Telling your partner you have been checking, and that you are stopping
Read the two versions below. Say the whole thing in one go, then stop talking.
The sentence has two parts: I have been checking, and I am stopping. It asks for nothing, and it does not ask to be told it is fine.
THE WORDS
IN PERSON
I have been checking your phone. I am stopping.
That is mine to fix. It is not a test for you to pass.
BY MESSAGE, IF YOU CANNOT SAY IT IN THE ROOM
I need to tell you something tonight, in person.
I have been checking up on you, and I am stopping. I wanted you to know before I did.
Said as written, or shorter. These words are for after the pattern has run. They say what to do. What the other person does next is theirs.
You keep checking, and you know it. The phone, the location, how fast the reply came. Each check buys an hour and costs the next one.
This page is the sentence that ends it out loud. It says what you did and what you are doing. It does not say what comes after, because that is not yours.
The moment
The check is a test. If the phone is clean, you passed, until the next one. If the location matches, fine, until it does not refresh.
A test like this has no last question. That is the condition. The only way it ends is a sentence said to the person being tested.
The Testing Pattern is the name for setting up checks to see whether someone stays. The phone is where it runs now, and it runs quietly.
What the words do
The first part is a plain report. The second part is a plain decision. Both are about you, and neither asks for a response.
The third line matters most. It is not a test for you to pass. That sentence takes the test off the table, which is the only place it can be stopped.
Say it and then stop. Whatever is said back, the sentence has been said, and it stands.
If the signal arrives mid-sentence
Halfway through, a wave of wanting to soften it. A tight throat, the start of an explanation. That tightness is the body signal.
Catch: Feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. The name is the testing, trying to get one more question in.
Intercept: Interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. The different action is the full stop after I am stopping.
Rewrite: Repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. The urge to check comes back. Each time, not checking is the practice.
What not to add
Not a list of what you found or did not find. Not a question about who someone was. Not a condition, as in I will stop if you.
And not a request to be told it is all right. That request is the test wearing a new face. The stopping is yours, and it stands on its own.
