Why is my brother so mean to me?
If your brother or sister hurts you, or you are afraid at home, read the box below first.
WRITTEN FOR THE PERSON STANDING NEXT TO IT
Your brother says it, and you shrink. A joke at your expense. A shove in the hall. A mean name when no adult is listening.
Read this page for your side of that. It will not tell you what your brother is. That would be a verdict about someone who never opened a file here.
It answers your question in each of the ways you typed it, for brothers and for sisters. It starts with the part that keeps you safe.
Before anything else
This goes first. Fights happen between brothers and sisters. Being hurt, or being afraid in your own home, is something else.
If a brother or sister hits you, threatens you, touches you in a way that is not okay, or makes you afraid to be home, this is not the right page. Tell an adult you trust today. If you are young, you can call about your own home yourself.
In the United States:
Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline. Call or text 1-800-422-4453, staffed around the clock. It is used by parents ringing about themselves, and you can ring for advice without making an allegation.
988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.
Crisis Text Line. Text HOME to 741741, if a call is the part you cannot do.
Emergency services: 911.
A pattern explains a shape. It never excuses harm, and being family does not make it okay.
What you are actually seeing
The meanness is aimed. Put-downs, eye rolls, names, making fun of you in front of friends. At home it can be loud. Out in the world they can seem fine.
So you have learned to watch them. You time when you walk into the kitchen. You keep things to yourself so they cannot be used.
What the meanness may be about
From the outside, meanness between siblings is often about position, not about you. Who gets attention. Who gets blamed. Who gets compared. A sibling who feels small somewhere can take it out where it feels allowed.
It can also be heat from somewhere else: school, friends, a hard week. You are the nearest person who will still be there tomorrow. This page will not guess which.
Mean to you is not a ruling on you. It is a record of where the heat goes.
What this is not about
It is not about you being annoying, weird, too sensitive or not enough. Those are verdicts, and this page does not give them. And it is not yours to fix. You cannot make a brother kind by being perfect.
What happens in your body
Notice what happens in you when they walk in. A tight stomach. A hot face. A comeback ready before they speak.
[MECHANISM]
That tight stomach is a body signal, the first physical sign that your own pattern is starting. It comes a few seconds before you act.
What follows is your usual response. Firing back. Crying. Going silent. Hiding in your room.
Each one ends the moment. None of them changes the next one.
What is in your control
Not giving it fuel is yours. Firing back turns the meanness into a game. Say one flat word, "Okay" or "Stop," and walk away.
Telling an adult is yours. Not as tattling. As a record. A parent, a teacher, an aunt. Say exactly what was said or done, and when.
One place that is yours is yours: a room, a friend's house, a club after school. And one thing is not yours: whether they change. That is their work.
What it is costing you
Check what has changed. Whether you expect people to be mean before they are. Whether you laugh at jokes about yourself so they hurt less. Whether you have stopped telling anyone at home anything.
Why is my brother so mean to me?
From the outside, it is often about position or heat from somewhere else, not about who you are. Who gets attention, who gets compared, a bad week at school. You were nearest. That is not a ruling on you. Say one flat word, walk away, and tell an adult what was said.
Why is my brother so mean to me for no reason?
When you cannot see a reason, the reason is often inside him. A hard day, a friend who dropped him, a fear he will not say. You were simply the closest. That does not make it fair. It means being more careful would not have stopped it.
Why is my brother mean to me but nice to everyone else?
Being the only one he is mean to is the part that hurts. It can mean you are where it feels safe to let the heat out, or where an old rivalry still runs. Neither is your fault. Notice when it happens and who is in the room. A short note can show you the shape.
Why is my older brother so mean to me?
An older brother has more size, more words and more years. That can make the meanness feel like a judge's ruling. It is not. It may be about being compared, being handed chores, or feeling replaced. Do not fight on his terms. Say "Stop," leave, and tell an adult if it keeps going.
Why is my little brother so mean to me?
A younger brother may be mean because it gets your attention fast, or because he copies what he sees. It can feel smaller than being picked on by an older one. It still counts. Keep your voice level, do not hit back, and tell a parent exactly what he did.
