- Coming back after going quiet
The returning message is short. It names the silence, says sorry once, and asks for nothing.
- Saying no to family
A no to family is one sentence with no reason attached. The reason is what the pattern uses to turn it back into a yes.
- Apologizing once and stopping
One apology names the thing and owns it. The second apology is for the first, and that is where the loop starts.
- Asking for space without vanishing
Space with a return time on it is space. Space without one is the start of a disappearance.
- Turning down the extra work that finds you because you are good
Being good at the job is why the extra work finds you. Saying yes to all of it is the pattern, not the job.
- Taking a compliment at work
The answer to a compliment is thank you and a full stop. Everything after the full stop is the deflection.
- Sending the draft before it feels ready
The draft is never ready from the inside. A cover note that names the rough parts is what makes it sendable.
- Replying to a message you left for days
A late reply is one line about the delay and then the answer. The answer is what was owed. The sorry is just the hinge.
- Telling your partner you have been checking, and that you are stopping
The sentence has two parts: I have been checking, and I am stopping. It asks for nothing, and it does not ask to be told it is fine.
- Leaving an argument before it goes wrong, and coming back
Walking out of an argument is only leaving if you do not say when you are back. With a time, it is a pause.
- Saying you will not fix it this time
You can stay in a friend's crisis without taking it over. The sentence that does both is: I am here, and I am not fixing this one.
- Saying you are angry before you shout
I am angry, said quietly and early, is the sentence that replaces the shout. It has to come first, or the shout does.
- Asking for the higher number
The lower number comes out to end the discomfort. The higher number is one sentence and a silence, and the silence is the hard part.
