Turning down the extra work that finds you because you are good
Read the three versions below. The first one is a question, and that is the point.
Being good at the job is why the extra work finds you. Saying yes to all of it is the pattern, not the job.

Said as written, or shorter. Pick the version for your setting and change the names.
The extra task comes to you first. Not because nobody else could, but because you would say yes. You have been saying yes for years.
This page is the sentence that goes where the yes usually goes. It is a question, and it hands the choice back to the person asking.
The moment
Someone leans in with a task. You feel the answer leave before your week has been checked. Later, in the car, you add up what the yes cost.
The job does need some yeses. This page is about the ones that were out before you decided. They build a week nobody chose.
The Draining Bond is the name for a tie that costs more than it returns. A workplace can hold that tie as well as a person can.
What the words do
The first version does not say no. It says yes with a condition, and asks the other person to pick what moves. That is not a trick. It is the real state of your week.
The second gives a date. The third is a plain no for a plain favor. The second line keeps the tie open.
The question is the different action. It puts a pause where the yes used to be.
If the signal arrives mid-sentence
The yes has a feel before it has a sound. A small lift in the chest, the start of a nod. That lift is the body signal.
Catch: Feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. The name is the bond, and it is running at work.
Intercept: Interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. The different action is the question: which one moves?
Rewrite: Repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. The extra work finds you weekly, so the practice comes weekly too.
What not to add
Not an apology. Not a list of everything on your plate, said fast, to earn the no. Not a promise to do it at the weekend.
You may still take the task. The point is that you took it after the question. The pattern did not take it for you.
