Is my boss testing me?
Read this for yourself. Nothing here is for handing to the other person.
WRITTEN FOR THE PERSON STANDING NEXT TO IT
The task lands with no instructions again. Or the deadline moves for no reason. Or a question in the meeting is one you have already answered twice.
You have started to wonder if it is on purpose. Read this page as your side of it. It will not tell you what your boss is, because they never opened a file here.
What you are actually seeing
Write down the events, not the feeling. The same question asked three ways. Work handed over with half the facts. Praise in one meeting and silence in the next. A small mistake raised in front of the team.
Then look at the timing. Does it come when you are new, or when you have just done well? A test that lands after a win is checking something different from one that lands after a slip.
What the checking may be doing
Some testing at work is ordinary. A new manager checks how you think under pressure. That needs no file and no mechanism.
There is a narrower shape. In this archive, a file called The Testing Pattern describes a person who keeps checking whether someone will stay loyal, because no single answer settles it. At work, you might see it as a boss who checks whether you still need them, or whether you will go around them.
That is a shape, not a label for your boss, and this page will not call it one. You cannot see inside another person from your desk. Neither can a page.
The test is not about the work. It is about whether you are still on their side.
What this is not about
It is not a verdict on your ability. A test that keeps moving cannot be passed by being better at the job.
It is not yours to fix. You did not cause whatever runs in another person, and longer hours do not close it. Each extra effort is one more answer to a question that keeps being asked again.
What happens in your body
Notice what happens in you when the next odd request arrives. Heat in the face. A tight jaw. A pull to over-explain, or to stay late so nothing can be faulted.
[MECHANISM]
That heat is the body signal, the first physical sign that your own pattern is starting. It comes before you decide anything.
After it comes the window, the few seconds between the signal and your usual response. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measured constant.
Then the usual response. A long defensive email. Agreeing to a deadline you know is wrong. Copying three people so nobody can say you did not ask.
Each one eases the day. None of them ends the testing.
What is in your control
Ask for the facts you need in writing. "To get this right, can you confirm the deadline and the format?" A clear request takes the guessing out of the test.
Answer a question once, plainly. If it comes back in a new shape, point to your first answer and stop there.
Keep a short private record: the date, the request, what you did. It is for your own clarity, not a case against anybody.
If the testing turns into being singled out for who you are, such as your age, race, sex or a disability, that is not a pattern question. It is a workplace rights question, and it belongs with HR or an employment lawyer.
And one thing is not in your control: what runs in your boss. No page can tell you when, or whether, it stops.
What it is costing you
Check what has changed in you. Whether you now draft every email twice. Whether you stay late to head off questions nobody has asked yet. Whether you have stopped saying what you think in meetings.
Each of those has a body signal you can catch. That part is yours, and it comes home with you at night.
Is my boss testing me?
Possibly, and you cannot know for certain from your desk. Look at the shape rather than the motive. Does the checking end when you pass, or does the test just move? A test with a finish is ordinary management. A test that resets every week is checking something your work cannot answer. Answer once, ask for facts in writing, and keep your own record.
Is my boss insecure?
This page will not say. A word like that is a verdict about someone who is not here to answer. What you can see is behavior: credit kept close, questions asked in front of others, unease when you talk to their manager. That tells you how the room works. It does not tell you what is inside your boss, and you do not need to know that to act.
What are the signs of an insecure boss?
This page does not hand out a list for grading a person. A list like that turns every odd day into evidence against them. A record of events helps more: what was asked, when, and what came after. If the same check keeps arriving after your wins, that is the shape this page describes. Use the record to decide what you do, not to decide what they are.
If this is you rather than them
Some people read this page about a boss and recognize the checking from the other side. You hand someone a task with half the facts, to see what they do with it. You watch who goes around you.
If that is you, there is a file in this archive written about you, not about anyone you manage. It is the one part of this you can work on directly.
THE FIRST-PERSON FILE
The shape described on this page is filed as The Testing Pattern. That file is written in the second person, for whoever is running it, about their own body. It is not a verdict about anybody else, and nobody can read it on someone else's behalf.
If this is you rather than them: Why do I test people who love me?Questions people ask about this
Is my boss testing me?
You cannot know the motive from your desk. Look at whether the checking ends when you pass. A test with a finish is ordinary. A test that keeps moving is checking something your work cannot answer.
Why is my boss always testing me?
This page cannot say what runs in your boss. Notice the timing. If the checks land after your wins rather than your slips, they are about loyalty or standing, not about the work.
Is my boss insecure?
This page will not put a word like that on a person who is not here. You can see behavior and timing. That is enough to decide what you do next.
What are the signs of an insecure boss?
A list of signs turns into a verdict kit. Keep a record of events instead: the request, the date, what came after. The record shows you the shape without labeling anyone.
Why does my boss test me after I do well?
A win can read as distance to a person who checks. The test may be asking whether you still need them. That question is not one your work can answer.
How do I respond when my boss tests me?
Ask for the facts in writing, answer once, and point back to your first answer if the question returns. Keep a private record for your own clarity.
Should I work harder to pass my boss's test?
A test that keeps moving cannot be passed by effort. More hours feed it. Steady, clear work and one plain answer per question is the better use of you.
Is it my fault my boss does not trust me?
That is a verdict, and this method does not give them. You did not cause what runs in another person. Your response to the checking is the part you can change.
What is the body signal when my boss tests me?
Often heat in the face or a tight jaw as the request arrives. It comes a few seconds before your usual response, which is where you can choose a different action.
When is it more than my boss testing me?
When you are singled out for who you are, such as your age, race, sex or a disability. That is a workplace rights question for HR or an employment lawyer.
How do I stop overthinking every request from my boss?
Notice the body signal first. Then ask one clarifying question in writing and do the work as asked. The overthinking is your own sequence, and it is the part you can reach.
THE ARCHIVES
You cannot open your boss's file. You can open yours. The assessment names the pattern running in you at work, and it costs nothing.
