Why does my boss avoid me?
If the avoidance began after you raised a concern or reported something, read the box in the first section before anything else.
WRITTEN FOR THE PERSON STANDING NEXT TO IT
Your boss has stopped looking at you. Meetings get moved. Messages get a one-word reply, or none. In the hall they find a reason to turn. Read the box in the first section before anything else, because one kind of avoidance is not a pattern question.
This page will not tell you what your boss is. That would be a verdict about someone who never opened a file here. It is about the shape of the avoidance, and the part of your week you can actually reach.
What you are actually seeing
One thing outranks the rest of this file. If the avoidance began after you raised a concern, reported something, declined something, or told them about a pregnancy, a leave or a health need, that is not a pattern. It may be retaliation, and retaliation has a legal name and a legal route.
In the United States:

988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.
Emergency services: 911.
Write down the dates now, while they are fresh, whatever you decide to do with them. Nothing further down this page is a reason to stay in a job that is doing you harm.
If that is not it, look at the timing rather than the tone. Check what came right before the avoidance started. Often it is not a mistake. It is the review that went well, the project you were thanked for in front of others, the frank conversation where they told you something real.
It rarely looks like a decision. Slower replies. A one-on-one that keeps moving. Eye contact that lands on the person beside you. From outside it is almost impossible to point at, which is why raising it makes you feel unreasonable.
Why it may follow the good stretch
There is a file in this archive called The Disappearing Pattern. It names a withdrawal that repeats and leaves wanted contact unexplained. It is written for the person running it, about their own body. Nobody here has met your boss.
In that file, the pull back is not a plan. Being seen closely is one starting point. Being needed is another. The body of the person running it treats closeness as exposure, and it moves to reduce the exposure before anyone can use it. A good review can be closeness. So can a thank-you.
Or it is none of that. A boss who avoids the whole team is showing you a workload, not a pattern. A boss who avoids you alone, after you did well, is showing you a timing. Only the timing is readable from your chair.
The distance is not a grade. It arrived after the grade was good.
What this is not about
It is not that your work slipped. Check the record before you believe that: the last three things you handed in, and what was said about them.
It is not a test you can pass by working harder. More hours, longer emails and a flawless presentation do not reach the seconds before they turn in the hall. Nothing does, from where you sit.
And it is not yours to fix. You cannot run another person's sequence, and a boss is still another person.
What happens in your body
Notice what happens in you when the meeting moves again. A drop in the stomach. Heat in the face. A pull to send a long message explaining things nobody asked about.
[MECHANISM]
That drop is your body signal, the first physical sign your own pattern has started. It comes a few seconds before you act.
What follows is your usual response. The three-paragraph email. The apology for taking their time. Staying late so the work can speak when you cannot.
Each one asks the avoidance for a verdict. It does not give one, and the asking costs you.
What is in your control
This method names three moves. They are for your pattern, not your boss's. Nobody can run them for another person.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
Catch: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. For you, that may be the drop in the stomach as the meeting moves again.
Intercept: interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. Do not send the long message. Ask one specific question with a date in it. Then stop.
Rewrite: repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. Every moved meeting is one more chance to practice it.
One line you can use, in writing: "I need a decision on the budget by Thursday. A yes or a no is enough." A specific ask is harder to avoid than a conversation, and it leaves a record.
Keep that record. Date, ask, answer or no answer. It is not a case against them. It is the thing that stops you rereading the hall for meaning.
And stop filling the silence with extra work. Work handed over to earn a look back is work you will resent, and it will not earn one.
What it is costing you
Check what has changed in you since it started. Whether you rewrite one-line messages four times. Whether you explain ordinary choices nobody questioned. Whether you have gone quieter in meetings, because less said gets less turned away from.
Every one of those is a pattern with a name and a file. The over-explaining and the early apology have a body signal you can learn to feel, a drop in the stomach a few seconds before the sentence leaves.
Why does my boss avoid me?
This page cannot say why your boss does it. It can tell you what to look at. First the box at the top: if it began after you raised something, that outranks everything here. Then the timing: after a mistake, after a good stretch, or all the time with the whole team. Only the second shape is the one this file describes.
What it means is less than it feels like. A withdrawal that follows a good review is a statement about the person withdrawing. It is not a statement about the review.
Why does my supervisor not talk to me?
Sort it before you read it. A supervisor who talks to nobody has a week problem. One who stopped talking to you after you raised a concern has handed you a legal question, and the box above is for that. One who stopped after thanking you, or after a conversation that got real, may be showing you the shape in this file.
In every case the same move is yours. One specific ask, in writing, with a date. A question that can be answered in three words gets answered more often than an invitation to talk.
If this is you rather than them
Some people read this page about a boss and recognize the urge to turn in the hall from the inside, with their own team. If that just happened, the first-person file is written for you, about your own body, rather than about anyone else's.
It is the one sequence on this page you can work on directly.
THE FIRST-PERSON FILE
The shape described on this page is filed as The Disappearing Pattern. That file is written in the second person, for whoever is running it, about their own body. It is not a verdict about anybody else, and nobody can read it on someone else's behalf.
If this is you rather than them: Why do I push people away when they get close?Questions people ask about this
Why does my boss ignore me after a good review?
This page cannot read your boss. What it can say is that a withdrawal which follows a good stretch is a timing, not a grade. For some people, being close to a person who did well is exposure, and the body moves to reduce it.
Why does my boss avoid me but talk to everyone else?
That is the shape worth checking rather than guessing at. Look at what came right before it started. If it was a complaint, a leave or a declined request, read the box at the top. If it was praise or a frank conversation, that is the shape this file describes.
Did I do something wrong?
Check the record before you believe that: the last three things you handed in and what was said about them. If the record is good and the avoidance followed it, the avoidance is not about the work.
Should I ask my boss directly why they are avoiding me?
Ask for something specific instead. Why questions invite a conversation, and a conversation is the thing being avoided. A decision with a date in it is harder to turn away from, and it leaves a record either way.
What do I say to a boss who avoids me?
Something like, in writing: I need a decision on this by Thursday, and a yes or a no is enough. One ask, one date. Then stop, and do not follow it with three paragraphs.
Why does my manager keep cancelling our one-on-ones?
This page cannot say. A meeting that keeps moving is one of the ways the withdrawal looks from outside, because nothing was ever refused. Keep the dates. Ask for the one thing you needed from the meeting in writing instead.
Is my boss avoiding me because they want me to quit?
This page cannot read an intention, and it will not guess at one. If that fear is live for you, write down the dates and the asks starting today. A record answers that question better than the hall does, and you can take it wherever you go.
What if the avoidance started after I made a complaint?
Then this is not a pattern question, and the box at the top of this page is for it. Write down the dates now. In the United States the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is at eeoc.gov, 1-800-669-4000.
Why do I keep over-explaining to a boss who does not reply?
Because a long message lowers the dread for a minute, and it works, which is why it keeps running. It has a body signal, usually a drop in the stomach a few seconds before you start typing, and it is the pattern on this page you can interrupt.
Should I go to HR about a boss who avoids me?
That is a decision about your job and this page cannot make it. What it can say is to write the record first: dates, asks, answers. Take the record with you wherever you decide to go.
Why does my boss go quiet after I do well?
Because for some bodies, closeness to a person who did well reads as exposure rather than safety. The quiet is the body reducing the exposure. It is a statement about the person going quiet, not about what you did.
What is the body signal when my boss turns away in the hall?
Often a drop in the stomach, heat in the face, or a pull to explain something nobody asked about. It comes a few seconds before you act. Those seconds are where you can choose a different action.
