Is it me or is it them?
CROSS-REFERENCE: THREE FILES
Both answers are available and neither helps. You have argued yourself into each of them, probably in the same week, and the argument was persuasive both times, which should tell you something about the question rather than about the relationship.
The archive is not going to adjudicate it. Not out of caution. Because the side is not the part of this you can act on, and picking one for you would be the least useful thing on offer here.
Why can't I work out whose fault it is?
Because you are inside it, and from inside a situation the only data available is your own experience of it plus their account of theirs. Neither of those is neutral and both of them are sincere, which is exactly the condition under which two people can be certain of opposite things for years.
It also does not resolve because you keep asking it during the event. A question asked while the heart is going gets answered by the thing that made the heart go.
The search arrives in a few shapes and they are all asking for a ruling:
- “is it me or is it them”
- “am I the problem or are they toxic”
- “is this a trauma response or is he actually like that”
- “how do I know if I am overreacting”
Read the third one closely, because it contains the whole difficulty in one sentence. Those two things are not alternatives. A response can be automatic and disproportionate, and the thing it fired at can also have genuinely happened.
What test actually works from inside?
Repeatability, and it is aimed at you rather than at them, for the plain reason that you are the only one of the two whose sequence you have access to.
[PATTERN SNAPSHOT]
Take the same reaction and place it in three settings: this person, a job, a friendship.
Same physical event first, in the same place in your body.
Same behavior after it, on roughly the same delay.
If it repeats in all three, the setting is not what is producing it.
That result does not clear them and it is not designed to. It tells you which part of this is yours to reach, which is the only usable answer the question has.
What if they really are treating me badly?
Then they are, and nothing on this page converts that into your responsibility. Two things run at once far more often than either person involved can see, and a sequence of your own does not retroactively make somebody else's behavior acceptable.
Keep the two records separately. What they did, with dates. What fires in you, with markers. Mixing those two into one ledger is what makes this question unanswerable, and separating them is most of the work.
One thing here outranks everything else on the page. If you are frightened of the person you are asking this about, this stops being a question about patterns.
In the United States: The National Domestic Violence Hotline, call 1-800-799-7233 or text START to 88788. 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, call or text 988. Emergency services: 911.
You do not need to have decided anything to call those numbers, and you do not need to be certain. That is what they are for.
How do I know if I am overreacting?
Size is the wrong measure and it is the one everybody reaches for. The useful measure is proportion to the event versus consistency across events. A response that scales with what happened is a response. A response that arrives at the same size regardless is a reading of something older.
So the honest answer to are you overreacting is often yes and also that the word overreacting is doing no work. It describes the size and says nothing about the cause, and the cause is where the handle is.
You are not making a decision when it fires. You are not making a decision at all.
Which pattern would mine be?
Three files produce this question more than the rest, and they separate on what you have been doing rather than on what they have been doing. Running checks and reading the results as facts. Being pulled hardest when you knew least. Or reasoning your way to the same answer about staying no matter what the month contained.
None of the three says anything about whether the other person is good for you. That remains yours to decide, with better information than you have now, once you can tell which half of the noise is coming from your side.
THE FILES THIS POINTS AT
Read for the body marker rather than for the description. Recognition in this work arrives as a flinch rather than as agreement. All of them are free to read in full.
- The Testing Pattern
If you have been running checks and reading the results as facts about them.
Why do I test people who love me?
- Attraction to Harm
If the pull toward this person was strongest when you knew the least.
Why am I attracted to people who hurt me?
- The Draining Bond
If the reasoning for staying arrives at the same answer whatever the month contained.
Why can't I leave a relationship that is draining me?
Questions people ask about this
Is it me or is it them?
Usually both, and the proportions are not knowable from inside. What is knowable is which half is reachable: one sequence, in one body, and it is yours. That is not a way of excusing anybody. It is simply where the only handle is.
How do I tell my pattern from their behavior?
Keep two records rather than one. What they did, with dates. What fires in you, with body markers and timings. The question becomes answerable the moment those stop being mixed into a single ledger.
How do I know if I am overreacting?
Check consistency rather than size. A response proportional to the event is a response. A response that arrives at the same size regardless of what happened is a reading of something older, and the word overreacting describes the size while explaining nothing about the cause.
Is this a trauma response or are they actually like that?
Those are not alternatives, which is why the question never resolves. A reaction can be automatic and out of proportion, and the thing it fired at can also have genuinely happened. Both records can be accurate at once.
Why do we both think the other one started it?
Because each of you has full access to your own experience and only their account of theirs. Two people running two different programs at each other will each be correct about the other and blind about themselves, sincerely, for years.
Should I ask my friends what they think?
They will answer from your account of it, which is the one piece of evidence already known to be partial. Friends are worth having and they are not an instrument for this. The instrument is whether the sequence repeats in settings that have nothing to do with this person.
What if a pattern of mine is being used against me?
That happens, and it is worth naming plainly: an accurate description of your sequence can be deployed as a way of dismissing everything you raise. A mechanism running in you never makes your observations inadmissible.
Does having a pattern mean it is my fault?
No. Installation was not your doing and the damage is still yours to account for, and those two sit alongside each other. A pattern is an explanation rather than a permission, and it is not an admission of guilt either.
How do I stop the arguments going in circles?
Catch your own physical event before the sentence rather than trying to win the exchange. The circling is two sequences meeting, and only one end of it is inside a body you occupy.
Should I leave?
Nobody outside your life gets to answer that and anybody who offers to, on the evidence of a search, is guessing. What this archive can offer is better information about which half of the noise is yours, which is worth having before a decision that size.
What if I am frightened of them?
Then this stops being a question about patterns and the numbers in the safety block above are the right next step. You do not need to have decided anything or be certain of anything to use them.
Which pattern is most likely mine?
Three produce this question most often and they separate on your own behavior rather than theirs: running checks and treating the results as facts, being pulled hardest when you knew least, or reasoning to the same conclusion about staying whatever the month contained.
THE ARCHIVES
