Why does my teenager quit everything they are good at?

If your teenager talks about hurting themselves, stops eating, or seems afraid of someone, read the box below first.

WRITTEN FOR THE PERSON STANDING NEXT TO IT

They got good, and then they quit. The season they made the top team is the season they stopped going. The instrument came out of its case less and less, right after the recital went well.

This page is about your side of that. It will not tell you what your teenager is. That would be a verdict about someone who never opened a file here, and who is not yet an adult.

Start by telling two things apart. A teenager who is done with baseball is allowed to be done. That needs no mechanism. This page is about the quit that lands exactly when the thing starts to count.

    Before anything else

This goes first, and it is not an accusation. A teenager who drops the thing they were best at is sometimes leaving a place, not a sport. A coach, a team, a group chat, a changing room, an older kid.

Ask, calmly and more than once, whether something happened there. Do not decide in advance what you will find.

If your teenager talks about hurting themselves, stops eating, or cannot sleep, act on that today.

    In the United States:

Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline. Call or text 1-800-422-4453, staffed around the clock. It is used by parents ringing about themselves, and you can ring for advice without making an allegation.

988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.

Crisis Text Line. Text HOME to 741741, if a call is the part you cannot do.

    Emergency services: 911.

You can call the Lifeline about somebody else, and that includes your own child.

If the place they are leaving is home, that is hard to look at. It is also the most useful thing on this page, and nothing below is written to talk you out of it.

If none of that is where the answer is, looking still cost nothing. What follows assumes you have looked.

    What you are actually seeing

Not the quit after the losing season. The quit after the good one. The varsity letter, the solo, the first paid shift, and then the reasons start.

The reasons are fluent and each one is fair on its own. The coach is unfair. The team is boring now. I need more time for school. I never really liked it anyway.

This page cannot see inside your teenager, and it does not try. The reasons are not called lies here. What you can see from the hall is the timing, and the timing is the finding.

Then the next thing goes the same way. The band, after the first real gig. The art class, after the piece got put on the wall. Lay the last three out and look at when each one ended.

Why it lands when things are going well

Being good at a thing changes what the thing is. Before, it was fun. Now it can be judged, expected, compared, and lost. A rise is a distance to fall.

If that is what is running, quitting first is not a wish to fail. It arrives as good judgment. Nobody else gets to end it, and nobody gets to watch it go wrong.

A teenager is also still learning what being good costs. Every win raises the bar in the house, at school, on the team. Walking away is one way to put the bar back on the floor.

You cannot tell from the hall which of those is live for your child, and this page cannot either. That is a question for a calm day, not for the drive home from the last practice.

Being good at it made it something that could be lost.

    What this is not about

It is not laziness. A teenager who worked hard enough to get good is not short of effort. The quit comes after the work, not instead of it.

It is not a verdict about who they are. A shape seen three times is a shape, not a character. Say so out loud if you have said the other thing.

It is not fixed by forcing them to stay. A season finished under orders is a season about you. The sequence, if there is one, runs in a body that is not yours.

And it is not something you caused. You can change the house it runs in. You cannot run the three moves for anybody else.

    What happens in your body

Watch what happens in you when they say I am quitting. A drop in the stomach. Heat in the face. A speech forming before they have finished the sentence.

    [MECHANISM]

That drop is the body signal, the first physical sign that your own pattern is starting. You feel it before you decide anything.

After it comes the window, the few seconds between the signal and your usual response. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measured constant.

Then the usual response. The lecture about effort. The line about what it cost. The bargain. The silence that is louder than the lecture.

Each one makes the quit about you. None of them leaves room for the question that matters, which is what changed when it started going well.

    What is in your control

A teenager in your care lives in a house you run. A lot of what makes a win expensive happens in that house.

    [FIELD ASSIGNMENT]

Catch: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. For you, that is the drop as the word quit is said.

Intercept: interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. Do not give the speech. Ask one question and wait.

Rewrite: repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. Each quit is one more chance to practice it.

One question you can use, on a calm day and not in the car: "What changed after you made the team?" Then listen, and do not argue with the answer.

You can separate the decision from the timing. Finish the season, then decide. That is not a punishment. It moves the choice away from the week the thing started to count.

You can notice what you praise. If every word is about the trophy, the trophy is what counts in your house. Try naming the showing up instead: you went, and you kept going.

You can let your own good news stay good. A parent who plays down every win is teaching something no speech teaches. So is one who turns every win into the next target.

