Making it right
This term is defined just below. Read the definition first, then open a page where the term is used, listed at the end.
REFERENCE: ONE TERM
Making it right means doing what you can to repair what your behavior cost someone, and then changing what you do next time.
You want to fix what you broke. The shouting, the test, the months of silence. You can see what it cost them, and you want it undone.
Making it right is the plain phrase for repair after a pattern runs. This page will not tell you how the other person responds. Nobody can know that from here. It is about the parts that are actually in your hands.
What it looks like
After a fight, you want to talk it through tonight, all of it, until it is settled. After an accusation that turned out to be wrong, you want to explain every reason you had. After going quiet for months, you draft a long message about why.
Each of those wants an ending you can feel. Most of them ask the other person to do the work of ending it for you.
You want it fixed tonight. Repair is mostly what you do after tonight.
Making amends
Making amends means owning what you did and doing something about it. It has three plain parts.
First, one short, true sentence that names what you did, said once. Second, room, if they want it. No chasing, no checking, no follow-up asking whether they saw the first message. Third, a plan for the next time, told once on a calm day.
[REWRITE FRAME]
I went quiet to see if you would notice. That was a test, and it was not fair to you.
Next time I feel that pull, I am going to tell you I am finding it hard, instead of going silent.
A plan is not a promise that it will never happen again. A promise covers the whole future, and they may have heard it before. A plan names one moment and one action.
Too late to fix it
This is the question under most of the others. Is it too late? Can it be saved? This page will not answer it. Anyone who answers it for you tonight is guessing.
What is available tonight is smaller. What you say, and how short it is. Whether you leave them room. What you do with the waiting. And what you do the next time the same feeling rises.
The last one is the repair that does not depend on their answer. Whatever they decide, the next moment is still yours to change.
Where it fits
The Rage Pattern is anger that arrives far bigger than the moment. You may need to repair after shouting. The Testing Pattern is pushing someone to find out whether they will stay. You may need to repair after a test they did not know they were taking.
The Disappearing Pattern is pulling away when someone gets close. You may need to repair a silence. In all three, the long explanation tends to do a second job: getting you out from under how it looks.
What to do when you notice it
Start with the body signal. That is the physical feeling that comes first, such as heat in the face, a tight chest or a sinking stomach. Name what is starting: the same pull that did the damage, or the rush to fix it all tonight.
Say one short sentence out loud, even quietly.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
This is the same pull as before. The repair is doing it differently this time.
Then take a different action instead of the usual response. Leave the room instead of shouting. Say you are finding it hard instead of testing. Send one short line instead of going quiet.
Count it as one rep, one repetition of the new move. Each one is part of the repair, whether or not anyone else sees it.
The term in use
- You say one true sentence about what you did, once, and stop.
- They want room, so you stop checking and leave the next move to them.
- On a calm day, you tell them your plan for next time.

AN EXPLANATION
An explanation says why it happened. Repair says what you did and what you will do next time. A long explanation often defends you.
WINNING THEM BACK
Winning someone back is about their answer. Making it right is about your part, whatever their answer is.
Questions people ask about this term
How do I make it right after hurting someone?
Say one short, true sentence about what you did, once. Give them room if they want it. Then change what you do the next time the same feeling rises.
What does making amends mean?
It means owning what you did and doing something about it. Name it plainly, leave room, and tell them your plan for next time.
Is it too late to fix it?
This page cannot answer that, and nobody can from outside. What you can still do is say it plainly, give room, and change the next moment.
Should I explain why I did it?
Keep it short. A long explanation often does a second job, which is defending you. If they want to know more, they can ask.
How do I rebuild trust?
Trust is built from what happens next time, many times. One sentence now, and then a different action the next time the same feeling rises.
Should I promise it will never happen again?
A plan does more than a promise. Name the feeling you will notice and the one thing you will do instead.
What if they do not want to talk?
Give them room. Do not chase or check. Room is something you can give, and it takes nothing from you.
Can I make it right if they are not in my life anymore?
You can still change the next moment, with whoever is in your life now. That part does not depend on them.
How do I make it right after accusing someone wrongly?
Name it plainly: I accused you and I was wrong. If you checked something of theirs, say you did and that you are stopping. Then stop.
Why do I want to fix everything tonight?
Because waiting feels unbearable. But fixing it all tonight usually asks them to settle it for you. Most repair happens after tonight.
Does changing my behavior count as making amends?
Yes. It is the part of repair that lasts. Every time the same pull rises and you do something different, that is part of making it right.
