not tell you what your partner is. Nobody here has met them. It will tell you what a bar that keeps moving may be doing, and what your own part is. Read the first box before the rest.
Before anything else
A high standard and a standard you can never meet are two different things, and the difference outranks the rest of this page.
Some standards have never once been met. Some corrections come with shouting, with money being withheld, or with fear of what happens when you get it wrong. That is not a page about a pattern. A bar set so you always fail is control.
In the United States:
The National Domestic Violence Hotline. Call 1-800-799-7233 or text START to 88788. Confidential, around the clock, and they talk about safety planning as well as leaving.
988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.
Emergency services: 911.
You can call those lines to talk through a standard that frightens you. You do not have to be certain, and you do not need anybody's permission.
If that box is not yours, keep going. What follows assumes the standard is heavy, not dangerous.
What you are actually seeing
Look at where the correction lands, not how often. It lands on finished things. The job is done, and the note arrives. The room is clean, and the one spot is pointed out.
It rarely lands on nothing. It lands on something real, and that is what makes it so hard to answer. The glass did have a mark. The towel was folded the other way. You cannot argue with the mark, so you end up arguing with the size of it.
And it does not stop when you get better. You learn the fold, and the note moves to the shelf. That movement is the thing to notice. The bar is not high. It travels.
What a bar that moves may be guarding
A thing that is finished can be judged. A thing still being fixed cannot. While the dish is being redone, nobody can say the kitchen was not good enough. The redo keeps the verdict away.
That is a job, and it can run in one person's body for years. Often it was learned in a house where a mistake cost something. This page cannot say what it costs your partner, and it will not guess.
What it can say is that the note is usually not about you. It arrives because something is finished, and finished is the part that cannot be borne. You happen to be the one who finished it.
You keep trying to reach the bar. The bar was never built to be reached.
What this is not about
It is not about the dishes. You know that, and it still helps to hear it said plainly.
It is not that you are careless. Check the record. You do more now than you did a year ago, with more attention, and the notes have not thinned. If care were the cure, it would have worked by now.
And it is not yours to fix. The note starts a few seconds before they say it, in a body you are not in. No fold reaches those seconds. Getting better at the job was never the way out, and that is not a failure of effort.
What happens in your body
Watch what happens in you when the glass gets picked back up. A drop in the stomach. Heat in the face. The sentence already forming: I did do it, I just did it my way.
[MECHANISM]
That drop is the body signal, the first thing you feel as your own pattern starts. It comes a few seconds before you speak.
What follows is your usual response. Defending the fold. Apologizing for a mark you did not see. Doing it their way next time, resentfully. Quietly stopping doing the job at all.
Each of those is a step in a sequence you can watch. Theirs runs in their body. This one runs in yours.
What is in your control
Name the redo, once, in daylight. Not during a redo. Something like: when you refold what I folded, I stop wanting to fold. Say it plainly and do not argue the towel.
Agree what done means before the job starts. Dishes in the rack. Laundry in the drawer. If done was reached, the job is done, and a note after that is a separate conversation.
Hand the job back when it gets redone. Not as a punishment. As a fact: if it needs to be done your way, it is yours. Say it once and mean it.
Leave the room instead of answering the note. The fourth defense of the same towel is not a defense. It is fuel.
And decide, while nothing is happening, what you can carry. How many notes a day. Which jobs you will still do. That is your number to set, and setting it is not a threat.
What it is costing you
Check what has changed in you. Whether you now do jobs their way before being asked. Whether you check your own work three times before it is seen. Whether you have stopped starting things at all, because unstarted things cannot be redone.
That last one is worth a long look. A standard that lands on you for long enough can become your own. The person who stops finishing because finished gets marked is running the same file from the other end.
Each of those has a body signal you can catch. The pre-check in particular: a tightening before you hand something over, a few seconds before the third look.
If this is you rather than them
Some people read this page for a partner and recognize the redo from the other side. The glass you cannot leave on the rack. The relief of fixing it and the small cost on someone's face.
If that just happened, the first-person file is written for you, about your own body, not anybody else's. It is the one standard in this house you can work on directly.
THE FIRST-PERSON FILE
The shape described on this page is filed as The Perfectionism Trap. That file is written in the second person, for whoever is running it, about their own body. It is not a verdict about anybody else, and nobody can read it on someone else's behalf.
If this is you rather than them: Why can't I finish anything?Questions people ask about this
Why does my partner say nothing I do is good enough?
This page cannot say what is inside them, and it will not guess. What can be seen from outside is a shape: a note that lands on finished things and a bar that moves when you reach it. That shape is often guarding against a verdict, not describing you.
Why is nothing I do ever good enough for my boyfriend?
Check where the note lands. If it lands on finished work and moves when you improve, the note is answering something that was finished, not something you did wrong. You did not install that and cannot meet it by trying harder.
What should I do when my partner redoes everything I do?
Name the redo once, in daylight. Agree what done means before the job starts. If it gets redone anyway, hand the job back as a fact, not a punishment.
Is a partner who criticizes everything being controlling?
Sometimes, and that is the first box on this page. A high standard is heavy. A standard you can never meet, backed by fear or money, is control. If no version has ever passed, talk to a person, not an article.
Should I just do things their way to keep the peace?
You can, once, if the job matters more than the fold. Doing every job their way forever teaches the bar that moving works. Agree on done instead, and let done be done.
Did I do something to make my partner this way?
No. A bar that moves was built long before your dishes. It is answering something older than you, and it would land on whoever finished the job.
Why do I feel so tired in this relationship?
Because you are on constant inspection. Pre-checking, redoing, defending, and never getting to the part where a job is simply done. That load never gets counted as work, which is why the tiredness seems to come from nowhere.
Should I tell my partner they are a perfectionist?
No. A word for who they are lands as a verdict, however gently it is said, and a verdict cannot be interrupted. Describe the redo instead. That is a fact they can hear.
Can a partner who is never satisfied change?
The mechanism is interruptible, and the interruption happens in one body, theirs. This page makes no forecast about anyone. What is in reach from where you stand is your own response.
What is the body signal when my partner corrects me?
Often a drop in the stomach or heat in the face, a few seconds before you defend the towel. That is where a different action can be chosen: leaving the room, or saying the one sentence you planned.
Why have I stopped starting things at home?
Because an unstarted thing cannot be redone. That is a pattern with a file of its own, and it is the one on this page that is yours to open.
THE ARCHIVES
You cannot open their file. You can open yours. The assessment names the pattern that has been running in you under the notes, and it costs nothing.
