Is it an attachment style or is it a pattern?
CROSS-REFERENCE: TWO FILES
A style is a description of you. It is a good one, arrived at by careful researchers, and it explains a great deal about why the same thing keeps happening in relationships that look nothing like each other.
It does not tell you what happens in the next four seconds. That is the whole of what this page is about, and it is not an argument against attachment theory.
What attachment theory gets right
Almost everything about the origin, and it got there first. Bowlby and Ainsworth established that early caregiving conditions leave a durable template for how closeness is read, and the sixty years of work since has held up better than most of what was published alongside it.
It is also right that the template is not a choice, right that it operates below deliberation, and right that it shows up most clearly under threat rather than in calm. Nothing in this archive disputes any of that, and a great deal of this archive assumes it.
And it is right that naming it helps. Being told there is a category for this, that other people are in it, and that it came from somewhere rather than from a defect in you, reduces shame considerably. That reduction is real and it is worth having.
Where it stops
At the description. A style tells you what kind of reader of closeness you are. It does not tell you that on Thursday at nine in the evening, in the fourteen seconds after a specific sentence, something physical happened in your chest and a behavior followed it.
That is not a gap in the theory. The theory was built to explain development rather than to be operated in real time, and asking it for an instruction is asking it for something it never claimed to supply.
The searches people run after they have found their style are the tell, and they all point at the same missing piece:
- “I know my attachment style but nothing has changed”
- “how do I heal my attachment style”
- “can you change your attachment style”
- “is attachment style permanent”
Every one of those is asking for a mechanism, from a body of work that offers an explanation. The frustration in them is not a failure of the theory. It is a category error, and it is one the whole culture makes at once.
What the archive adds to it
One thing only, and it is narrow: a timestamp.
[MECHANISM]
A physical event arrives first. A band around the chest, a hard fast heart, a drop in the stomach.
Three to seven seconds later the behavior fires. The withdrawal, the sharp sentence, the apology.
In between, nothing has committed. That gap is the entire difference between a description and something you can act on.
So the two accounts are not competitors and they are not the same size. One explains why the template exists. The other says where in the next few seconds it can be interrupted. You can hold both at once, and most people who get anywhere do.
Insight does not rewire. Repetition does. That is why knowing your style accurately for three years has changed the vocabulary you use about yourself and not the Thursday.
So which file is mine?
The archive does not sort by style, because the styles are broad and the files are narrow. What it sorts by is the marker, and two files cover most of what the attachment vocabulary is pointing at.
Read both below for the physical event rather than the description. If the withdrawal comes from your side after a good stretch, that is one file. If the checking gets worse as things get better, that is the other. If both are true in the same week, there is a page for that collision and it is linked from this one.
THE FILES THIS POINTS AT
Read for the body marker rather than for the description. Recognition in this work arrives as a flinch rather than as agreement. All of them are free to read in full.
- The Disappearing Pattern
If the withdrawal follows the good stretch, and the marker is a band around the chest.
Why do I push people away when they get close?
- The Testing Pattern
If the checking gets worse as things get better, and the marker is a hard fast heart.
Why do I test people who love me?
Questions people ask about this
Is it an attachment style or is it a pattern?
Both, and they are different sizes. A style describes how you read closeness and where that reading came from. A pattern is a sequence with a physical marker, a three to seven second gap and a behavior, which is the part that can be interrupted.
I know my attachment style but nothing has changed. Why?
Because a description is not a mechanism. Knowing the category operates on the slow system, and the sequence runs on the fast one. What is missing is not more accuracy about yourself, it is a marker with a time on it.
Can you change your attachment style?
The research suggests templates shift with sustained different experience. What this archive can say is narrower and more usable: the behavior at the end of the sequence changes by repetition, and it changes before the template does.
Is this archive saying attachment theory is wrong?
No, and it assumes a great deal of it. The theory is right about the origin, right that the template is not chosen, and right that naming it reduces shame. It was built to explain development rather than to be operated inside four seconds.
Which is more useful to know?
They do different jobs. The style explains the shape and lowers the shame. The marker gives you somewhere to put your hand. Most people who get anywhere hold both, and the order tends to be style first, marker second.
How do I find my body marker?
Spend three days catching what happens physically before the behavior, without trying to stop it. Chest, stomach, throat, heart, jaw, heat, shoulders. One will keep turning up, and that one is the entrance.
Do I need to know where it came from first?
No. Finding the room reduces shame and explains the shape, and it is the one optional part of this method. You do not need to understand a pattern to interrupt it.
Why does my style seem to change depending on who I am with?
Because the cue changes. A person whose warmth is unpredictable produces a different reading than a person whose warmth is steady, and the sequence follows the reading rather than following you around.
Is anxious or avoidant worse?
Neither is a moral position and this archive does not rank them. They cost differently: one accumulates distance you did not intend, the other accumulates checking that never settles.
What if I am both?
Common, and there is a page for it. Two sequences can run in the same week at the same person, one producing distance and one producing checking, and the collision is what most people mean when they say they are hot and cold.
Is a pattern the same as a diagnosis?
No. This archive makes no clinical claims and does not diagnose anybody. A pattern is an observed sequence with a marker and a timing, which is smaller than a category and considerably more usable.
How many patterns are there?
Nine, and the set is closed. Most people run one that fires most often plus at least one that covers for it, which is why interrupting the first sometimes surfaces the second.
THE ARCHIVES
If you want the marker rather than the category, the assessment names which sequence is running in two minutes.