You can write down the timing for a few months. What came just before each quit. Look for what comes before, not who is to blame.

And one thing is not in your control: how fast anything changes. No page can give you a timeline, and anybody who does is guessing.

    What it is costing you

Check what has changed in you. Whether you brace when good news lands, because you know what comes a few weeks later. Whether you have stopped celebrating out loud for the same reason.

Whether you keep a ledger of fees and seasons and drives, and whether it has come out of your mouth. Whether the quit has become the only thing you and your teenager talk about.

Every one of those is a pattern with a file. The bracing when something goes right has a body signal you can catch, a few seconds before you say the thing that makes the win smaller.

    When to involve somebody else

Talk to their doctor if it is growing, or if sleep, eating or school change with it. Talk to them if the quitting has spread to friends, or if you simply cannot settle about it.

You do not need to be sure something is wrong to ask. Any question about what is going on inside your teenager belongs with that doctor. This page does not answer it, and no page about patterns should.

If this is you rather than them

There is a file in this archive about the person who leaves things right as they start to go well. It is written about the reader, not the child.

Have you left jobs, courses or people at exactly the point they got good? Then that file may be yours. It is the one pattern in this house you can work on directly.

    THE FIRST-PERSON FILE

The shape described on this page is filed as Success Sabotage. That file is written in the second person, for whoever is running it, about their own body. It is not a verdict about anybody else, and nobody can read it on someone else's behalf.

If this is you rather than them: Why do I sabotage myself when things are going well?

    Questions people ask about this

Why does my teenager quit everything they are good at?

This page cannot say, and it will not guess. What you can see is the timing: the quit after the good season, not the bad one. Being good turns a thing into something that can be lost, and leaving first is one way to not lose it.

Should I let my teenager quit a sport they are good at?

This page cannot decide that for you. It can say that the useful question is not whether, but when. Separate the decision from the week the thing started to count. Finish the season, then decide, together.

My son says he is quitting whether we want him to or not. What do I do?

Do not give the speech. Ask one question on a calm day: what changed after you made the team? Then listen. A quit announced as an ultimatum is often a quit that expects a fight, and you can decline the fight without declining him.

Why does my 13 year old not want to play the sport he used to love?

Sometimes because he is done, and that is allowed. Sometimes because getting good changed what the sport was. Look at when it stopped being fun. If it was right after it started going well, that is worth a calm question.

How do I tell ordinary loss of interest from this?

Timing. Ordinary loss of interest drifts in over a bad or boring stretch. This lands right after the win, the promotion, the solo. Lay the last three quits out and look at what came just before each one.

Is my teenager quitting because of me?

That is a verdict, and this method does not give them. What is true is that how your house treats a win, and how it treats a loss, is the part you can change. Start there rather than with blame.

Should I make them finish the season?

You can ask for the decision to wait until the season ends, and say why: not as a punishment, but so the choice is not made in the week the thing started to count. A season finished under orders alone is a season about you.

What do I say when my teenager says they are quitting?

Less than you want to. Something like: I heard you. I am not going to argue tonight. Tell me tomorrow what changed. Then leave the room before the speech arrives.

Why does the quit come right after they did well?

Because doing well raises the bar and makes the thing something that can be taken. Quitting first means nobody else gets to end it. That is not a wish to fail. It arrives as good judgment, which is why the reasons sound so fair.

What is the body signal when my teenager says they are quitting?

Often a drop in the stomach, heat in the face, or a speech forming before they finish. It comes a few seconds before you act. That is the window where you can choose a different action.

When should I talk to a doctor about my teenager quitting things?

If it is growing, if sleep, eating or school change with it, if the quitting has spread to friends, or if you cannot settle about it. You do not need to be sure something is wrong to ask.

What if my teenager talks about hurting themselves?

Then act today. In the United States, call or text 988, and you can call about your child. Text HOME to 741741. Emergency services, 911.

    THE ARCHIVES

The file you can open is your own, and in this house it is the one you can change. The assessment names it and costs nothing.

9 PATTERNS  /  YOURS HAS A NAME  /  NO PAYMENT

The window is the gap between the first signal in your body and the behavior. Three to seven seconds is a working figure for that gap. It is drawn from what people report about their own sequences, not from a stopwatch in a laboratory. Some sequences run at the short end and some at the long, and the same person will find it varies. It is the scale you train toward after Catch. Catch is the first move: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Your body is not obliged to keep to that number.
