WHAT TO SAY / THE STACKS

    Apologizing once and stopping

Read the versions below. Say the one you need, then say the next thing, which is not sorry.

One apology names the thing and owns it. The second apology is for the first, and that is where the loop starts.

    THE WORDS

    IN PERSON

I was late and it was my fault. I am sorry.

Here is what I am doing about it.

    BY MESSAGE

I am sorry about yesterday. That was mine.

I would rather talk than text. Tonight?

    AT WORK

That was my error. I have fixed it, and here is what I changed.

    Thanks for flagging it.

Said as written, or shorter. These words are for after the pattern has run. They say what to do. What the other person does next is theirs.

You did the thing you always do. You said sorry, and you meant it. Now a second sorry is already forming, and a third behind it.

This page is the one apology, the sentence after it, and the full stop. It does not say how it is received. That is not yours to write.

    The moment

The first sorry was about the thing. The second is about the first, in case it was not enough. The third is about how you keep doing this.

By the third, the other person is doing the work. They are now reassuring you. The apology has turned into something they have to manage.

The Apology Loop is the name for saying sorry to smooth things over, again and again. Often for things that are not yours. The second sorry is where it starts.

    What the words do

The apology has three parts, and they fit in two sentences. The thing, named. The ownership, plain. The sorry, once.

Then the next sentence is about the thing, not the sorry. What you changed, or what you are doing, or a question about the plan.

A sorry with a full stop after it is an apology. A sorry with another sorry after it is a request to be let off.

    If the signal arrives mid-sentence

The pause after the first sorry is where it happens. The throat tightens and the word is ready to come again. That tightness is the body signal.

Catch: Feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. The name is the loop.

Intercept: Interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. The different action is the next sentence, the one about the thing.

Rewrite: Repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. One sorry, one full stop, every time.

    What not to add

Not a second sorry for the first one. Not sorry for taking up their time. Not sorry for being like this.

Not a request that they say it is fine. That is the loop asking to be closed from the other side. Close it yourself, with the full stop.
