Am I responsible for whether they get better?

WRITTEN FOR THE PERSON STANDING NEXT TO IT

The answer is no and it stings. It stings because giving it up feels like giving up on them, and those are not the same act, and almost nobody in your position can tell them apart at first.

So this page is going to be specific about why it was never available to you, rather than reassuring about how much you have tried. You know how much you have tried.

    What you are actually carrying

A second set of accounts. Their state, tracked continuously, alongside your own life. How they sounded on the phone. Whether the message came back. What kind of week it looks like from the tone of three sentences.

None of that is counted anywhere. It has no hours attached to it, nobody thanks you for it, and it does not stop when you go to bed. It is the reason you are tired in a way that sleep does not fix.

You have also almost certainly stopped bringing your own difficulties into the relationship, on the grounds that they have enough to deal with. That decision was kind and it converted a relationship into a service.

Why can't I make them get better?

Because the mechanism is in their body and so is the only moment it can be reached. Whatever is running in them arrives as a physical event and produces a behavior a few seconds later, and there is no version of your effort that fits inside those seconds.

That is not a rule the archive invented to be strict about who is allowed to help. It is a fact about where the gap is. You cannot occupy somebody else's three to seven seconds, however early you spot it coming and however precisely you name it.

People in your position search for this in a handful of shapes, and every one of them is asking to be given a job:

    • “am I responsible for their healing”
    • “how do I help someone who will not help themselves”
    • “am I enabling them by staying”
    • “how do I support someone without losing myself”

The last one is the only answerable question in the set. The first three are asking for a role that does not exist, and the reason they keep getting asked is that having no role at all is much harder to sit with than being told you are doing it wrong.

    What this is not about

It is not about you not caring enough. That conclusion is the one you reach at three in the morning and it is the least supported one available. Nobody carrying a second set of accounts for years has a caring deficit.

It is not about you not saying it well enough. There is no better version of the sentence. The sentence has been said, and heard, and agreed with, and something older than the sentence decided.

And enabling is not a useful word here, because it is aimed at your character rather than at anything you can measure. The narrower question underneath it is the one worth asking: are you spending more than you have. That is countable, and it does not require a verdict on what kind of person you are.

What is actually in your control

Staying reachable, which is smaller than what you want to do and is the only thing with a proven use. Somebody who has not been forced to defend themselves to you is somebody who can still call you.

Saying the true thing once, plainly, and then not repeating it. Repetition after the first time adds no weight and adds a reason to avoid you.

Deciding your own cost in advance, while nothing is happening. How much of your week, how many calls after midnight, how many times you can hear the same account without it changing you. That decision made in a calm hour is worth ten made during a crisis.

And putting your own difficulties back into the relationship. Not as a demand and not as a bargaining chip. Because a relationship in which only one person is allowed to be struggling has stopped being one, and both of you can feel it even if neither has said so.

    What this is costing you

More than you have checked, and it is worth checking rather than estimating. The monitoring, the rehearsing of conversations, the weeks organized around somebody else's state, the ordinary bad days you stopped mentioning.

There is a version of this where the carrying is itself a sequence, with its own cue and its own physical marker, usually a weight arriving across the shoulders when their name appears on the phone. In that version the reasoning for continuing sounds exactly like decency, and it arrives at the same answer no matter what the month contained.

That is the one pattern in this whole situation that is inside a body you occupy.

If this is you rather than them

The file below is written for whoever is running it, in the second person, about their own body. It is not a verdict about you and nobody can read it on your behalf.

If the reasoning for staying inside this arrangement reaches the same conclusion whatever the evidence was, that file is the one describing the shape you are in.

    THE FIRST-PERSON FILE

The shape described on this page is filed as The Draining Bond. That file is written in the second person, for whoever is running it, about their own body. It is not a verdict about anybody else, and nobody can read it on someone else's behalf.

If this is you rather than them: Why can't I leave a relationship that drains me?

    Questions people ask about this

Am I responsible for whether they get better?

No. The mechanism runs in their body and the gap it can be caught in is theirs, which means it was never withheld from you by effort or by skill. What is yours is whether you stay reachable, what you are willing to carry, and the sequence this carrying is running in you.

Am I responsible for their healing?

No, and giving that up is harder than it sounds because it feels like abandonment and is not the same act. You cannot occupy somebody else's three to seven seconds, however early you see it coming.

Am I enabling them by staying close?

That word is aimed at your character rather than at anything measurable. The narrower question underneath it is countable: are you spending more than you have. Answer that one and you will not need the label.

Why does my advice make things worse?

Because advice arrives at the part of them that already agrees with you, and the part making the decision runs seconds ahead of any sentence. Being made to defend a position tends to entrench it, which is why the fifth conversation goes worse than the first.

How do I help someone who will not help themselves?

By staying reachable and by stopping the performance of patience you do not have. That is much less than you want to do and it is the only part with a proven use. The rest is not available to you at any level of effort.

Is it my fault if something happens to them?

No. You are not the mechanism and you were never in the room where it gets decided. That sentence will not stop the feeling, and the feeling is worth examining as information about your own load rather than as a verdict on your effort.

How do I set a limit without abandoning them?

Decide it in a calm hour rather than during a crisis, keep it about your capacity rather than about their behavior, and state it once. A limit that carries a verdict inside it becomes ammunition later. One about your own hours does not.

Why am I so tired when I am not the one struggling?

Because you are running continuous monitoring of another person's state alongside your own life, and it never stops or gets counted as work. That load has its own shape, its own body marker and its own file.

    Should I give an ultimatum?

Nobody outside your life should answer that. What is worth knowing is that an ultimatum aimed at producing recovery is aimed at a mechanism you cannot reach, and one about your own limits is aimed at something you can. Those two get confused under pressure.

Why do I feel guilty for wanting my own life back?

Because a claim that your cost counts is the exact claim this kind of arrangement is built to prevent. The guilt arrives on schedule rather than in proportion, which is what tells you it is mechanical rather than moral.

Is wanting to step back the same as giving up on them?

No, and conflating the two is what keeps people in place for years. Stepping back from carrying their recovery is not stepping back from the person. One of those was never yours. The other still is, if you want it.

What is happening to me while I carry this?

Usually a pattern of your own, running quietly. Over functioning, monitoring, reasoning that sounds like decency and reaches the same answer whatever happened. That sequence is the one thing in this situation you can actually interrupt.
