How do I help someone who is burnt out?
If they talk about not wanting to be here, read the box below first.
WRITTEN FOR THE PERSON STANDING NEXT TO IT
A weekend off no longer fixes it. They come back from a vacation as tired as they left. They answer texts late, then not at all. You want to help, and nothing you offer seems to land.
Before you read on, write down one thing they do every week that you could do instead. Keep it small and concrete. This page will come back to it.
This page is about your side of that. It will not tell you what they are. That would be a verdict about someone who never opened a file here.
Before anything else
Tired is one thing. Some signs mean something else, and they go first.
If they talk about not wanting to be alive, or about hurting themselves, act on it today. Act today too if they have stopped eating, or have not slept properly for many nights.
In the United States:
988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.
Crisis Text Line. Text HOME to 741741, if a call is the part you cannot do.
Emergency services: 911.
You can call the Lifeline about somebody else. You do not need to be sure before you call.
If none of that is in the room, what follows assumes you have looked.
What you are actually seeing
They are still doing the work. That is often the strange part. The work gets done, and the person doing it is gone by eight at night.
Plans get cancelled, politely. Things they loved sit untouched. A small request, like choosing a restaurant, gets a long silence. They say they are fine and look like they have not slept.
And your help keeps bouncing off. You suggest a break and they say they cannot. You send an article and it goes unread. You offer to talk and they say there is nothing to say.
Why rest does not seem to reach it
Burnt out names a state. A state has no start you can point to and no moment you can catch. That is why rest feels like the answer and does not work: it treats the state and leaves whatever made it running.
Sometimes what made it is plain load. Too much work, too few people, a care role with no end. That is not a pattern. It is arithmetic, and no page about patterns should pretend otherwise.
Sometimes there is a sequence underneath. The work is never released until it is perfect. Every task gets one more pass at night. The bar moves each time it is reached. From outside, you cannot tell which one you are looking at, and this page cannot either.
The vacation ended. The standard they took with them did not.
What this is not about
It is not that you have not helped enough. You cannot rest on somebody else's behalf. No amount of your effort reaches inside their week.
It is not laziness, and it is not weakness. A person who cannot stop working is not lazy. A person who keeps going while empty is not weak.
And it is not yours to fix. You did not cause it, and you cannot end it. What you can do is smaller, and it is real.
What happens in your body
Notice what happens in you when they cancel again, or say they are fine. A tight chest. A sinking feeling. A strong pull to fix it, right now, with a plan.
[MECHANISM]
That pull is the body signal, the first physical sign that a pattern of your own is starting.
It comes in the window, the few seconds between the signal and what you do. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measured rule.
What follows is your usual response. A lecture about rest. A list of things they should try. Going quiet because nothing worked.
Each one adds a task to a person who has none left to give.
What is in your control
Take one named thing off their plate. Not "let me know if you need anything". That hands them one more decision. Say instead: "I am bringing dinner on Thursday." Then bring it.
Do not open a fixing project. No reading lists, no routines, no plan for their recovery. Those turn your care into one more thing to get right.
Say the true thing once. "You look worn down, and I am not asking you to explain it. I am around." Then leave it there.
Keep the door cheap. Invitations with no cost to decline. A walk where talking is optional. A message that needs no reply.
And keep your own limit. You can help a tired person without becoming the next tired person.
What it is costing you
Probably more than you have counted. Checking your phone for their reply. Planning around their energy. Holding back your own news because it feels like too much.
Watching somebody run empty can start something in you. Over-giving, so they never have to ask. Going quiet, so you are not one more demand. Each of those has a body signal, and that signal is inside a body you occupy.
How do I help someone who is burnt out?
Reduce what they carry, and add nothing to it. Take one named task and do it without being asked twice. Say once that you see it, then stop. Skip the advice, because advice is a task too. The moves are the same whoever they are, a man, a woman, a colleague or a brother. Then watch your own pull to fix, because that pull is yours to work on.
How do I help someone who is burning out?
