Is gifted kid burnout real?
Read on. The file this belongs to is named below, with the words to say when it starts.
CROSS-REFERENCE: ONE FILE
Yes, and the word burnout arrives late. It names the tiredness you have now. It does not name the thing that was running for fifteen years before the tiredness showed up, and that thing is still running.
Read this for the part with a time on it. Not the praise, not the lost years, not whether you were ever really gifted. The few seconds before a piece of work that is nearly done gets reopened instead of handed in.
What the label gets right
That the bar was set by a child. Somewhere around eight, being right came easily and was noticed. The noticing felt like warmth. A standard was set in that warmth, by a person who did not know that work gets harder, and you have been held to it ever since by nobody but yourself.
It is right about the crash, too. The first time the work was genuinely hard, there was no practice at being bad at something, and no evidence that being bad at something was survivable. A lot of people describe the same year. It is usually the second year of something, and it is usually described as the year the floor went.
And it is right that this is not laziness. That word is yours, said about yourself at two in the morning, and this page is not going to agree with it. Lazy people do not lie awake over an assignment they have not opened. They are asleep.
Where it stops
At the tiredness. The label describes a state, and a state has no cue, nothing that sets it off, and no timing. There is nowhere in burnout to put your hand. You cannot catch a state. You can only wait for it to lift, and it has not lifted.
It also looks backward. Nearly everything written under this heading is about what was done to the child: the praise, the skipped grade, the way effort was never required so effort was never learned. All of that may be true, and all of it is finished. The child is not the one who will not open the file on Thursday. You are.
Here is the clue the label cannot explain. The tiredness is not even across the week. There are tasks you do without a flicker, and there is one kind of task that drains you before you have touched it. The kind that could be judged. The kind where being wrong would be visible. That is not a battery running down. That is a sequence firing on a specific cue.
What is happening in the few seconds
The jaw goes first. For a lot of people it tightens, and the shoulders follow, and the breath goes shallow, in the moment the nearly finished thing comes into view. That tightening is the body signal: what you feel in the body as the pattern starts, before any thought about the work has formed.
[MECHANISM]
The jaw is the first domino. It arrives three to seven seconds before the file is reopened or left closed.
The thought that follows, it is not ready, I will do it properly tomorrow, I should not have left it so late, is not the cause. It is the narration.
The relief comes when the thing is not handed in. An unfinished thing cannot be judged. That relief is what keeps the sequence running, not the praise you got at eight.
This is the sequence the archive files as The Perfectionism Trap: in you the bar was set early and the first real judgment arrived late. That is why the file is nearly done so often and handed in so rarely. The tiredness is real. It is the cost of running this several times a day, not the cause of it.
Is it burnout or am I just lazy?
Neither word has a moment in it, which is why the question has kept you up without ever getting answered. Burnout is a state. Lazy is a verdict. Both describe the week from the outside, and neither tells you what to do at the jaw.
Run one test instead. Open the thing you have been avoiding, and stop at the first physical change. Do not work on it. Just notice what the jaw does, what the shoulders do, where the breath goes. If something tightens before you have read a word, you have found the cue, and a cue is something a verdict never had.
Where the standard was learned is a separate question. The label has probably already told you the answer, and it may be right. It is also optional. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer. The sequence runs the same either way, and it is caught the same way.
How the sequence is interrupted
At the jaw, not at the childhood. The childhood is a conversation for a calm afternoon. The jaw is a moment, and it is the only part of this with a time on it. Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
Out loud, quietly, when the jaw sets:
Jaw is tight. This is exposure, not quality. I am sending it inside two minutes.
Then send it as it is. Not after one more read. The extra read is the pattern, and it will feel like quality control while you are doing it.
Sending something that could be wrong is the whole rewrite. It is the thing the eight-year-old never practiced, and it is the only thing that teaches the body that being judged is survivable. Each repetition is what makes the different action easier to reach the next time.
Catch: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Intercept: interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. Rewrite: repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. Three moves, in that order, at the jaw.

Why can't I finish anything?
Questions people ask about this
Is gifted kid burnout real?
The tiredness is real and the label is right that the bar was set by a child. What it does not name is the moment: the jaw setting a few seconds before nearly finished work gets reopened instead of handed in. That moment is the part with a handle on it.
Is it burnout or am I just lazy?
Neither word has a moment in it. Burnout is a state and lazy is a verdict. Open the avoided thing and stop at the first physical change. If something tightens before you have read a word, that is a cue, and a cue is something a verdict never had.
What are the effects of gifted kid burnout?
The ones you came here knowing: the unfinished drafts, the late nights over unopened files, the sense that the person who found things easy is gone. The effect the label misses is that the sequence producing all of that is still running, several times a day, and can be caught.
How do I recover from gifted kid burnout?
Not by resting until the standard lowers itself, which has been tried. By catching the jaw and sending the work inside two minutes, as it is, and doing that again the next time. Rest is still good. It is not the mechanism.
Was I ever really gifted?
This page has no view and does not need one. Whether the praise at eight was accurate changes nothing about the jaw on Thursday. The sequence runs on the standard, not on whether the standard was deserved.
What is the body signal before I avoid finishing?
The jaw tightening for a lot of readers, with the shoulders and the breath following, in the moment the nearly finished thing comes into view. It arrives three to seven seconds before the file is reopened or left closed.
Why can I do some tasks easily and not others?
Because the cue is specific. Tasks that cannot be judged get done without a flicker. Tasks where being wrong would be visible get the jaw and the delay. That unevenness is the clearest sign this is a sequence and not a battery.
Is gifted kid burnout the same as imposter syndrome?
They overlap and arrive at different ages. Imposter syndrome is the adult work frame for a feeling of fraud. This label carries the childhood praise inside it. Where both describe the jaw before the unfinished submission, they are the same sequence, and there is a separate bridge page for the other label.
Why did it all fall apart in my second year?
Because that is usually when the work got hard for the first time, with no practice at being bad at something. The floor did not go. A sequence started, and it has fired on every judgeable task since.
Where do I read the full file?
It is linked from this page and it is free in full, written in the second person and about your own body. Nothing in it is gated and there is nothing to buy in order to read it.
