Sending the draft before it feels ready
Read the cover notes below. Copy one, attach the draft as it is, and send before you open it again.
The draft is never ready from the inside. A cover note that names the rough parts is what makes it sendable.
THE WORDS
TO A MANAGER
Here is the draft. Two parts are rough and I have marked them.
I would like your read before I polish.
TO A CLIENT
Attached is version one. Tell me what to cut and what to keep.
I will turn the next version around in two days.
TO YOURSELF, OUT LOUD
This is version one. Version one gets sent.
Said as written, or shorter. Pick the version for your setting and change the names.
The draft has been done for days. Each time you open it, something small needs fixing. Each fix shows you the next one.
This page gives you the note that goes on top of the draft. The note is what lets the draft leave while it is still rough.
The moment
You hover over send. You open the file one more time. You know the file does not need you, and you go in anyway.
The fixing feels like care. From the outside it looks like a deadline moving. Nobody has seen the work, and the work has been done for a week.
The Perfectionism Trap is the name for not finishing because finished is never good enough. The draft is where it lives.
What the words do
The note names the rough parts before anyone can find them. That takes the finding away from the reader and gives it to you.
It also asks for a specific thing: a read, a cut, a keep. A specific ask gives the reader a job. A draft without a note just asks to be judged.
The note is short because the draft is the point. Write the note, attach the file, send. In that order, and without a last look.
If the signal arrives mid-sentence
The urge to open the file once more has a feel. A tightening behind the eyes, a held breath. That tightening is the body signal.
Catch: Feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. The name is the trap.
Intercept: Interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. The different action is send, with the file closed.
Rewrite: Repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. Every draft sent rough is one more time it left.
What not to add
Not an apology for the roughness. Not a list of everything you know is wrong with it. Not a promise that the next one will be perfect.
And not one more read before sending. If you must look, look after. By then it has already gone, which was the whole job.