Burning out is the same state, earlier. The work still gets done, and the cost is starting to show: late nights, short answers, plans dropped. Name what you see once, plainly, without a verdict. "You have been working every evening for a month." That is a record, not an accusation. Then offer one concrete thing, and let them decide what to do with what you said.
How do I help someone who is burnt out from work?
You cannot change their job, and pushing them to quit adds a huge decision to an empty week. Protect the hours outside it instead. Do not ask about work first when you see them. Make plans that end on time. If they talk about the job, listen without fixing. Notice whether the work follows them home, because that part is sometimes a standard and not a schedule.
How do I help someone who is emotionally burnt out?
Ask for less, not more. A person who is emotionally empty may not have words for it, so do not make talking the price of your company. Sit with them. Bring food. Keep plans small. If it moves toward not eating, not sleeping, or not wanting to be here, the box at the top of this page comes first.
What do I do when someone is burned out?
Three things, in this order. Check the signs in the box at the top. Take one named task off their plate this week. Say the true thing once and leave it. What you do not do matters as much: no plans for their recovery, no articles, no pressure to rest on your schedule. Their week is theirs. Your part is smaller than that, and steadier.
How do I help a friend who is burnt out?
Keep the friendship cheap to stay in. Send messages that need no answer. Make invitations that are easy to turn down, and do not keep score when they are. Go to them instead of asking them to come out. Do not take the silence as a ruling on you. A friend running empty is not withdrawing from you. They are withdrawing from demand.
If this is you rather than them
There is a file in this archive about the person whose work is never quite ready to hand over. It is The Perfectionism Trap, the sequence where an unfinished thing cannot be judged, so it stays unfinished. It is written about the reader, not about anybody else.
Did you read this page and recognize the extra pass at night, the bar that moves? Then that file may be yours.
THE FIRST-PERSON FILE
The shape described on this page is filed as The Perfectionism Trap. That file is written in the second person, for whoever is running it, about their own body. It is not a verdict about anybody else, and nobody can read it on someone else's behalf.

How do I help someone who is burnt out?
Take one named task off their plate and do it. Say once that you see it, then stop. Skip the advice, because advice is one more task for a person with none left to give.
What should I not say to someone who is burnt out?
Avoid anything that hands them a job. Let me know if you need anything. You should take a break. Have you tried this. Each one asks them to decide or act. Offer a done thing instead.
Why does rest not help them?
Burnt out names a state, and rest treats the state. If something keeps producing the tiredness, like a standard that never rests, it comes back with them from the vacation.
Is it my fault they are burnt out?
No. You did not set their load or their standard, and you cannot rest on their behalf. What is yours is how you respond, and that part you can change.
Should I tell them to quit their job?
Usually not. A huge decision is the last thing an empty week can hold. Protect the hours outside work instead, and let any decision about the job be theirs, made on a better week.
How do I help a burnt out friend who will not talk?
Do not make talking the price of your company. Sit with them, bring food, take a walk. Send messages that need no reply. Silence from an empty person is not a verdict on you.
Can I make someone take a break?
No, and trying adds pressure. You can make breaks cheaper to take: a plan that ends on time, a meal that is already cooked, an evening with nothing to decide.
When is burnout something more serious?
If they stop eating, cannot sleep for many nights, or talk about not wanting to be here, act today. The box at the top of this page lists who to call, and you can call about somebody else. Any question about what is going on inside them belongs with their doctor.
Why do I feel so frustrated with them?
Because nothing you offer seems to land, and that is hard to watch. The frustration has a body signal, often a tight chest or a pull to fix. Notice it. That is where your own different action starts.
How do I help someone who keeps working while burnt out?
Do not argue with the work. Protect what is outside it: meals, sleep, a quiet evening. If the work follows them home every night, that may be a standard rather than a schedule, and it is theirs to look at.
How do I look after myself while helping someone burnt out?
Set your own limit on a calm day, before you need it. Decide what you can give each week and give that. You can help a tired person without becoming the next one.
