Why does my child's father ignore me?
If the silence is used to frighten you, or your child is unsafe on his time, read the box below first.
WRITTEN FOR THE PERSON STANDING NEXT TO IT
You sent the message about pickup again. It shows as read. No reply. He talks to your child on the phone and acts as if you are not in the room, or he goes quiet on everybody.
This page will not tell you what he is. Nobody here has met him. It will help you sort what you are seeing and keep your child's life moving. Read the first box before anything else.
Before anything else
One kind of silence outranks the rest of this page.
Some silence between parents is used as a weapon. It ends only when you give something up. It shows up as missed pickups, held money, or messages passed through the child. Silence used like that is control, and control belongs with a person, not an article.
The same is true if you are afraid of him, or afraid for your child when they are with him.

The National Domestic Violence Hotline. Call 1-800-799-7233 or text START to 88788. Confidential, around the clock, and they talk about safety planning as well as leaving.
Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline. Call or text 1-800-422-4453, staffed around the clock. It is used by parents ringing about themselves, and you can ring for advice without making an allegation.
988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.
Emergency services: 911.
You can call those lines for advice. You do not have to be certain, and you do not have to make an accusation to ask.
If that box is not yours, keep going. What follows assumes the silence is a strain, not a danger.
What you are actually seeing
Look at what he answers and what he does not. Often the pattern is narrow. He replies about money, or not. He talks to the child, but not to you. Anything that sounds like the two of you gets nothing.
That narrowness is worth noticing. It tells you the silence has a target. The target may not be you as you are now. It may be what the two of you used to be.
Why it happens, in the pattern's terms
For some people, the person they were closest to stays the most exposing person in their life. Talking to you can reopen what ended. So the body makes distance, and silence is the cheapest distance there is.
There are other reasons a father goes quiet: shame about money, a new partner, or anger he never put down. You cannot tell from outside which one it is. Nor does this page need to know to help you.
You are asking about Tuesday. He is answering a question from years ago.
What this is not about
It is not a verdict on you as a parent. A man who ignores the mother of his child is telling you about his distance, not your worth.
And it is not something you can fix with the right message. You can be polite, brief, and fair, and still get nothing back. That is not a failure of tone.
What happens in your body
Watch what happens when the message shows as read. Heat in the face. A clenched jaw. A pull to send a second message with everything you have been holding back.
[MECHANISM]
That heat is the body signal, the first thing you feel as your own pattern starts. It comes a few seconds before your thumb moves.
What follows is your usual response. A long message. A sharp one. A message to the child that is really for him.
Each one gives the silence something to answer, or something to ignore again.
What is in your control
Keep the channel small. Write about the child only. One topic per message. A time, a place, a cost. No history, no feelings, no questions about why.
Keep it written. A shared calendar or a co-parenting app keeps dates and costs in one place. It also keeps a record, which matters if things change.
Do not pass messages through your child. A child who carries messages between parents carries the silence too.
Make plans that do not depend on his reply. Then tell him the plan, once, and keep it.
What it is costing you
Check what the waiting is doing to you. Whether you now draft every message three times. Whether your evenings bend around his phone. Whether you soften your own needs so he might answer.
Each of those is a pattern with its own file, and each has a body signal you can catch before the next message goes.
Why does my child's father ignore me?
This page cannot see inside him and will not guess. From outside, there are a few shapes. His silence may be aimed at the old relationship, not at you now. It may come from shame, a new life, or old anger. Or it may be a weapon, which is the first box. Whichever it is, keep your messages short, written, and about the child only.
If he answers about the child and nothing else, that is a channel you can work with.
If this is you rather than them
Some people read this page and recognize the silence from the other side. You go quiet with the other parent because every message reopens something.
The file below is The Disappearing Pattern, the pattern that makes distance when things get close. It is written for the person who goes quiet, about their own body, not anybody else's.
THE FIRST-PERSON FILE
The shape described on this page is filed as The Disappearing Pattern. That file is written in the second person, for whoever is running it, about their own body. It is not a verdict about anybody else, and nobody can read it on someone else's behalf.
If this is you rather than them: Why do I push people away when they get close?Questions people ask about this
Why does my child's father ignore me but talk to our child?
Talking to the child does not reopen the relationship. Talking to you can. The silence may be aimed at what the two of you were, not at you now.
How do I communicate with a co-parent who ignores me?
Keep it short, written, and about the child only. One topic per message. Make plans that do not depend on a reply, and tell him the plan once.
Should I keep messaging my child's father if he never answers?
Send what the child's life needs, once. Do not chase a reply about anything else. Each extra message gives the silence more to ignore.
Is my child's father ignoring me a form of control?
It can be. If the silence comes with missed pickups, held money, or messages through the child, treat it as control. The box at the top lists people to talk to.
Should I ask my child to pass messages to their father?
No. A child who carries messages between parents carries the silence too. Use a written channel between the adults.
Why does my child's father only answer about money?
Money is a topic with edges. It does not ask him to feel anything about the two of you. Keep other messages just as narrow and he may answer those too.
Is it my fault my child's father ignores me?
That is a verdict, and this method does not give them. His silence is his. Your own response to it is the part you can change.
Should I tell my child their father is ignoring me?
Keep the adult silence between adults. A child who is told about it takes a side or carries the weight. Tell them plans, not grievances.
What is the body signal when my child's father ignores me?
Often heat in the face or a clenched jaw as the message shows as read. It comes a few seconds before you write the second message. That is where a different action can be chosen.
Will my child's father ever start talking to me again?
This page makes no forecast about him. What is in reach is a channel that works without his warmth: short, written, about the child.
What if I am the one who ignores my child's other parent?
Then the file linked at the end of this page may be yours. It is about the body that makes distance from someone it was once close to.
