The apology after is the sorry you owe someone once a pattern has run at them, said once, plainly, and then left alone.
It already happened, and they saw it. You raised your voice, or went cold, or said the thing you were testing them with. Now the room is quiet in the wrong way, and you know a sorry is owed.
The apology after is that sorry. It is not the opening move of a long talk. It is not a promise about the future. It is one plain sentence that names what you did and takes it as yours.
What it looks like
The heat goes down. Your stomach drops. You go to find them and the words come out in a rush: sorry, I was tired, you know how I get, but you did say, and anyway I am sorry, I am really sorry, are we okay?
That is four things at once. An apology, an excuse, a charge against them and a request to be told it is fine. Only the first one was owed.
The sorry was for them. Most of what came after it was for you.
Apologizing after yelling
This is the most common reason people look for the words. The Rage Pattern is anger that arrives far bigger than the moment. You may shout over a small thing and feel sick a minute later.
Wait until the heat is gone. Then say one short sentence at an ordinary volume. Then stop.

No but. No explanation. No list of what they said first.
Do not ask them to say it is all right. That hands them a second job: getting through what happened, and then looking after you. If they want room, give it.
Why one sorry and not five
The Apology Loop is the habit of saying sorry before you have thought about it. You may say sorry again an hour later, and again the next morning, and still feel it is owed.
The second sorry is usually not for them. It is for the drop in your stomach, which an apology quiets for a while. Each extra one asks the other person to reassure you again.
Studies read on this site's Myth Files found that a bare sorry was seen as less effective than an apology with more parts. That does not mean more words. It means naming what you did and owning it, once.
After a test
The Testing Pattern is pushing someone to find out whether they will stay. You may go quiet to see if they notice, or accuse them to see what they do.
The apology after a test names the test. I went quiet to see if you would chase me. That was a test, and it was not fair to you. Then stop. Do not ask whether they passed.
What to do when you notice it
When the urge to over-apologize rises, notice the body signal first. That is the physical feeling that comes before the words, such as a dropped stomach or a tight throat. Name what is starting: the second sorry.
Say one short sentence out loud, even quietly.

Then take a different action instead of the usual response. Put the phone down. Do an ordinary task. Talk about something else the next time you see them.
Count it as one rep, one repetition of the new move. A second sorry held back is a rep. So is a first sorry said without the but.

An apology gives something to the other person. Asking if you are okay asks them to give something back.

A promise covers the whole future. A plan for the next time names one moment and one action.
