What do I do about a perfectionist partner?

Pick one room or one job this week that belongs to you, done your way, and agree that nobody redoes it.

WRITTEN FOR THE PERSON STANDING NEXT TO IT

The trip took four months to plan. It was lovely, and they spent half of it fixing what was not quite right. At home the evenings go to small jobs that were already done.

Before you read on, write down one evening this month that their standard took from the two of you. Just the date and what it went on. This page will come back to it.

This page is about your side of that. It will not tell you what your partner is. That would be a verdict about someone who never opened a file here.

    What you are actually seeing

The bar is mostly aimed at themselves. Their work, their cooking, the way the house looks when people come. They are harder on their own effort than on anybody else's.

It still spills onto you. Plans wait until they can be done properly. A shared job takes three times as long. Rest arrives only when everything is finished, and everything is never finished.

And you watch them get tired. Not lazy tired. Tired from holding a standard nobody asked them to hold.

One thing outranks the rest of this page. If the standard has turned on you, and comes with anger, threats or fear, if you are keeping the house perfect to avoid an explosion rather than a mood, this is no longer the right page.

A pattern explains a shape. It never excuses harm, and it is never a reason to stay somewhere unsafe.

    Why done is never done

Unfinished work cannot be judged. While it is still being fixed, nobody can say it is not good enough. That is why the last pass feels safer than stopping.

So the standard can be doing a job that has little to do with the kitchen or the trip. It keeps a feared moment away: being seen to get it wrong.

That is also why your reassurance does not reach it. It looks great is true, and it lands as one more opinion to check against.

The job was done an hour ago. The standard is still working.

    What this is not about

It is not that they think you are not good enough. When the bar turns mostly inward, your effort is rarely the thing being judged.

If the bar does land mostly on you, on how you load the dishwasher and fold the towels, that is a different shape. This archive has a separate page for it.

And it is not yours to fix. You did not set their standard, and you cannot lower it for them. You can only change what it costs the two of you.

    What happens in your body

Notice what happens in you when the evening goes to one more job. A tight chest. A sigh you hold in. A pull to take over, or to give up on the plan.

    [MECHANISM]

That tightening is the body signal, the first physical sign that a pattern of your own is starting.

It comes in the window, the few seconds between the signal and what you do. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measured rule.

What follows is your usual response. Doing it yourself to end it faster. A sharp comment about the time. Going quiet and making other plans.

Each one ends the evening. None of them changes what the next evening will go on.

    What is in your control

You share a house, so more is in your hands here than with a friend or a coworker.

Divide domains. Each of you owns some rooms or jobs, done to the owner's standard, and the other does not redo them. That protects them from your rough work and you from their bar.

Agree what done means for shared things before you start. The trip plan is done on a set date. The party food is done at six.

Protect time that is not for projects. One evening a week where nothing gets fixed. Say it in a calm week, not in the middle of the redo.

Say the true thing once. "I would rather have you on the sofa than the kitchen perfect." Then stop. A third round is an argument.

Do not take over to save them. It ends one evening and tells them the job was not good enough to leave.

    What it is costing you

Evenings, mostly. Plans that wait. A home that is lovely and not quite restful.

Sometimes it starts something in you. Tidying before they get home. Doing things their way to avoid the redo. Feeling like a guest in your own kitchen. That habit has a body signal, and it runs in a body you occupy.

My partner is a perfectionist: what am I living with?

You are living beside a standard that mostly runs on them, and spills onto your shared time. Look at the cost in evenings, plans and rest, not in their character. Whether it is a boyfriend, a girlfriend or a wife, the shape is the same: done is never quite done, and the last pass feels safer than stopping. That is a record, not a verdict.

How do I deal with a perfectionist partner?

Change the terms of the shared house, not the person. Divide domains so nobody redoes anybody. Agree what done means for shared jobs before they start. Protect one evening a week from projects. Say the true thing once, then stop. If the standard has turned on you with anger or fear, the box near the top of this page comes first.

How do I live with a perfectionist partner?

Give the standard a place, so it does not run the whole house. Their domains are done their way. Yours are done your way, and they stay done. Shared plans get an agreed end date. Keep some time that belongs to neither project nor standard, and guard it. Watch your own habits too: tidying before they get home is a pattern of your own starting.

How do I help a perfectionist partner?

You cannot lower their bar for them, and pushing tends to make it a fight. What helps is a house where rough things are allowed. Be rough in front of them. Praise the finishing, not the polish. Say once that you would rather have them than the result. Do not take over to save them. The rest is theirs to work on, if they choose.

If this is you rather than them

There is a file in this archive about the person whose work is never quite finished. It is The Perfectionism Trap, the sequence where an unfinished thing cannot be judged, so it stays unfinished. It is written about the reader, not the partner.

Did you read this and recognize the extra pass at ten at night? Then that file may be yours.

    THE FIRST-PERSON FILE

The shape described on this page is filed as The Perfectionism Trap. That file is written in the second person, for whoever is running it, about their own body. It is not a verdict about anybody else, and nobody can read it on someone else's behalf.

If this is you rather than them: Why can't I finish anything?

    Questions people ask about this

How do I deal with a perfectionist partner?

Change the terms of the shared house. Divide domains so nobody redoes anybody, agree what done means for shared jobs, and protect one evening a week from projects.

Why does my partner redo things that are already done?

Because finishing is the moment the work can be judged. One more pass keeps that moment away. Your reassurance does not reach it, because it lands as one more opinion to check.

Should I tell my partner they are a perfectionist?

It lands as a verdict, however it is meant. Talk about the cost instead, in plain terms: I miss our evenings. That is information, and information can be received.

How do I live with a perfectionist wife or husband?

Give the standard a place so it does not run the whole house. Their domains are done their way, yours stay done your way, and shared plans get an agreed end.

What if my partner redoes the chores I do?

Agree who owns which jobs, and that the other does not redo them. If the redo comes with contempt or anger aimed at you, that is a different shape, and the box near the top of this page comes first.

How do I help my partner relax?

You cannot make them, and pushing can turn it into one more thing to get right. Protect time where nothing gets fixed, and be rough in front of them.

Is it my fault my partner is a perfectionist?

No. You did not set their bar, and you cannot lower it. What is yours is how you respond, and the terms of the house you share.

Should I just do everything their way?

It ends the redo for a while and costs you your own way of doing things. Divide domains instead, so each of you has jobs that stay done.

What is the body signal when the evening goes to another job?

Often a tight chest or a held sigh, a few seconds before you act. Notice it. Those seconds are where you can choose a different action.

    Can my partner change?

This page makes no forecast about any one person. Only the person running a pattern can interrupt it. What is in your reach is the house you share and your own response.

Why do I feel like a guest in my own home?

Because their standard has started to run your habits too: tidying before they get home, doing things their way to avoid the redo. That habit is yours, and it is the part you can change.

    THE ARCHIVES

You cannot open their file. You can open yours. The assessment names the pattern running in you while you lived beside their standard, at no cost.

The window is the gap between the first signal in your body and the behavior. Three to seven seconds is a working figure for that gap. It is drawn from what people report about their own sequences, not from a stopwatch in a laboratory. Some sequences run at the short end and some at the long, and the same person will find it varies. It is the scale you train toward after Catch. Catch is the first move: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Your body is not obliged to keep to that number.
