Why does my partner keep trying to make me jealous?
Read this for yourself. Nothing here is for handing to the other person.
WRITTEN FOR THE PERSON STANDING NEXT TO IT
A name gets mentioned, and they watch. Someone at work who is very funny. A message they let you see. The ex, again, in a story that did not need the ex in it.
Then they look at your face. Notice that look, because it is the most useful thing on this page. Read the rest for your side of it. This page will not tell you what your partner is. That would be a verdict about someone who never opened a file here.
What you are actually seeing
Two things happen together. First, something is put in front of you: a name, a story, a comparison. Second, your reaction is read. The second part is the one that matters.
It tends to land when things are calm, or when you have been busy, away, or happy about something that did not include them. It rarely lands in the middle of a fight. It lands when the room is quiet enough to read you.
One thing outranks the rest of this page. If the jealousy runs the other way too, if your phone is read, your hours are checked, or your friends are pushed out, this is no longer the right page.

A pattern explains a shape. It never excuses harm, and it is never a reason to stay somewhere unsafe while you wait for someone to change.
Why it may happen
From the outside, a jealousy move often works as a check. Do you still care? Would you mind losing me? Asking that straight is a risk. Watching your face is not.
If you react, the check gets an answer: you mind, so you care. If you stay calm, it can read as not caring, and the next move comes bigger. Either way, the answer only lasts a little while. That is why it keeps coming back.
That is one shape that fits. It is not a verdict about your partner, and the reason they do it is not readable from your side of the room.
You are being asked a question with no words in it. Your face is the answer they are reading.
What this is not about
It is not about the person who was named. They are only the tool, and competing with them is a contest nobody set up for you to win.
It is not caused by you. You did not create the need to check, and you cannot answer it so well that it stops.
And it is not yours to fix. What moves in them when they watch your face happens in a body you are not in.
What happens in your body
Notice what happens in you when the name comes up. Heat in the face. A tight chest. A sudden need to ask one more question about them.
[MECHANISM]
That heat is a body signal, the first physical sign that your own pattern is starting.
The window is the few seconds between that signal and what you do next. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measurement.
Your usual response may be the cold silence, the sharp question, or checking their phone later. Each one hands the check its answer.
What is in your control
Name the move once, on a calm day, without heat. "When you bring up other people like that, it feels like you're checking whether I care. I do. You can ask me."
Do not perform the reaction. You do not have to fake calm, and you do not have to show alarm. A plain answer is enough: "Sounds like a good story." Then go on with the evening.
Do not compete. Do not ask for details about the person, the message, or the ex. Each question tells the check it worked.
And decide what you will stay for, in advance and while calm. Not as a warning. So that you already know it when the next name comes up.
What it is costing you
Check what has changed. Whether you watch your own face around them. Whether you have started checking who they talk to. Whether you feel smaller after every comparison and do not say so.
That last one is worth your attention. Being measured against someone who is not in the room wears on you, and nobody counts it as a cost.
Why does my boyfriend always try to make me jealous?
This page cannot read his reasons, and it will not guess. It can describe the move. Something is shown to you, and your face is read. That reading is a way of asking whether you care, without the risk of asking. You can answer the real question in words, once: "I care. You don't need to test it." Then stop reacting to the tests.
Why does my partner always bring up their ex?
Sometimes an ex comes up because a past is part of a life, and that is ordinary. The useful question is what the mention does. Does it come with a look at your face? Does it come when things are calm? Does it come back when you seem happy? If so, the ex is less a story than a check. Say what you notice, once, plainly.
Why does my girlfriend always compare me to her ex?
A comparison puts you in a contest with someone who is not there. You cannot win it, because the other person cannot lose. Do not argue the points. Say how it lands: "When you compare me to him, I feel measured. I'd rather you just tell me what you want from me." That turns a contest into a request, which is something you can answer.
If this is you rather than them
Some people read this page for a partner and recognize the move from the other side. The name dropped in, the quick look at their face, the relief when they mind. There is a file on The Testing Pattern, where a check lands on someone close to see whether they stay. It is written about the reader, not anyone else.
THE FIRST-PERSON FILE
The shape described on this page is filed as The Testing Pattern. That file is written in the second person, for whoever is running it, about their own body. It is not a verdict about anybody else, and nobody can read it on someone else's behalf.

Why does my partner try to make me jealous?
From the outside, it often works as a check: do you still care. Asking straight is a risk, and watching your face is not. That is a shape, not a verdict about your partner.
Should I react when my partner tries to make me jealous?
You do not have to fake calm or show alarm. A plain answer is enough. Then name the move once, on a calm day, and answer the real question in words.
Why does my partner always bring up their ex?
Sometimes a past is simply part of a life. Watch what the mention does. If it comes with a look at your face, and comes back when you seem happy, it is working as a check.
How do I respond when my partner compares me to their ex?
Do not argue the points. Say how it lands, and ask for what they want from you instead. That turns a contest you cannot win into a request you can answer.
Is it my fault my partner tries to make me jealous?
No. You did not create the need to check, and you cannot answer it so well that it stops. That part happens in a body you are not in.
Why do I feel so small after my partner mentions other people?
Because being measured against someone who is not there wears on you. It is a real cost, and it is worth saying out loud, once, to your partner.
Should I ask questions about the person they mentioned?
Try not to. Each question tells the check it worked, and the next one comes sooner. If you need to know something real, ask it on a calm day.
Why does it happen when things are going well?
A check tends to land when the room is quiet enough to read you. A calm evening is when a question with no words in it is easiest to ask.
What if my partner checks my phone too?
Then read the box near the top of this page. Jealousy that comes with your phone read, your hours checked, or your friends pushed out is no longer the shape this page describes.
Can I make my partner stop trying to make me jealous?
No. What moves in them happens in their body. What you can change is whether each move gets the reaction it is fishing for.
Why do I check who my partner talks to now?
Because the checks have started a pattern of your own. It has a body signal, often heat in the face, and it is the part of this you can catch.
THE ARCHIVES
You cannot open their file. You can open yours. The assessment names the pattern that has been running in you while you watched your own face, and it costs nothing.
