Why does my parent vent to me about everything?

If your parent talks about being hurt at home, or about not wanting to live, read the box below first.

WRITTEN FOR THE PERSON STANDING NEXT TO IT

Your parent calls, and you already know. You know the subject, how long it runs, and how you will feel after.

This page is about your side of the call. It will not tell you what your parent is. That would be a verdict about someone who never opened a file here.

    What you are actually seeing

Some of what a parent says is not venting. If they talk about not wanting to live, or being hurt at home, act on that first.

    In the United States:

988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.

The National Domestic Violence Hotline. Call 1-800-799-7233 or text START to 88788. Confidential, around the clock, and they talk about safety planning as well as leaving.

    Emergency services: 911.

You do not have to carry that alone. Call one of these today, for them or for yourself.

The same few subjects come back each time. The other parent. Money. A brother or sister. Old history you were not there for.

Advice does not land. Offer a plan and it gets a reason it will not work. Then the story picks up where it stopped.

That is the tell. Someone working a problem wants it solved. Someone releasing pressure wants a listener, and with a parent, the listener was chosen long ago.

Why does it always land on me?

Often it started early. Maybe you were the calm child, or the one who noticed things. Maybe the other parent left, or went quiet.

A child who listens well becomes the listener. Nobody decides this on purpose. The role settles, and then it stays.

Now you are an adult, and the role still has its old shape. Your parent is not calling who you are now. They are calling who was always there.

What this feels like in the body

Many people describe the same thing. A weight in the chest when the name lights up the screen. Shoulders rising before a word is said.

    [MECHANISM]

The weight is the body signal, the first physical sign. It comes three to seven seconds before you decide anything about the call.

What follows is not a choice to listen. It is a habit older than your adult life.

The flat, used-up feeling afterward is the cost of the hour. It is not a verdict on the relationship.

    What this is not about

Wanting a shorter call does not make you ungrateful. It is not the same as wanting less of your parent.

This pattern works by making those two feel identical. Keeping them apart is most of the work.

It is also not something you can fix by listening better. More listening is more supply. The calls have not shrunk, however well you listened.

What is actually in your control

With a friend, you can step back from the friendship. With a parent, most people do not want that. So the work here is smaller and more exact.

Name the length at the start. "I have twenty minutes, then I need to go." Said early, it is a fact. Said at minute fifty, it sounds like a punishment.

Pick one subject you will not carry. Often it is the other parent. You can say, "I love you both, and I can't be the one who hears this."

Stop offering fixes that are never taken. Listening without repairing is a real thing to give. It costs less than the last ten years have.

Let some calls go to voicemail, and call back when you have something left. That is not a verdict. It is a fact about your evening.

If this is you rather than them

There is a file in this archive about the person who cannot limit what they carry for others. It is written about the reader, not the caller.

If what stayed with you was the guilt of saying no, more than the tiredness of saying yes, that file may be yours.

    THE FIRST-PERSON FILE

The shape described on this page is filed as The Draining Bond. That file is written in the second person, for whoever is running it, about their own body. It is not a verdict about anybody else, and nobody can read it on someone else's behalf.

If this is you rather than them: Why can't I leave a relationship that is draining me?

    Questions people ask about this

Why does my parent vent to me about everything?

Usually because the role settled long ago. A child who listened well became the listener. Your parent is releasing pressure rather than asking for a plan, and you are where it has always gone.

Is it wrong to ask my mom not to vent to me?

No. Asking for a shorter call, or for one subject left out, is not asking for less of your parent. The two only feel the same because the pattern joins them.

Why does my mother tell me about her problems with my father?

Because you are the one listener who knows them both. That makes you useful to her and stuck for you. You can love both parents and still step out of that one subject.

What is the body signal before I pick up?

A weight in the chest or shoulders when their name appears. It arrives three to seven seconds before you decide anything. That gap is where a different action is still possible.

Why does listening more not help?

Because more listening is more supply, not less need. It does not empty the pressure. That is why the calls have not shrunk, however well you have listened.

Should I keep giving my parent advice?

Only if advice has ever been taken. If every idea gets a reason it will not work, the call was not asking for one. Listening without fixing is enough.

How do I tell my parent I can't listen for hours?

Say the length at the start, not the end. "I have twenty minutes tonight." Early, it sounds like a fact. Late, it sounds like a punishment, even when it is not one.

Am I a bad son or daughter for letting a call go to voicemail?

No. A missed call shows what you had left to give that evening. It is not a judgment on your parent, and it is not a judgment on you.

What if my parent talks about being hurt, or about not wanting to live?

Then it is not venting, and this page is not the help. In the United States, call or text 988, or your local emergency number. You do not have to carry it alone.

Can I change how my parent handles stress?

Not directly. You can change what reaches you: the length, the subjects, the hour. The rest belongs to your parent, and it always did.

    THE ARCHIVES

You cannot open your parent's file. You can open yours. The assessment names the pattern running in you, at no cost.

9 PATTERNS  /  YOURS HAS A NAME  /  NO PAYMENT

The window is the gap between the first signal in your body and the behavior. Three to seven seconds is a working figure for that gap. It is drawn from what people report about their own sequences, not from a stopwatch in a laboratory. Some sequences run at the short end and some at the long, and the same person will find it varies. It is the scale you train toward after Catch. Catch is the first move: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Your body is not obliged to keep to that number.
