Replying to a message you left for days
Read the versions below. Each one answers the question that was asked, and that is the part you skipped.
A late reply is one line about the delay and then the answer. The answer is what was owed. The sorry is just the hinge.
THE WORDS
TO A FRIEND
Sorry for the slow reply. Yes to Saturday, and I am bringing the food.
IN A WORK THREAD
Apologies for the delay. The answer is yes, and the file is attached.
WHEN YOU NO LONGER KNOW WHAT THEY ASKED
I am late and I am sorry. I lost the thread. What did you need from me?
Said as written, or shorter. These words are for after the pattern has run. They say what to do. What the other person does next is theirs.
You read it and meant to answer. Then it was tomorrow, then the weekend. Now the reply needs a reason for the delay, and you do not have one.
This page is the reply. It has the shape of a hinge. One line about being late, then the thing they asked for.
The moment
The unread mark went away days ago. The message is still there, and so is the question in it. Every day you do not answer, the answer feels like it needs more.
That is the condition. The delay was never about the question. It was about the reply growing a cost that the question never had.
The Disappearing Pattern is the name for pulling away as someone gets close. A reply left for days is the smallest version of it, and the most common.
What the words do
The first line names the delay and does not explain it. One word of sorry, then on. The explaining is what kept the reply unsent.
The second line answers the question. Yes or no, the date, the file, the thing. The answer is the whole debt. The sorry is the hinge it swings on.
Answer the question first in your head. Then write the sorry. The order on the screen is the other way round, and that is fine.
If the signal arrives mid-sentence
You open the thread and the stomach drops. The reply starts to grow a paragraph. That drop is the body signal, and the paragraph is the old response.
Catch: Feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. The name is the disappearing, in small.
Intercept: Interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. The different action is typing the answer and sending it with one word of sorry.
Rewrite: Repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. There is a thread like this most weeks.
What not to add
Not what you were busy with. Not a second sorry at the end. Not a line about how bad you are at replying. That asks them to say you are not.
If the question has passed its date, say so and answer the next one. The reply is late. It does not need to be long as well.
