Why did my mom test me?
If a parent tested your body, your safety, or your food, read the box below first.
WRITTEN FOR THE PERSON STANDING NEXT TO IT
She set it up and watched you. Maybe she said she was leaving, to see if you would beg. Maybe she went cold for days to see who would crack first. Maybe she asked a question with only one safe answer.
Read this page as your side of it. It will not tell you what your mother is, because she never opened a file here.
It is about a test of love or loyalty. Check the box below first, because one other kind of test is not on this page at all.
Before anything else
This goes first. Some tests are not about love at all.
If a parent checks your body without your agreement, punishes you with hunger or fear, or tests whether you will keep a secret about someone hurting you, that is not a pattern question.
If you are under 18 and any of that is happening, act on it today.
In the United States:
Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline. Call or text 1-800-422-4453, staffed around the clock. It is used by parents ringing about themselves, and you can ring for advice without making an allegation.
988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.
Crisis Text Line. Text HOME to 741741, if a call is the part you cannot do.
Emergency services: 911.
Childhelp takes calls and texts from children and teens, not only from parents.
You can call the Lifeline about yourself or about somebody else.
If none of that is true, looking still cost nothing. What follows assumes you have looked.
What you are actually seeing
Write down what the test was, in plain words. A threat to leave. A long silence. A choice between her and someone else. A story told to see if you would repeat it.
Then look at when it came. After a fight? Or after a good stretch, when you had started to relax? A test that lands on the calm days is checking something the calm itself set off.
What the test may have been checking
In this archive, a file called The Testing Pattern describes a person who keeps checking whether someone close will stay. One good answer never settles it, so the check comes back.
From your side, that can feel like a game with rules you were never told. Pass, and there is relief for a day. Then a new test arrives in a different shape.
That is one possible shape, not a label for your mother, and this page will not call it one. You cannot see inside a parent. Neither can a page.
You did pass. The test was built so that passing never counts.
What this is not about
It is not a sign you failed her. A check that cannot pass is not a measure of your love.
It is not yours to fix. You did not cause what runs in a parent, and no child can be good enough to end it. The question was never one your answer could close.
What happens in your body
Notice what happens in you when the next test starts. A drop in the stomach. A fast heart. A pull to say whatever ends it.
[MECHANISM]
That drop is the body signal, the first physical sign that your own pattern is starting. It comes before you decide anything.
After it comes the window, the few seconds between the signal and your usual response. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measured constant.
Then the usual response. Pleading. Picking her side against someone you love. Saying sorry for something you did not do.
Each one ends the test for now. None of them ends the testing.
What is in your control
Answer once, honestly, and stop. You do not have to keep answering the same question in new shapes.
Name the test to yourself, quietly, while it happens. "This is a test. I do not have to pass it." That sentence is for you, not for her.
Keep one adult you trust in the picture. A relative, a teacher, a friend's parent. A child should not hold this alone.
And one thing is not in your control: what runs in her. No page can say whether, or when, it changes.
What it is costing you
Check what has changed in you. Whether you now watch her face before you speak. Whether you test people yourself, to see if they stay. Whether calm days feel like the moment before something goes wrong.
Each of those has a body signal you can catch. That part is yours.
Why did my mom test me?
This page cannot say what was in her, and it will not guess. What it can say is what a test of love tends to check: will you stay, will you choose me, do you still need me. If one good answer settled it, that was a question. If the test came back in a new shape, it was a check no answer could pass. That is not on you.
If this is you rather than them
Some people read this page and recognize the testing from the inside. You go quiet to see who reaches first. You ask a question with one safe answer.
If that is you, there is a file in this archive written about your own body. It is the one part of this you can work on directly.
THE FIRST-PERSON FILE
The shape described on this page is filed as The Testing Pattern. That file is written in the second person, for whoever is running it, about their own body. It is not a verdict about anybody else, and nobody can read it on someone else's behalf.
If this is you rather than them: Why do I test people who love me?Questions people ask about this
Why did my mom test me?
This page cannot say what was in her. A test of love tends to check whether you will stay or choose her. If one answer never settled it, the test was not one you could pass.
Why does my mom test my loyalty?
One possible shape is a person who keeps checking whether someone close will stay. This page will not name it in her. Your loyalty is not what failed.
Why does my mom threaten to leave?
This page cannot say why. A threat like that can work as a test of whether you will beg. If it frightens you or happens often, tell another adult you trust.
Why does my mom go silent to see what I do?
A long silence can be a check: who reaches first. You do not have to win it. One calm message is enough, and then you can let it rest.
Did I fail my mom's test?
No. A check built so that no answer counts cannot be failed or passed. It is not a measure of your love.
How do I respond when my mom tests me?
Answer once, honestly, then stop. Name it to yourself as a test. Keep one trusted adult in the picture so you are not holding it alone.
Is it my fault my mom tests me?
That is a verdict, and this method does not give them. You did not cause what runs in a parent. Your own response is the part you can change.
What is the body signal when my mom tests me?
Often a drop in the stomach or a fast heart, with a pull to say whatever ends it. It comes a few seconds before your usual response, which is where a different action fits.
Why do I test people now too?
A sequence you lived inside can become one you run. If you go quiet to see who reaches first, there is a file in this archive written about your own body.
What if the test involved my body or my safety?
Then it is not a pattern question. Act today. In the United States, Childhelp takes calls and texts from children and teens, and the numbers are at the top of this page.
