WHAT TO SAY / THE STACKS

    Asking for the higher number

Read the three versions below. Each one ends with a full stop, and the full stop is where you stop talking.

The lower number comes out to end the discomfort. The higher number is one sentence and a silence, and the silence is the hard part.

    THE WORDS

    WHEN THE OFFER COMES

    Thank you. I want this.

The number I had in mind is higher. Is there room?

WHEN ASKED FOR YOUR NUMBER FIRST

I am looking for the figure you wrote down before the call. Say it, then stop.

WHEN A CLIENT ASKS YOUR RATE

My rate is the one on your sheet. That includes two rounds of changes.

Said as written, or shorter. Pick the version for your setting and change the names.

The number in your head is higher. You know the market, you know the work, and you wrote the figure down. Then the question comes and a smaller one leaves your mouth.

This page gives you the sentence that says the real number. It is short, and it ends in a silence you have to sit in.

    The moment

The offer is good news, and good news has a feel you do not trust. Something in you reaches for a way to make it smaller. The lower number is that reach.

The discount is not modesty. It is the pattern taking a piece of something good before anyone else can. You have done it with raises, rates and offers.

Success Sabotage is the name for pulling back just as something good is about to land. At a table with a number on it, this is what it looks like.

    What the words do

The first version says thank you, says you want it, and names a gap. Is there room is a question that costs nothing and asks for everything.

The second and third say one number and nothing after it. Write the figure down before the call, because the pattern edits it live.

The sentence is the easy half. The silence after it is the whole job. Do not fill it.

    If the signal arrives mid-sentence

A drop in the stomach as the number forms. A wish to add a but, a however, a lower figure. That drop is the body signal.

Catch: Feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. The name is the sabotage, reaching for the smaller number.

Intercept: Interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. The different action is the number you wrote down, and then nothing.

Rewrite: Repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. Numbers come up more often than offers do. Every quote is practice.

    What not to add

Not but I am flexible. Not an apology for asking. Not a lower number in the same breath, offered in case the first was too much.

Not a speech about why you deserve it. You said the number. The reasons were in the work, and the work is already on the table.
