Why does my boss pick on me?

Read this for yourself. Nothing here is for handing to the other person.

WRITTEN FOR THE PERSON STANDING NEXT TO IT

The same mistake from others means nothing. From you, it is a meeting. Or a comment in front of the team. Or a sigh the whole room hears.

Read this page for your side of that. It will not tell you what your boss is. That would be a verdict about someone who never opened a file here.

It starts with the part that protects you. Then it looks at why the aim may land on you, and the one part of this that is yours.

    The part that protects you

Write it down. The date, the time, who was there, what was said. Plain words, no reading of motive. Keep it somewhere that is not a work account or a work laptop.

Find out your route before you need it. That may be human resources, a union representative, or a named person above your boss. Knowing the route is not the same as using it.

If the picking on seems aimed at who you are rather than what you did, that is a legal question with its own protections. If there has been a threat, or anything physical, that is a safety question.

    Emergency services: 911.

Nothing further down this page is a reason to stay in a job that is doing you harm.

    What you are actually seeing

The criticism finds you first. Your work is checked twice. A small slip gets named in front of people. A good week gets no mention at all.

It is often quiet. A tone. A joke at your cost. A meeting you were left out of. Each piece alone sounds small when you try to explain it.

Added together, it is a pressure that never lets up. And it seems to land on you more than on anyone near you.

Why the aim may land on you

From the outside, it can look like heat that needs somewhere to land. Pressure from above comes down to a manager. It does not stay there. It goes to whoever is nearest and least able to send it back.

Sometimes that is the newest person. Sometimes the quietest. Sometimes the one whose work is good enough to feel like a threat. Why it is you in your building is not readable from your desk, and this page will not guess.

You have been trying to stop the aim with better work. The aim was never about the work.

    What this is not about

It is not about how good you are. People with clean records get picked on too. Being better at the job does not move a target that was never set by the job.

It is not caused by you. Being the one it lands on is not the same as earning it.

And it is not yours to fix. The sharp comment forms in a body you are not in, a few seconds after something tightens there. Nothing you do at your desk reaches those seconds.

    What happens in your body

Notice what happens in you when their name lights up your screen. A drop in the stomach. A hot face. Rehearsing an answer before you know the question.

    [MECHANISM]

That drop is a body signal, the first physical sign that your own pattern is starting. It comes a few seconds before you act.

What follows is your usual response. Over-explaining. Saying sorry for things you did not do. Working late to get ahead of the next comment.

Each one buys a quiet hour. Each one also tells the room that the fault was yours.

    What is in your control

Your record is yours. Keep writing it down, every time, in plain words.

Your answer is yours. When a comment lands, say less. One flat sentence: "I hear you. I will look at it." No speech, no long defense. Then get on with the work.

Your witnesses are yours. If it happens in front of people, note who was there. You do not have to ask them anything yet.

And one thing is not yours: whether your boss looks at it. That is their work, and no amount of extra effort from you will do it for them.

    What it is costing you

Check what has changed. Whether Sunday evening has a weight in it. Whether you check your work three times before it goes out. Whether you say sorry at home for things nobody raised.

That watching does not stay in the building. If it follows you to the next job, with a different boss, it is something you carry. That part is yours to work on.

Why does my boss pick on me?

From the outside, it can look like pressure that needs somewhere to land. It goes to whoever is nearest and least able to send it back. That says something about where you stand, not about what you are worth. Why it is you is not readable from your desk. What you can do is write it down, say less in the moment, and know your route.

Why does my boss only pick on me?

Being the only one is the part that hurts most, and it is also the part worth writing down. If you are singled out, note who else made the same mistake and what happened to them. That record matters. If the reason seems to be who you are, such as your age, race or sex, that is a legal question, and the box above names who handles it.

Why do managers always pick on me?

If it has happened with more than one manager, look at what stays the same. Not to blame yourself. To find the part you carry. You may answer every comment with a long defense, or go quiet and work late. Those responses can make you an easy place for pressure to land. That is a pattern of your own, and it can be caught.

Why is my boss always mean to me?

When it seems to come for no reason, it often has a reason that is not you. A bad week above them. A fear of looking weak. A threshold that drops by the hour. None of that makes it fair, and none of it is yours to fix. Write down what was said, plainly, and keep your answer to one sentence.

What do I do if my boss is rude to me?

In the moment, say less. One flat sentence, no heat in it: "I would like to talk about this when we are both calm." Then leave it. Later, write down what was said, with the date and who was there. If it keeps happening, take your record to your route: human resources, a union, or a named person above them.

Is it ok for my boss to disrespect me?

Feedback on your work is part of a job. Contempt for you as a person is not. You get to decide what you will accept, and you are allowed to decide no. Say it once, plainly, on a calm day. Keep your record either way. Whether you stay is a question about money and options, and only you can weigh those.

Why does my boss keep putting me down?

A put-down can make the person saying it feel bigger for a moment. That moment may be what they are after, and it has little to do with your work. Watch what happens in your body when it lands. The drop in the stomach is your signal. In the next few seconds, choose one flat sentence instead of a long defense.

If this is you rather than them

Some people read this page for a boss and recognize the heat from the inside. There is a file on The Rage Pattern, where a small thing crosses a threshold and a response far bigger than the event comes back.

Did you snap at someone below you this week and not know why? Then that file may be yours. It is written about the reader, not anyone else.

    THE FIRST-PERSON FILE

The shape described on this page is filed as The Rage Pattern. That file is written in the second person, for whoever is running it, about their own body. It is not a verdict about anybody else, and nobody can read it on someone else's behalf.

If this is you rather than them: Why do I get so angry over small things?

    Questions people ask about this

Why does my boss pick on me?

From the outside, it can look like pressure that needs somewhere to land, and it goes to whoever is nearest and least able to send it back. That is about where you stand, not what you are worth.

Why does my boss only pick on me?

This page cannot say why it is you. Write down who else made the same mistake and what happened to them. If the reason seems to be who you are, that is a legal question with its own protections.

Is it my fault my boss picks on me?

Being the one it lands on is not the same as earning it. People with clean records get picked on too, because the target was never set by the work.

    What should I write down?

The date, the time, who was there and what was said. Plain words, no reading of motive. Keep it somewhere that is not a work account.

What do I say when my boss criticizes me in front of others?

One flat sentence: "I hear you. I will look at it." No defense in front of the room. Note who was there, and write it down afterward.

Is it ok for my boss to disrespect me?

Feedback on your work is part of a job. Contempt for you as a person is not. You get to decide what you will accept, and you are allowed to decide no.

Will working harder make my boss stop?

Better work does not move a target that was never set by the work. Extra effort tends to buy a quiet hour and then the next comment.

Why do I feel sick when my boss messages me?

That drop in the stomach is a body signal, the first sign your own pattern is starting. It comes a few seconds before you act. Noticing it is the first move that is yours.

Should I quit because my boss picks on me?

This page will not decide that. It is about money, notice, references and who depends on your income. What it can say is that nothing here is a reason to stay somewhere that is doing you harm.

Why do I keep getting picked on at every job?

Look at what stays the same from job to job. You may answer every comment with a long defense, or go quiet and work late. That response is a pattern of your own, and it can be caught.

Who can I talk to about being singled out at work?

Your route at work: human resources, a union representative, or a named person above your boss. If it is aimed at who you are, the box near the top names who handles that.

You cannot open their file. You can open yours. The assessment names the pattern that has been running in you while you braced for the next comment, and it costs nothing.
