Why is my sister draining me?

Read this for yourself. Nothing here is for handing to the other person.

WRITTEN FOR THE PERSON STANDING NEXT TO IT

You love her and you dread her. Both are true. She calls and you watch the phone ring for a moment first. After a visit you need a quiet evening to come back to yourself.

Before you read on, notice one thing. Is it every contact with her, or a certain kind? A long call, a visit at her place, a family dinner. Write down which one costs the most.

This page is about your side of that. It will not tell you what your sister is. That would be a verdict about someone who never opened a file here.

    What you are actually seeing

The talk runs one way. Her week, her news, her problem with her partner or her boss. You listen well, and that is the trouble. Nobody asks about yours.

Or it is not the talk. It is the weather in the room. Her mood sets the tone, and you spend the visit reading it and adjusting.

Either way, you leave tired in a way that sleep does not fix. And then you feel guilty for being tired, because she is your sister.

    Why it lands on you

Two things keep it running. One is hers, and this page cannot see it. What she needs, and why she reaches for you to get it, is not visible from here.

The other is yours, and it is old. Families hand out jobs. Someone becomes the steady one, the listener, the person who keeps the peace. Those jobs were never written down, and nobody ever ended them.

So when she leans, you hold. You do not decide to. Her state lands in your body as a task, and you are already working before you notice.

The job was handed out in childhood. Nobody has ever taken it back.

    What this is not about

It is not about whether you love her. You can love a person and be drained by the role you play around them. Those are separate.

It is not about being a bad sibling. Feeling empty after a visit is information, not a failing.

And it is not yours to fix. You cannot make her ask about you. You can only decide what you hold, and for how long.

    What happens in your body

Watch what happens when her name lights up, or when she says, can I tell you something?

    [MECHANISM]

That heaviness in the chest is the body signal, the first physical sign that your own pattern is starting. You feel it a few seconds before you answer.

Those seconds are the window: the short stretch between the signal and the behavior. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measured rule.

What follows is your usual response. You settle in. You clear the evening. You say, of course, go ahead.

Then relief, because the hard part is avoided. That relief is why the next yes comes faster.

Three moves, and they are yours

This method names three moves. They are for your pattern, not your sister's. You cannot run them for anybody else.

    [FIELD ASSIGNMENT]

Catch: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. For you, that may be the heaviness as her name appears.

Intercept: interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. Say how long you have before the call begins. Then keep to it.

Rewrite: repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. Every call is another chance to practice.

One sentence you can use: "I have twenty minutes, and I want to hear about you." When the twenty minutes end, say goodbye warmly.

    What is in your control

You decide how much you hold, and when. A call can have an end time. A visit can have a length.

You can bring your own news into the room. Say it plainly, even if she moves past it. You are not testing her. You are stopping your own habit of leaving yourself out.

You can say the true thing once. "I love our talks. I come away tired, and I want to fix my side of that." That is information, not a charge.

And one thing is not in your control: how she takes it. No page can tell you that, and anybody who does is guessing.

    What it is costing you

Count it honestly. The evening after each visit. The dread when the phone rings. The guilt about the dread.

There is often more underneath. When you are always the steady one, the question of what you get stops being asked. The answer is always the same: she is my sister, so I hold it.

Why is my sister draining me?

This page cannot see her side, and it will not guess. It can see yours. You are probably playing an old family role: the listener, the steady one. That role costs effort every time, and nobody counts it. Notice which kind of contact costs the most. Then put a limit on that one first.

Why does my sister drain me emotionally?

Because you are working the whole time she is there. You read her mood. You steady it. You listen past the point where you have room. None of that looks like work from outside, so it never gets counted, even by you. The drain is the unpaid work. Name it to yourself, and stop doing the part nobody asked for.

If this is you rather than them

There is a file in this archive about the person who stays in a bond that drains them and keeps finding reasons to. It is written about the reader, not the sister.

If you recognized the hold that starts before you have decided anything, that file may be yours. It is the one pattern in this family you can work on directly.

    THE FIRST-PERSON FILE

The shape described on this page is filed as The Draining Bond. That file is written in the second person, for whoever is running it, about their own body. It is not a verdict about anybody else, and nobody can read it on someone else's behalf.

If this is you rather than them: Why can't I leave a relationship that is draining me?

    Questions people ask about this

Is it normal to feel drained by my sister?

This page does not rule on normal. What it can say is that the tired feeling is information. It tells you that you were working during the visit, whether or not anybody asked you to.

Why do I feel guilty for being drained by my sister?

Because the role says a good sibling holds whatever comes. That reasoning always arrives at the same answer, no matter what it costs you. Feeling empty after a visit is not a failing.

How do I protect my energy around my sister?

Give each call an end time and say it at the start. Bring your own news into the room. Decide in a calm week how much you can hold, so the answer is ready when she calls.

Should I tell my sister she drains me?

Telling her what she does tends to produce a defense. Telling her what you are changing on your side is different. "I come away tired, and I want to fix my side" is information.

Why does my sister only talk about herself?

This page cannot say what is behind it for her. What you can see is the shape: the talk runs one way. You can change your half by bringing your own news in, plainly.

Why do I always end up being the one who listens?

Families hand out roles, and listener is one of them. It was given before you could refuse it. The pull to settle in and listen starts with a body signal, and the signal is yours to catch.

What is the body signal when my sister calls?

Often a heaviness in the chest, a sigh, or a sinking feeling as her name appears. It comes a few seconds before you answer. Those seconds are where a different action can go.

Should I see my sister less?

That is yours to decide, and this page will not decide it for you. A smaller step comes first. Shorten the contact that costs the most, and see what changes.

Can I love my sister and still need distance?

Yes. Love and the role you play are separate. You can keep the first and change the second. Distance can be an end time on a call rather than a door closed.

Will my sister change if I pull back?

No page can say what she will do, and anybody who says so is guessing. What is in your control is your own side. That is not a small thing. It changes what each visit costs you.

    THE ARCHIVES

You cannot open her file. You can open yours, and it is the one with the old family job in it. The assessment names it and costs nothing.

9 PATTERNS  /  YOURS HAS A NAME  /  NO PAYMENT

The window is the gap between the first signal in your body and the behavior. Three to seven seconds is a working figure for that gap. It is drawn from what people report about their own sequences, not from a stopwatch in a laboratory. Some sequences run at the short end and some at the long, and the same person will find it varies. It is the scale you train toward after Catch. Catch is the first move: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Your body is not obliged to keep to that number.
