What do I do when my partner shuts down?

If either of you is afraid when the shutdown starts, read the box below first.

WRITTEN FOR THE PERSON STANDING NEXT TO IT

You were talking, and then they left. Not the room. The conversation. The face went flat, the answers went short, and you were talking to a wall that used to be your partner.

This page will not tell you what your partner is. Nobody here has met them. It will help you see what is happening and what to do while it happens. Read the first box before anything else.

    Before anything else

One kind of shutdown is not a pattern page problem, and it outranks the rest of this file.

If your partner goes blank because the room has become frightening, or you go quiet because you are afraid of what comes next, that is fear. Fear inside a household belongs with a person, not an article.

The same is true if a hard conversation has ever ended in shouting, throwing, or a door you could not get through.

    In the United States:

The National Domestic Violence Hotline. Call 1-800-799-7233 or text START to 88788. Confidential, around the clock, and they talk about safety planning as well as leaving.

988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.

    Emergency services: 911.

You can call those lines about a room that frightens you. You do not have to be certain first.

If that box is not yours, keep going. What follows assumes the shutdown is painful, not dangerous.

    What you are actually seeing

Look at when it happens, not what it is about. It rarely starts at the first sentence. It starts when the talk gets close to something real. A hurt is named. A need is asked for. Somebody cries.

Then the signs come in order. Eyes drop. The voice goes flat. Answers shrink to fine, I don't know, whatever you want. Sometimes they leave the room. Sometimes they stay and are not there.

Why it happens, in the pattern's terms

A shutdown is the body leaving before the person decides to. For some people, being seen in a hard moment reads as danger. The body answers by cutting the feeling off. What you see is the result: the lights go down.

That is why it happens in your best conversations too. The closer the talk gets, the more there is to be seen. One of the nine patterns this archive files is built on exactly that shape. Its name belongs to the person running it, so it is offered at the end of this page rather than pinned on your partner.

You push for more of them. Being seen is the thing their body is leaving.

    What this is not about

It does not mean they do not care. Indifference does not need to go blank. A shutdown happens when something matters too much to stay in the room with.

It is not something you caused by asking. Asking was fair. And it is not something you can talk them out of. The shutdown starts a few seconds before any choice, in a body you are not in. No better sentence reaches those seconds.

    What happens in your body

Watch yourself as their face goes flat. A jolt in the stomach. Heat in the face. A pull to say the thing louder, or to say it again with more words.

    [MECHANISM]

That jolt is the body signal, the first thing you feel as your own pattern starts. It comes a few seconds before you act.

What follows is your usual response. Pushing harder. Asking what is wrong four times. Crying to get a reaction. Going cold back.

Every one of those raises the exposure in the room, and exposure is what their body is leaving.

    What is in your control

Name it once, calmly, and offer a pause with a return time. Something like: you have gone quiet, so let's stop for an hour and come back at eight. A pause with a time is a door. A pause with no time is a wall.

Lower the size, not the subject. Sit beside them rather than across. Ask one short question instead of making a long case. Then keep the time you set, and bring the subject back once.

Decide, on a calm day, what you need for the subject to stay alive. That is yours to set, and saying it is not a threat.

    What it is costing you

Check what has changed in you. Whether you now rehearse hard conversations so they come out smaller. Whether you have stopped raising things at all. Whether you apologize at the first flat look, to bring them back.

Each of those is a pattern with its own file. The early apology has a body signal you can catch, a drop in the stomach just before the sorry leaves.

What do I do when my partner shuts down?

Stop pushing for the answer and name what you see. You have gone quiet. Let's stop and come back at eight. Then leave the room or change the subject, and keep the time. The aim in that moment is not to finish the talk. It is to keep the subject from dying, and to show the shutdown that it does not end things.

What do I do when my partner shuts down emotionally?

The emotional shutdown is the quieter kind. They are still talking, but the feeling has left the words. Do not chase the feeling with more of yours. Say once what you noticed: you sound far away. Then ask one small question they can answer. If nothing comes back, pause and set a time. A person cannot be argued back into feeling something.

What do I do when my partner shuts down during conflict?

Conflict is where exposure is highest, so it is where the shutdown fires most. Lower the heat before you lower the subject. Stop interrupting. Drop the list of past examples. Say the one thing you need in a single sentence. If they still go blank, call the pause yourself and set a return time. Then come back to the subject, once, when the time comes.

Why does a woman shut down emotionally?

This archive does not explain a whole sex, and it will not start here. A shutdown runs in women and in men, and the shape is the same: the talk gets close, being seen reads as danger, and the feeling goes offline. What you can see is one woman. Watch when her shutdowns start and what ends them. That tells you more than any rule about women.

Why do guys shut down emotionally?

For the same reasons on this page, and not because of what a man is. Some people learned early that showing a feeling cost them something. The body still answers that old cost in a hard talk today. That is a guess about a shape, not about your partner. Watch the person in front of you, and leave the claims about men in general alone.

If this is you rather than them

Some people read this page for a partner and recognize the blank face from the inside. The talk gets real, something goes numb, and the words stop.

The file below is The Disappearing Pattern, the pattern that makes distance when things get close. It is written for the person who goes blank, about their own body, not anybody else's.

    THE FIRST-PERSON FILE

The shape described on this page is filed as The Disappearing Pattern. That file is written in the second person, for whoever is running it, about their own body. It is not a verdict about anybody else, and nobody can read it on someone else's behalf.

If this is you rather than them: Why do I push people away when they get close?

    Questions people ask about this

What do I do when my partner shuts down?

Name it once, offer a pause, and set a time to come back. Then keep that time. The aim in the moment is to keep the subject alive, not to finish the talk.

Should I give my partner space when they shut down?

Yes, with a return time. Space with a time is a door. Space with no end turns the shutdown into the place the subject goes to die.

Why does my partner shut down when I try to talk about feelings?

Because feelings are where being seen is highest. For some people that reads as danger, and the body cuts the feeling off before any choice is made.

Does my partner shutting down mean they don't care?

Not on its own. Indifference does not need to go blank. A shutdown tends to happen when something matters too much to stay in the room with.

Did I cause my partner to shut down?

Asking a fair question is not a cause. The shutdown starts a few seconds before any choice, in a body you are not in.

Should I keep talking when my partner shuts down?

No. More words raise the exposure, and exposure is what their body is leaving. Say one short thing, then stop.

What do I say when my partner shuts down?

Something like: you have gone quiet, so let's stop and come back at eight. It names what happened, it is not an accusation, and it promises the subject a future.

Is shutting down the same as the silent treatment?

Not always. A shutdown is the body leaving a hard moment. A silence that ends only when you give something up is a punishment, and the box at the top of this page is for that.

Can a partner who shuts down change?

The mechanism can be interrupted, and the interruption happens in one body, theirs. This page makes no forecast about anyone. What is in reach is your own response.

What is the body signal when my partner shuts down?

Often a jolt in the stomach or heat in the face as their eyes drop. It comes a few seconds before you push harder. That is where you can choose a different action.

What if I am the one who shuts down?

Then the file linked at the end of this page is written for you. It is about the body that goes blank, and what it is protecting.
