I ghosted someone I actually cared about
AFTER THE FACT / PATTERN: The Disappearing Pattern
You went quiet on somebody who mattered. Not after a fight and not after a decision, and the length of it is now the thing standing between you and answering.
This page is not going to tell you whether you are a bad person. That is a verdict and this is a record. What is here is what to do in the next ten minutes, and then, if you want it, what the silence was made of.
The next ten minutes
Send eleven words. Not the paragraph you have been composing since about the fourth week, and not an account of the gap.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
Send this, or something this size, and send it before you improve it:
Hi. I went quiet and I am sorry. I would like to see you.
No explanation of the months. No promise about the future. No question they have to answer.
The short version is the one that gets sent. The right version is the one that never does, and you have proved that to yourself for eleven weeks now.
And if you are not going to send anything tonight, that is allowed. Then the ten minutes is this: write the eleven words somewhere, unsent, so the thing standing between you and them tomorrow is a send button rather than a blank page.
Why the long message will not go
Because the debt compounds. A one-day silence needs no explanation. An eleven-week silence appears to need an account of eleven weeks, and you do not have one, because from inside nothing happened.
So the reply has to be good enough to justify the gap, and it never is, so it does not get sent, and the gap grows. That is a second sequence sitting on top of the first, and it is the one that turns a fade into a permanent loss.
The size of the returning message is the only variable you control. It is also the one you have been getting wrong.
What the silence was made of
Check the timing before anything else. In most cases the quiet opened after a good evening rather than after a difficulty. A conversation where one of you said something real. A night you enjoyed.
Then the reply got left until tomorrow, and then it had been a week, and answering acquired a cost that not answering never had. Nobody decides to disappear for a year. It accumulates in steps that each look reasonable from inside.
None of that is offered as a defence and it is not one. It is a description of how something with no event in it managed to end a friendship, which is the part nobody involved has been able to name, including you.
What you cannot control
Whether they answer. That is theirs and it is genuinely theirs, and a page that promised you otherwise would be lying to somebody at eleven at night.
What is worth knowing is that people come back from this more often than the person who went quiet expects, and that the thing that makes it harder is almost never the length of the gap. It is the size of the returning message.
If they do not answer, the sending still counts. It is the repetition, and the repetition is what makes the next one earlier, with somebody you have not lost yet.
What tonight actually is
An entry. A late one, filed after the fact, which is an ordinary thing a record accepts rather than a failure being reopened.
There is no shame register here and nowhere for a guilt entry to be filed. The friendship you have already lost is not what tonight is for. Tonight is for the eleven words, and for the next name on the screen that produces the same tightness.
