Is it okay not to talk to my boyfriend after a fight?

Read on. The file this belongs to is named below, with the words to say when it starts.

    PATTERN: The Disappearing Pattern

You do not want to talk yet. The fight is still in your chest and every word feels like it would start it again. So you go quiet, and then you wonder if the quiet is its own problem. Say how long you need before you decide whether it is okay.

Okay is a ruling. A pause and a disappearance look the same for the first hour. After that they come apart.

    Before anything else

If you are not talking to him because you are afraid of what he will say or do, that comes first. This page is about choosing a pause. It is not about staying safe, and it is not the place for that.

If you are afraid of your partner, start here instead.

    In the United States:

988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.

The National Domestic Violence Hotline. Call 1-800-799-7233 or text START to 88788. Confidential, around the clock, and they talk about safety planning as well as leaving.

    Emergency services: 911.

Calling does not commit you to anything. It is a conversation.

This page will still be here afterward.

What okay does and does not tell you

Okay would tell you that you are allowed. You already are. Needing time after a fight is ordinary, and nobody is owed an instant reply.

What okay cannot tell you is whether this pause will end. A pause has an end you can name. A disappearance does not. From the inside, on the first night, they feel exactly the same.

Why okay is the wrong question here

Because the answer depends on something the question leaves out: whether he knows you are coming back. Quiet with a time on it is a pause. Quiet with no word on it leaves him guessing, and guessing is hard on both of you.

So a better question is simple. Have you told him how long?

What the quiet is actually doing

The Disappearing Pattern is the name for one version of this: going quiet on someone you want, and letting the quiet stretch until coming back feels harder than staying gone. It often fires when things are close, and a fight is a very close moment.

Under that pattern, the quiet is not a plan to talk later. It is relief from the closeness. Each hour without a word makes the first word harder, so the quiet keeps itself going.

    [MECHANISM]

The order is cue, body, thought, window, behavior, relief.

The cue, the first thing that sets it off, is often his message after the fight, or the sound of him in the next room.

The body signal, what you feel as the pattern starts, is a band around the chest and an urge to turn away.

The window, the few seconds before the behavior, is about three to seven seconds. It is a working figure, not a measured one.

Then you leave it unanswered. Then relief. That relief keeps the circuit, the whole sequence, running.

Is it okay not to talk to my boyfriend after a fight?

Yes, for a while, if you say so. A pause with a time on it is fair to you both. Send one line: I need tonight, and I will talk tomorrow after work. Then keep it. Silence with no word on it is different. It hands him the job of guessing, and it makes your own return harder each hour.

Is this a pause, or is this a pattern running?

A pause ends when you said it would. You come back and finish the conversation, even if it is hard.

A pattern does not end on a schedule. You mean to talk tomorrow, then tomorrow passes, then it feels too late to bring it up at all. If that has happened after more than one fight, you are looking at a sequence rather than a need for time.

    [FIELD ASSIGNMENT]

Tonight, write one line to him with a time in it, and send it.

Write down when you said you would talk.

When that time comes, notice whether your chest tightens before you reach for the conversation.

If the tightness comes and the time slips past, the file below has the whole sequence and what to do in the window.

Why do I push people away when they get close?

    Questions people ask about this

Is it okay not to talk to my boyfriend after a fight?

Yes, for a while, if he knows you are coming back. A pause with a time on it is fair. Silence with no word on it leaves him guessing and makes your return harder.

How long is too long to not talk after a fight?

There is no fixed number. The test is whether you named an end and kept it. A day you announced is a pause. Three days with no word is something else.

Is not talking after a fight the silent treatment?

It can become that. The difference is the message. A pause says I need time and I will be back. The silent treatment says nothing and lets the quiet do the talking.

What do I say if I need time after a fight?

One short line with a time in it. I need tonight. I will talk tomorrow after work. Then keep it. No need to explain more than that.

Why can't I talk to him after we fight?

Often because the fight is still in your body. A band around the chest, a tight throat. Words feel dangerous until that settles. A stated pause gives it time to settle without leaving him guessing.

Why does coming back after a fight feel so hard?

Because each hour of quiet makes the first word heavier. The relief of not talking keeps the quiet going. A time you named in advance gives you a reason to come back.

Should I wait for him to text first?

That is yours to decide. Waiting can turn into a contest about who speaks first. If you said you would talk at a time, the time decides, not the contest.

    What is the body signal?

Often a band around the chest and an urge to turn away from the phone or the room. It comes a few seconds before you decide not to answer.

What if I am afraid to talk to him?

Then the support routes at the top of this page come first. A pause from someone you are afraid of is not a pattern to work on. It is a situation to get help with.

Do I need to know why I shut down?

No. Pattern Archaeology, asking where a pattern was learned, is optional work between moments. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer. The work happens in the window.

The window is the gap between the first signal in your body and the behavior. Three to seven seconds is a working figure for that gap. It is drawn from what people report about their own sequences, not from a stopwatch in a laboratory. Some sequences run at the short end and some at the long, and the same person will find it varies. It is the scale you train toward after Catch. Catch is the first move: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Your body is not obliged to keep to that number.
