REFERENCE: ONE TERM
Ghosting is ending contact with someone by going silent, with no message or explanation, and not replying when they reach out.
A message arrives and you leave it. A day goes by. Then a week. By now a reply would need an explanation, and the explanation feels harder than the silence. Ghosting is the word for where that ends up: contact stops, with no message to say why.
Many people meet this word as the one left waiting. This page is mostly for the one who goes quiet, and who often cares more than the silence suggests. If you were the one ghosted, there are answers for you in the questions below.
What it looks like
A friend texts to make plans. Your stomach drops, and you put the phone face down. You mean to answer later, when you have more in you. Later does not come.
Each day the gap grows, the reply has to be bigger. First it needed a yes. Now it needs a sorry, then a reason, then a whole story. The reply gets heavier until not replying feels like the only thing left.
It happens with people you like. Sometimes most of all with people you like.
The longer you wait, the bigger the reply has to be.
Leaving people on read
Leaving someone on read means opening their message and not answering. They can often see that you saw it. It is the smallest version of ghosting, and often the first step toward it.
From the inside it rarely feels like a choice. You read it, something tightens, and you tell yourself you will answer properly later. The open message sits there, a little heavier each time you see it.
Breadcrumbing
Breadcrumbing is giving someone small signs of interest without real contact. A like, a one-word reply, a heart on a photo, then nothing again. It keeps the thread alive without picking it up.
For someone who disappears, a breadcrumb can feel like a way to ease the guilt without facing the full reply. It lowers the pressure for a day. It also leaves the other person guessing. If you are on the receiving end, a small sign is not a promise, and this page cannot tell you what it means.
Where the word stops
It is not a diagnosis, and it is not a verdict on who you are. Ghosting is a behavior, the end of a sequence. The sequence is what can be caught.
It runs like this. A message arrives. Your stomach drops or your chest tightens. That is the body signal, the feeling that tells you the pattern is starting. Then you put the phone down. The reasons come after: I'm too tired, I'll do it properly tomorrow.
In this archive that is The Disappearing Pattern. It is the pattern where you pull away from people, often ones you care about, and the silence gets harder to break the longer it runs.
What to do when you notice it
Pick one message you have been avoiding. It can be new or weeks old.
Open it, and feel the body signal: the drop, the tight chest, the urge to put the phone down. Name what is starting: this is the pull to go quiet.
Say one short sentence out loud. One line, now.
Then take the different action instead of the usual response. Send one short, true line. Sorry I went quiet, I'm glad you wrote. You do not owe a full story. A short reply sent today does more than a perfect one never sent.
Count it as one rep, one repetition of the new action. It counts if it was clumsy. It counts if it came a week late.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
Today, find the oldest message you meant to answer.
Feel the drop. Say: one line, now.
Send one true sentence. Count the rep.
The term in use

- A week later the reply feels too big to send, so you send nothing.
- You like their photo instead of answering, and the real message stays open.
Often mixed up with
TAKING SPACE
Taking space says out loud that you need time. Ghosting stops contact with no word at all.
A SLOW REPLY
A slow reply still arrives. Ghosting is when the reply stops coming at all.
BREADCRUMBING
Breadcrumbing keeps sending small signs without real contact. Ghosting sends nothing.
Questions people ask about this term
What does ghosting mean?
It means ending contact by going silent, with no message to say why. The other person reaches out and gets no reply.
Why do I ghost people I actually like?
Because the reply fires a drop in your body, and putting the phone down makes it stop. The more the person matters, the bigger the reply feels.
Why do I ghost my friends?
Often because each day of silence makes the reply heavier. What started as a late yes becomes a sorry, a reason and a story. The silence starts to feel easier.
What is breadcrumbing?
It is giving small signs of interest without real contact. A like or a one-word reply, then nothing again. It keeps the thread alive without picking it up.
What does leaving someone on read mean?
It means opening their message and not answering. It is the smallest version of ghosting, and often the first step toward it.
Is ghosting rude?
It often lands that way for the person waiting. From the inside it rarely feels like a decision. It feels like a reply you cannot face yet.
Is ghosting ever okay?
Yes. If someone makes you feel unsafe, ending contact without explaining can be the right call. This page is about the silence you did not mean to keep.
How do I reply after ghosting someone?
Keep it short and true. Sorry I went quiet, I'm glad you wrote. You do not owe a full story to start again.
I was ghosted. Was it something I did?
This page cannot tell you why another person went quiet. Often the silence comes from a sequence on their side, not from anything you said.
How common is ghosting?
The archive keeps a page of ghosting figures, each one read in its source. It is linked below, so you can see the numbers where they came from.
What if I have been gone too long to reply?
There is no deadline on one true sentence. A short reply sent late still counts as one rep. How they answer is not something this page can promise.