Why is my sister so mean to me?
The shape is the same with a sister. Put-downs, mean names, the cold shoulder. It may be about position, comparison or a hard week. It is not a ruling on you, and no test can tell you what she is. What you can do is the same: one flat word, walk away, tell an adult.
Why is my older sister so mean to me?
An older sister can carry more say in the house and more words to aim. Her meanness may be about being put in charge of you, being compared, or her own world outside. None of that is yours to carry. Say one flat sentence, step away, and tell an adult you trust.
Why is my little sister so mean to me?
A younger sister may push to get a reaction, or copy what she sees. Her size does not make it nothing. Keep your own voice level. Do not get even, because it turns the meanness into a game. Tell a parent what happened, in plain words.
What should I do if my brother is mean to me?
In the moment: one flat word, then walk away. Do not fire back. Later: tell an adult exactly what was said or done, and the day it happened. Find one place that is yours. If he ever hurts you or you feel afraid, read the box at the top first.
Why does my brother always yell at me?
Yelling is heat with volume. If your brother yells over small things, the size is the clue. A reaction far bigger than the event started inside him, not with you. Do not yell back. Leave the room, and tell an adult if it happens a lot.
Why is my brother always angry at me?
Anger aimed at you again and again may carry an old score: something about fairness, attention or blame at home. It may be heat from somewhere else. Either way, you did not cause the size of it. Ask once, on a calm day: "What is going on with us?" Then listen.
Why is my brother always angry?
If he is angry at games, at homework, at the dog, at whoever is near, the anger was never about you. It is the way his heat comes out, and it can make home feel loud. You cannot calm it for him. If a little brother is angry all the time, tell a parent what you see.
Why does my brother always make fun of me?
Making fun of you aims at who you are. Laughing along can make it hurt less for a moment, and it teaches him it is fine. You do not have to laugh. Say "Not funny," and leave. If it happens in front of friends or online, tell an adult.
If this is you rather than them
Some people read this page about a brother or sister and recognize the heat from the inside. The Rage Pattern is the file where anger arrives far bigger than the thing that set it off.
Do you snap at your own brother or sister and feel bad about it after? Then that file may be yours. It is the one pattern here you can work on directly.
THE FIRST-PERSON FILE
The shape described on this page is filed as The Rage Pattern. That file is written in the second person, for whoever is running it, about their own body. It is not a verdict about anybody else, and nobody can read it on someone else's behalf.
If this is you rather than them: Why do I get so angry over small things?Questions people ask about this
Is it my fault my brother is mean to me?
No. Meanness says where the heat goes, not what you are worth. Being more careful would not have stopped it.
Should I be mean back to my brother?
Firing back turns it into a game, and the game usually grows. One flat word and walking away is the move that is yours.
Who should I tell if my brother is mean to me?
An adult you trust: a parent, a teacher, an aunt, a coach. Say exactly what was said or done, and when.
What if my brother hits me?
Then this is not the right page. Tell an adult today. The box at the top lists people you can call or text in the United States, including Childhelp.
Why do I cry when my brother is mean to me?
Tears are what a body does when something is too much. They are not weakness. Go somewhere quiet, and tell an adult later.
Is it normal for siblings to be mean?
This page does not measure normal. Some fighting happens in many houses. Meanness that makes you afraid, or never stops, is worth telling an adult about.
Why is my brother nice in front of other people?
Heat often comes out where it feels allowed, and that can be at home, with you. It does not make the meanness your fault.
Will my brother ever be nice to me?
No page can say, and anybody who does is guessing. That is his work. What changes from your side is whether you give the meanness a game.
What if my parents do not believe me?
Tell another adult: a teacher, a relative, a friend's parent. If you are afraid at home, the box at the top lists people who will listen.
Why am I mean to my little brother?
Heat that lands on you can come out of you onto someone smaller. If that sounds like you, the file in the last section is written about you.
THE ARCHIVES
You cannot open their file. You can open yours. The assessment names the pattern that has been running in you while you watched the hallway, and it costs nothing.
