Why did my coworker stop talking to me?

Say one plain thing to them this week, or nothing. Then read what is in your control before you do anything else about it.

WRITTEN FOR THE PERSON STANDING NEXT TO IT

The chat stopped and nothing else did. You still share a corridor, a meeting, a kitchen. They are civil, and the thing that used to be there is gone, and you cannot find the day it went.

This page will not tell you what your coworker is. Nobody here has met them. It will tell you how to read a silence at work without writing a verdict, and what your own side of it is. Say one plain thing this week or nothing, and read the control section before you do anything else.

    What you are actually seeing

Look at the shape before the reason. Three things look like a coworker going quiet, and from your desk they match.

The first is a load that got heavier. Something at home, a deadline, a review. The quiet is everywhere, not aimed, and you only notice it because you were closer than most.

The second is something you said or did, or something they were told you said. That one has a reason, and the reason is the shape. The third has timing: the quiet arrived after the two of you got closer, after the lunch where something real was said, after you became the person they told things to.

One kind of quiet is not a pattern question. If being frozen out is aimed at who you are rather than what you did, or it has spread from one person to a room, it is an employment question first.

Find out your route before you need it: a named person above them, human resources, a union representative.

Nothing further down this page is a reason to carry a workplace that is doing you harm on your own.

Why would a coworker go quiet after we got closer?

This page cannot say what is inside them. It can say what the third shape looks like from outside, and it looks like a body making distance before a choice is made.

For some people, being known at work reads as exposure. They told you something real, and the next morning that felt like more than they could hold in a building they have to come back to. The distance arrives on its own. Then the sentence that would explain it gets heavier every day, and at work there is never a good minute to say it, so the quiet pays for itself.

That is a mechanism, not a character. It says nothing about whether they liked you. Often it says they did.

You keep asking what you did. The quiet keeps answering a question you did not ask.

    What this is not about

It is not about the joke in the meeting. If the quiet is far bigger than anything you can find, it is not an answer to the thing you found.

It is not a test you can pass by being more useful. There is no favor that opens a door somebody closed from the inside.

And it is not yours to end. The pull away starts a few seconds before they choose it, in a body you are not in. No message in the shared channel reaches those seconds.

    What happens in your body

Watch what happens in you when they walk into the kitchen. A tight chest. A pull to say something bright, anything, to test the air. A flush of heat at being the one who always speaks first.

    [MECHANISM]

That tightening is the body signal, the first thing you feel as your own pattern starts. It arrives a few seconds before you act.

What follows is your usual response. The over-bright hello. The extra favor. The question asked through a third colleague. Going quiet back.

Each of those is a move in a sequence you can watch. Theirs runs in their body. This one runs in yours.

    What is in your control

Say one plain thing, once, somewhere private. I noticed things have gone quiet between us. If I did something, I would like to know. Either way, no pressure. Then leave it.

Do not run a campaign. The extra favors, the bright hellos, the question routed through somebody else. Each is pressure, and pressure feeds a pull away. At work it also gets noticed by the room.

Do not match the quiet. Going cold back turns a withdrawal into a standoff, and you both still have to sit in the same meeting.

Keep working as you did. Be civil, be ordinary, and let the thing be ordinary too. A workplace can hold a quiet that a friendship cannot, and that is a relief rather than a loss.

    What it is costing you

Check what has changed in you. Whether you now rehearse the kitchen before you walk into it. Whether you read their face before you speak in meetings. Whether you have gone quieter with the next colleague, so there is less to lose.

Each of those is a pattern with its own file. The over-bright hello in particular has a body signal you can catch: the tight chest, a few seconds before you speak.

That is the part with a door in it. The person who stops running their own pattern changes what the room is like.

Why did my coworker stop talking to me?

This page cannot answer that about a person it has not met. What it can do is give you the sort: a load that got heavier, a reason you have not been told, or a pull away that arrived after the two of you got closer. Read the timing. If the quiet followed the week you became the person they talked to, it is likely the third. Then say one plain thing, once, and keep working as you did.

Why did my coworker stop talking to everyone?

A quiet that went everywhere at once is not aimed at you, and that is the useful fact in it. Something in their life got heavier, or the building did. Do not read it as the first shape on this page. Say one ordinary thing when you pass them, and ask nothing. If their quiet comes with other things that worry you, not eating, not sleeping, saying they cannot go on, that is a question for a person, and the number at the top of this page is callable about somebody else.

    Why do coworkers avoid me?

That question turns the lens around, and this page will not hand you a verdict in either direction. Look at the shape first. One person going quiet is a sort you can run. A whole room going quiet is a different question, and if it is aimed at who you are, the box above is yours. If it is neither, the honest move is to look at your own sequence: the over-bright hello, the favor nobody asked for, the going cold first. Those have a file, and the file is yours to open.

If this is you rather than them

Some people read this page for a coworker and recognize the pull from the other side. The lunch where you said too much. The next morning, when the kitchen felt like exposure.

If that just happened, the first-person file is The Disappearing Pattern, the pull to make distance when someone gets close. It is written for you, about your own body, not anybody else's.

    THE FIRST-PERSON FILE

The shape described on this page is filed as The Disappearing Pattern. That file is written in the second person, for whoever is running it, about their own body. It is not a verdict about anybody else, and nobody can read it on someone else's behalf.

If this is you rather than them: Why do I push people away when they get close?

    Questions people ask about this

Why would a coworker suddenly stop talking to me?

This page cannot say what is inside them. What can be seen from outside is a shape: a load that got heavier, a reason not yet said, or a pull away that arrived after the two of you got closer. The sort at the top of the page tells them apart.

Should I ask my coworker why they stopped talking to me?

Once, plainly, somewhere private. If I did something I would like to know, and either way no pressure. Then leave it. A second asking is a campaign, and a campaign gets noticed by the room.

Did I do something to upset my coworker?

You have looked and not found it. If the quiet is far bigger than anything you found, it is not an answer to that. If you think you did find it, say so once and ask once.

How should I act around a coworker who is ignoring me?

Ordinary. Civil, plain, and the same as before. Do not go cold back, and do not go bright. A workplace can hold a quiet that a friendship cannot, and that is a relief rather than a loss.

Should I tell my manager that a coworker is ignoring me?

If it is one person and the work is getting done, it is not yet a manager's question. If it has spread to a room, or it is aimed at who you are, find your route before you need it. The box on this page names one.

Why did my coworker go quiet after we became friends?

For some people, being known at work reads as exposure, and the body makes distance before a choice is made. That timing is the mark of the third shape on this page. It is a mechanism, not a verdict about who they are.

Should I stop being friendly to a coworker who ignores me?

No. Going cold back turns a withdrawal into a standoff, and you both still have to sit in the same meeting. Stay plain and let the thing be ordinary.

Why do I feel so tense around them now?

Because you are running continuous monitoring beside the actual job. The tight chest when they walk in is the body signal, the thing you feel as your own pattern starts. That is the place a different action can be chosen.

Can a coworker who froze me out come back around?

The mechanism is interruptible, and the interruption happens in one body, theirs. This page makes no forecast about anyone. What is in reach is your own response in the shared room.

What if the whole office seems to avoid me?

That is a different question from one person going quiet, and this page will not give a verdict on it. If it is aimed at who you are, the box above is yours. If it is not, the file worth opening is your own.
