REFERENCE: ONE TERM
Energy vampire is a popular word for a person who seems to leave you drained every time you spend time with them.
You hang up and feel emptied out. Their name on the screen is enough to make something in you sink. Energy vampire is the word many people reach for, and it puts the cause in the other person.
This page will not rule on anyone. It takes the tiredness seriously, then looks at the part on your side of the call. That part is smaller than the word, and it is the part you can catch.
What it looks like
A friend calls, and an hour later you have heard every detail of their week. You have not said a word about yours. Nobody asked, and you did not offer.
The crisis changes, but the shape does not. One person brings the problem and the other brings the listening. One person calls late, and the other picks up.
Afterward you are flat. Not angry, just used up. The evening you had planned is gone, and you cannot quite say where it went.
You see the name on the screen, and you are already tired.
What the word gets right
The exhaustion is real. Nobody reaches for a word like this unless the tiredness has gone on a long time and has a shape.
It is right about the flow, too. The traffic runs one way. Something is being taken: time, evenings, attention you did not have spare. None of that is in dispute here.
Where the word stops
At the other person. The word describes them, and a description of them leaves you only three moves: leave, avoid, or brace. Most people have tried all three and still answered the next call.
That is the clue. If the drain lived only in the other person, distance would fix it. The same tiredness often shows up with a sibling, a coworker, a partner, a different friend. A word for one person cannot explain a thing that follows you across five. A sequence can.
The word is not a diagnosis or a type of person, either. It is a feeling, turned into a name for someone else.
What is running on your side
A request begins. Before it has finished, you have said yes, or settled in for the next hour. The reasons come after: they need me, it would be unkind not to. They sound sensible every time.
Just before the yes, your body moves. A drop in the stomach, a heavy chest, a tight jaw. That is the body signal, the feeling that tells you the pattern is starting.
In this archive the pattern is The Draining Bond. It is the pattern where you keep giving to a bond that keeps taking, and you cannot step back even when you want to.
What to do when you notice it
Pick the next call or message from the person who drains you most.
Before you answer, feel the body signal: the drop, the heavy chest, the tight jaw. Name what is starting: this is the yes that leaves before they ask.
Say one short sentence out loud. I have twenty minutes tonight. Or: I can't talk now, I will call tomorrow.
Then take the different action instead of the usual response. End the call when you said you would. Mention one thing about your own week. Let a late message wait until morning.
Count it as one rep, one repetition of the new action. It counts if it felt awkward. It counts if you stayed on longer than you meant to. You are not trying to change them. You are taking back a few seconds before your yes.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
Stomach drops. That is the yes starting. Twenty minutes, then I go.
Name on the screen. Heavy chest. I will answer in the morning.

Often mixed up with
A DRAINING FRIENDSHIP
A draining friendship describes the bond between two people. Energy vampire puts all of it inside one person.
A BAD FRIEND
This page passes no verdict on character. The word names how you feel after, and that feeling is the part you can work with.
BEING TIRED
Ordinary tiredness lifts with rest. This tiredness comes back with the same name on the screen.
Questions people ask about this term
What is an energy vampire?
It is a popular word for a person who seems to leave you drained every time. It puts the cause of the tiredness in them.
How do I know if someone is an energy vampire?
This page will not rule on anyone. A better question is what happens in your body in the seconds before you say yes to them.
Is energy vampire a real psychological term?
No. It is everyday language, not a diagnosis or a type of person. The tiredness behind it is real.
Why do some people leave me so drained?
Often because the flow runs one way. They bring the problem, you bring the listening, and your yes leaves before you have chosen it.
Why do I keep answering when I know I will feel drained?
Because the yes fires before the thought does. A drop in the stomach arrives, and you are on the call before you have decided anything.
Should I end the friendship?
This page does not make that call for you. Whatever you decide, watch whether the same quick yes shows up with others. That part is yours to catch.
Can a partner or a parent be an energy vampire?
People use the word that way. The test is the same. Notice what your body does in the seconds before you give.
Why do I feel guilty when I don't pick up?
Because not answering lands in your body as if you had done something wrong. The guilt arrives fast. It is not proof that you did.
What if I am the one who drains people?
Asking that is a fair start. Notice whether you ask about the other person's week, and whether you stop when they sound tired.
What is the difference between this and a friend in a hard time?
A hard time has an end, and the flow turns around after it. When the shape stays the same for years, the question is worth asking.
What can I do the next time they call?
Feel the drop, say one short sentence out loud, and name how long you have. End the call when you said you would. Count it.
