Saying you are angry before you shout
Read the three versions below. Each one names the anger at a normal volume, which is the whole trick.
I am angry, said quietly and early, is the sentence that replaces the shout. It has to come first, or the shout does.
THE WORDS
IN PERSON
I am angry. Give me a minute and I will say why.
BY MESSAGE
I am angry about this morning. Not a crisis.
Can we talk at seven?
AT WORK
I am frustrated by how that went.
I want to say so now, quietly, rather than later, loudly.
Said as written, or shorter. Pick the version for your setting and change the names.
The anger is real and getting louder. You can hear it in your own voice, a half step up. The next sentence is going to be loud.
This page gives you the sentence that goes before that one. It names the anger at a normal volume. That is the whole move.
The moment
Anger that is not named gets louder until it is. That is the condition. The shout is anger finally getting said, late and at the wrong size.
Said early, at speaking volume, it is information. Said late, at full volume, it is the only thing anyone hears.
The Rage Pattern is the name for anger that arrives faster than the choice to have it. The sentence on this page is the choice, put back in.
What the words do
The first version buys a minute. Naming the anger and asking for sixty seconds is a complete sentence, and it is true.
The second names it and sizes it. Not a crisis. The third does the same at work. There the word angry is heavy, so it uses frustrated and says why now.
The sentence is short because the volume is the message. Say it at the size you want the rest of the talk to be.
If the signal arrives mid-sentence
Heat rising up the neck. The jaw tight, the breath short. Those are the body signal, and they come a few seconds before the voice goes up.
Catch: Feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. The name is the rage, and you can say it inside.
Intercept: Interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. The different action is I am angry, at speaking volume.
Rewrite: Repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. The heat comes back. The sentence gets faster than it.
What not to add
Not the reason yet, if the reason comes out loud. Not a list of every other time. Not you always.
Give the minute you asked for. Then say why, in one or two sentences. The sentence bought time. Use it.
