What do I say to my estranged mother?
If you left because of harm, or tonight is a hard night, read the box below before you write anything.
WRITTEN FOR THE PERSON STANDING NEXT TO IT
You have been thinking about a letter. Not every day, but on the days it matters, and lately more of them. You do not know what the message is for yet, which is why it is still unwritten.
This page will not tell you what your mother is, and it will not tell you to write. Nobody here has met either of you. It will tell you how to decide what a message is for, and what your own side of it is. Read the first box before anything else.
Before anything else
One thing outranks the rest of this page. If you left because of harm, and the reason still stands, nothing below is written to argue you back. A door closed for a reason is not a pattern to be interrupted.
If being in contact with her is itself a danger to you, that is a question for a person, not an article.
And if the thinking about it has brought you to a hard night, a birthday, a holiday, a hospital call, that comes before the message too.
In the United States:
988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.
Crisis Text Line. Text HOME to 741741, if a call is the part you cannot do.
You can call about yourself. You do not have to be in the worst version of a night to do it.
If that box is not yours, keep going. What follows assumes you are safe and that the reason, whatever it was, is yours to weigh.
What you are actually seeing
Look at who closed the door, and when. Some breaks were yours, and had a reason. Some were hers, declared or not. And some were nobody's: a thinning after a visit that went well, a call that was never returned, a silence that became a fact.
The last shape has timing, and it is the one this archive knows something about. The pull back lands after closeness rather than after a fight. If that is what you can see, it changes what a message is for.
If the break was yours and the reason still stands, the reason is the shape. The first box is written for you.
Why would a mother go distant when things were good?
This page cannot say what is inside her. It can say what the third shape looks like from outside, and it looks like a body making distance before a choice is made.
For some people, closeness to a grown child reads as exposure. Being seen clearly by the person they raised is more than they can hold, and the distance arrives on its own. Then the sentence that would end it gets heavier every year it waits. The silence starts to cost less than breaking it, so it pays for itself.
That is a mechanism, not a character, and it is only one of the things an estrangement can be. It is not the one with harm in it.
You keep asking what you did. The silence keeps answering a question you did not ask.
What this is not about
It is not about the perfect sentence. There is no message that opens a door somebody closed from the inside, and a message written to be perfect reads as a case.
It is not a test you have to pass, in either direction. You do not owe a message, and a message does not owe you a reply.
And if the distance is hers, it is not yours to end. The pull away starts a few seconds before she chooses it, in a body you are not in. No message reaches those seconds.
What happens in your body
Watch what happens in you when you imagine her name on the screen. A tight chest. A pull to write the whole account, every year of it. A drop in the stomach that says do not, and a second one that says you must.
[MECHANISM]
That tightening is the body signal, the first thing you feel as your own pattern starts. It arrives a few seconds before you act.
What follows is your usual response. The long draft. The draft with the case in it. The draft that apologizes for leaving. The draft you delete.
Each of those is a move in a sequence you can watch. Hers runs in her body. This one runs in yours.
What is in your control
Decide what the message is for before you decide what it says. Write the purpose down in one line. To let her know I am alive. To ask one question. To say one thing I need said before it is too late. A message with no purpose becomes the account of the years, and that is not a message.
Then write under a hundred words to that purpose and nothing else. I have been thinking of you. I am not writing to reopen anything. I wanted you to know I am well. That is a whole message.
Leave the case out, in both directions. Do not explain why you left, and do not apologize for it unless you mean to. Do not list what she did. A message that has to be answered gets left unopened, and a message that reopens the case gets answered with the case.
Send it once, or do not send it. Both are complete. Do not send the follow-up. Then keep the week you had planned, because a week spent watching the phone is a week the pattern gets.
What it is costing you
Check what has changed in you. Whether you rehearse the message when you cannot sleep. Whether a slow reply from anybody now reads as the start of this. Whether you have gone quieter with the people who do stay, so there is less to lose.
Each of those is a pattern with its own file. The rehearsed case in particular has a body signal you can catch: the tight chest, a few seconds before you open the draft again.
That is the part with a door in it. The person who stops running their own pattern changes what the next message is like, whoever it goes to.
What do I say to my estranged mother?
Say the one thing the message is for, and leave the years out. I have been thinking of you. I am not writing to reopen anything. I wanted you to know I am well, and I hope you are. If there is one question you need answered, ask it plainly and alone. Do not apologize for leaving unless you mean it, and do not list what happened. If you left because of harm and the reason still stands, the message you are looking for may be the one you do not send, and that is a complete answer.
If this is you rather than them
Some people read this page for a mother and recognize the pull from the other side. The relief of the first quiet month. The reply that got heavier every year it waited, until it was easier not to write at all.
If that just happened, the first-person file is The Disappearing Pattern, the pull to make distance when someone gets close. It is written for you, about your own body, not anybody else's.
THE FIRST-PERSON FILE
The shape described on this page is filed as The Disappearing Pattern. That file is written in the second person, for whoever is running it, about their own body. It is not a verdict about anybody else, and nobody can read it on someone else's behalf.
If this is you rather than them: Why do I push people away when they get close?Questions people ask about this
Should I contact my estranged mother at all?
That is yours to decide and this page will not decide it. If you left because of harm and the reason still stands, not writing is a complete answer. If you want to write, decide what the message is for before you decide what it says.
What should I not say to my estranged mother?
Do not send the account of the years. Do not explain why you left unless she asked and you want to answer. Do not apologize for leaving unless you mean it. Each of those reopens the case, and a case gets answered with a case.
How do I start a message to my estranged mother?
With the purpose. I have been thinking of you, and I wanted you to know I am well. That is a start and it can also be the whole thing. Under a hundred words, one purpose, no follow-up.
What if she never replies?
Then the message was still yours, and sending it once was complete. Do not send a second asking whether it arrived. Keep the week you had planned rather than the one that watches the phone.
What if my mother replies with the old argument?
Decide nothing in the first hour. You wrote for one purpose, and the reply does not change the purpose. You can answer once, plainly, or not at all. Both are complete.
Why did my mother go distant after we got close?
This page cannot say what is inside her. What can be seen from outside is a shape: a pull back that lands after closeness rather than after a fight. That is a mechanism, not a verdict about who she is.
Did I cause the estrangement from my mother?
If you closed the door for a reason, you know the reason and it is yours to weigh. If she closed it after a good stretch, that shape starts a few seconds before she chose it, in a body you are not in. Neither is a verdict about you.
Should I reach out on her birthday or a holiday?
If you write at all, those are the days a short message can arrive without reopening anything. Thinking of you today. Hope you are well. Send it in the morning and keep the day for yourself.
What do I say if my estranged mother is ill?
Say the one thing you would need to have said. I heard you are unwell. I am thinking of you. That can stand alone. Whether you visit is a separate decision, and the first box on this page comes before it.
Why do I keep writing the message and deleting it?
Because every draft is trying to be the one that settles it, and no sentence does that. The tight chest as you open the draft is the body signal, the thing you feel as your own pattern starts. Write the purpose down first, then the short one.
THE ARCHIVES
You cannot open her file. You can open yours. The assessment names the pattern that has been running in you through the drafts, and it costs nothing.
