Why is my friend always in a crisis?
If your friend talks about ending their life, or you are afraid for them tonight rather than for their week, read the box below first.
WRITTEN FOR THE PERSON STANDING NEXT TO IT
Every call from them is an emergency. The job, the ex, the landlord, the text that was read and not answered. Each one arrives at full volume, and each one needs you now.
This page is about your side of that. It will not tell you what your friend is. That would be a verdict about someone who never opened a file here.
Read the first section before anything else. Some of what gets called a crisis is a real one, and a real one does not belong to you.
Before anything else
This goes first. Some crises are the kind this page is about: the same three subjects, at the same volume, every week. Some are not.
If your friend talks about hurting themselves, or about not wanting to be alive, that is not a pattern to read from the hall. It is a call to make today, and you can make it about somebody else.
In the United States:
988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.
Crisis Text Line. Text HOME to 741741, if a call is the part you cannot do.
Emergency services: 911.
You can call the Lifeline about your friend, and you can give your friend that number. Neither of those is leaving them alone. Both are the opposite.
If the fear in your chest right now is for their life rather than their week, close this page and use one of those lines. Everything below assumes you have.
If none of that is what tonight is, what follows is for you.
What you are actually seeing
Not a problem looking for a solution. If it were, the call would end when a plan appeared. Suggest one and watch: it gets a reason it will not work.
Each emergency is real to them in the moment. It is also the same size as the last one. A missed text and a lost job arrive at the same pitch.
And you are the one who gets the call. Not because you are closest. Because you answer, you fix, and last time it worked.
Why it keeps landing on you
Two things keep it running, and only one of them is yours.
The first is on their side. Why every week brings a fire, and why it needs you, is not something this page can see.
The second is yours, and it is the fear. You are scared of what happens if you do not pick up. So you pick up. The relief when the fire is out is real, and it is yours as much as theirs.
That is the loop. The fear makes the rescue. The rescue brings relief. The relief is why the phone gets answered faster next time, and why the reasoning always ends in the same place: I cannot leave her alone with this.
You are not the only person they could call. You are the one who always answers.
What this is not about
It is not about whether you care. You do.
It is not about whether their problems are real. Some are. Being real and being yours to carry are different questions.
And it is not yours to fix. You cannot make a week calm for somebody else. You can only decide what you do when the call comes.
What happens in your body
Watch what happens when their name lights up at eleven at night. If the message is about their life, go back to the top. If it is about their week, keep reading.
[MECHANISM]
That jolt, the fast heart and the tight chest, is the body signal, the first physical sign that your own pattern is starting. You feel it a few seconds before you answer.
Those seconds are the window: the short gap between the signal and the behavior. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measured rule.
What usually follows is the rescue. You pick up. You stay on for an hour. You cancel your morning.
Then relief, because they are calmer. That relief is yours, and it is what makes the next rescue faster.
Three moves, and they are yours
This method names three moves. They are for your pattern, not your friend's. You cannot run them for anybody else.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
Catch: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. For you, that may be the jolt as their name lights up.
Intercept: interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. Do not pick up in the first minute. Read the message twice. Decide whether this is the top section or this one. Then choose.
Rewrite: repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. Every late call is another chance to practice.
One sentence you can use when it is their week and not their life: "I can hear this is a hard night. I can talk for ten minutes, and then I need to go." Then go at ten minutes.
What is in your control
You decide when you answer, how long you stay, and what you do. That is the whole of it.
You can hand over the line before the night it is needed. On a calm afternoon, give them the number at the top of this page. Say: if you are ever scared for yourself, call that. I will still be here.
You can set the length before the call. Ten minutes, and say so at the start. A limit named at minute fifty is a fight.
You can stop fixing. Listen, say that sounds hard, and do not produce a plan. A plan is what gets argued with. It is also what keeps you on the phone.
You can see them when nothing is on fire. A coffee on an ordinary Tuesday. That is how the friendship gets to be made of something other than emergencies.
And one thing is not in your control: whether the crises stop. No page can tell you that, and anybody who does is guessing.
What it is costing you
Count it. The mornings you cancelled. The way your own hard week never came up. The jolt you now feel at a name that used to mean fun.
There is often something else underneath. When every call is a fire, the question of what you get from this stops being asked. The reasoning always ends in the same place: she needs me.
That reasoning has a file here. It is written about the person who cannot put a bond down, not about the person at the other end of it.
If this is you rather than them
There is a file in this archive about the person who stays in something that drains them and keeps finding reasons to. It is written about the reader, not the friend.
If you read this page and recognized the fear that picks up the phone, that file may be yours. It is the one pattern on this call you can work on directly.
THE FIRST-PERSON FILE
The shape described on this page is filed as The Draining Bond. That file is written in the second person, for whoever is running it, about their own body. It is not a verdict about anybody else, and nobody can read it on someone else's behalf.

Why is my friend always in a crisis?
This page cannot say, and it will not guess at their side. What it can see is yours: the fear that picks up the phone, and the relief when the fire is out. That half is the one you can change.
How do I deal with a friend who is always in crisis mode?
Decide the length before the call and say it at the start. Listen without producing a plan. See them when nothing is on fire. And read the first section of this page first.
I am scared of leaving my friend alone. What do I do?
Separate the two fears. If you are scared for their life, use the lines at the top of this page today. If you are scared for their week, a ten minute call is not leaving them alone.
What if my friend's crisis is real?
Some are. Being real and being yours to carry are different questions. A real emergency about their life belongs to a line staffed for it. A real hard week can be held in ten minutes and a coffee on Tuesday.
How do I stop being the friend everyone calls to fix things?
Stop fixing. Listen, say that sounds hard, and do not produce a plan. A plan is what gets argued with, and it is what keeps you on the phone. The calls change shape when the fixing stops.
What is the body signal when my friend calls in a crisis?
Often a jolt, a fast heart, or a tight chest as their name lights up. It comes a few seconds before you answer. Those seconds are where a different action can go.
How do I end a call with a friend in crisis without feeling cruel?
Name the length at the start, not the end. "I have ten minutes." Then go at ten. A limit named early is a plan the two of you share. One named at minute fifty is a fight.
Should I stop answering my friend's calls?
That is yours to decide, and this page will not decide it for you. What it suggests is smaller: do not answer in the first minute, read the message twice, and decide which section of this page tonight belongs to.
What if my friend says they cannot go on?
Then this is the top of the page and nothing else. Ask them plainly whether they mean their life. If yes, use the lines in the first section today, and you can make the call about them yourself.
Is my friend using me?
That is a verdict about someone who never opened a file here, and this method does not give them. What can be seen from outside is a shape: a fire every week, and one person who always answers.
THE ARCHIVES
You cannot open their file. You can open yours, and it is the one that picks up the phone. The assessment names it and costs nothing.
