REFERENCE: ONE TERM
Undercharging is asking for less than your work is worth, often lowering the figure before anyone has pushed back.
The number came out smaller than planned. You had it written down. Then something arrived in the room, and a smaller figure came out of your mouth. Undercharging is the word for asking less than your work is worth.
Sometimes it is a business choice. Often it is not a choice at all. In this archive it most often points at two patterns. The Apology Loop is the pull to smooth things over and take the blame. You feel it as a drop in the stomach before the sorry or the discount comes out. Success Sabotage is the pull to undo good things just as they start to work. You feel it as a tight chest when a client says yes.
What it looks like
You say the figure. Before they can answer, you add that it includes extra rounds. Then that it can be lower. Then why it is fair. By the end of the sentence you have argued against your own price.
Or the client says yes straight away. Something in you drops. You send a note with the invoice: sorry this took a while, and I took a bit off.
Nobody asked for the discount. You offered it before they could.
What happens when you say the number
The archive's full page on undercharging describes the body clearly. Heat rises up the neck into the face. There is a pull to look away and fill the silence. The voice speeds up. And there is an urge to keep talking after the figure is out.
That page files it under Compliment Deflection, the pull to push praise away as it arrives. If being told your work is good feels harder than naming its price, start there. If your stomach drops and an apology follows, the pull to smooth things over may be the one running.
It also explains why written quotes come out closer to the real figure. On paper there is no face to read and no silence to fill.
Why the discount comes after the yes
It seems strange to lower a price someone already agreed to. But the yes is a kind of praise. It puts a value on you in front of someone. For some people that is the moment the urge to shrink it fires.
Then comes the cost. You do the work at the low figure and resent it the whole way through. The resentment shows up as slower replies and less care. The work comes back with less praise, and the low figure feels confirmed.
Why research on rates does not fix it
Many people know exactly what others charge. They have the figure in a note on their phone. It does not survive the conversation.
That is because the problem was never the information. It is a few seconds in the room, when the number has to leave your mouth. Those seconds are what can change.
What to do when you notice it
Start with the body, because it moves first. As the number gets close, notice the heat in your face, the stomach drop or the tight chest. Name it to yourself: there is the discount, coming.
Then say one short sentence out loud, even under your breath, before the number.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
Heat is up. Say the number. Then stop.
Then take the different action instead of the usual response. Say the figure and nothing after it. No qualifier, no smaller option, no apology. Let the silence sit. The other person is usually just doing sums.
Count that as one rep, one repetition of the different action. If you dropped the price anyway, name it out loud afterward. That counts too, and the next quote is another chance.
The term in use
- You say your rate, then offer a cheaper version before they reply.
- A client agrees at once, and you knock some off the invoice anyway.
- You send the work with an apology for how long it took.
Often mixed up with
A DISCOUNT
A discount is a plan you chose ahead of time. Undercharging happens in the moment, often before anyone asked.
BEING GENEROUS
Generosity gives freely and feels good after. Undercharging tends to leave resentment behind it.
NOT KNOWING THE MARKET
Not knowing is fixed by finding out. Undercharging happens even when you know the going rate.
Questions people ask about this term
What does undercharging mean?
It means asking for less than your work is worth. It often happens in the moment, with the figure dropping before anyone pushes back.
Why do I undercharge for my work?
Often because saying the number puts a value on you in front of someone. For many people that brings heat or a stomach drop, and the discount ends the feeling.
Why do I lower my price before anyone asks?
Coming down first removes the risk of being turned down. It feels safer, and it costs you every time.
Why is it easier to write a quote than say it?
On paper there is no face to read and no silence to fill. The body reaction that lowers the figure has less to work with.
Is undercharging imposter syndrome?
That is a label for feeling like a fraud. It stops short of the seconds where the number changes, which is where you can do something.
Why do I resent clients I undercharged?
Part of you knew the work was worth more and watched it happen. That resentment can leak into the work itself.
Why do I apologize when I send an invoice?
Asking to be paid can feel like asking too much. The sorry arrives to smooth it over before anyone objects.
How do I stop undercharging?
Notice the body as the number gets close, say one short sentence, then say the figure and stop talking. Count each time you do it.
What do I say after I give my price?
Nothing. Let the silence sit. The other person is usually just thinking it over.
Which pattern is undercharging?
Often the pull to smooth things over, the pull to push praise away, or the pull to undo good things. The assessment names which one runs most for you.
