Why do I give my creative work away for free?

PATTERN: The Draining Bond  /  ARENA: CREATIVE WORK

You quoted nothing and resented it afterward. Both of those, every time, in that order, and the resentment has never once made the next yes any slower.

This is The Draining Bond, attached to work rather than to a person. The thing holding you is not the client and it is not the money. It is a piece of reasoning that arrives already finished.

Why do I say yes before I have thought about it?

Because the yes is loaded before the request ends. It is not a decision that came out badly. It is a decision that was never open, and the reasoning turns up afterward to explain what has already happened.

The reasoning in this arena sounds like generosity, and that is exactly what makes it work. It is good exposure. They cannot afford it. It is only a few hours. I would have made it anyway. Saying no would be precious about something I do for love.

Every one of those may contain something true. A cover story that was obviously false would have been discarded years ago. Watch the shape rather than the content: a good month produces yes, a terrible month produces yes with an explanation attached, and when the conclusion is fixed before the reasoning starts, the reasoning is not reasoning.

Each thought is the chain rephrased. Each rephrasing makes the chain feel like character.

Why does asking to be paid feel like a betrayal of the work?

Because a price makes the work into a thing with a value, and a value can be disputed. Free work cannot be assessed and cannot be refused on cost. Giving it away keeps it, and you, out of the range where a judgment can be made.

There is a second mechanism stacked on that one and it is the more common of the two. Being paid puts your cost into the arrangement, and this program was written to keep your cost out of every arrangement. The number is not really about money. It is a claim that your time counts, and the claim is the part that is prohibited.

The phrasings arrive from people already doing the work, and they are the searcher's own:

    • “why do I undercharge for my work”
    • “why do I drop my price before anyone asks”
    • “why can't I say a number out loud”
    • “I quoted low and resented the job the whole way through”

The last one is not a question and it is the most complete description of the sequence in the set. The quote, the resentment, and the fact that the two arrived in that order rather than the other way round.

What does this feel like in the body?

Heat up the face at the moment the number would have to be said, and a weight across the shoulders when the message with the request arrives. Some people report a held breath through the whole conversation, and almost everybody reports the flat hollow week afterward.

That hollow week is the clearest measurement available and the one nobody counts. It is not about the client. It arrives on schedule after every unpaid yes, regardless of how pleasant the person was.

    [MECHANISM]

The weight is the first domino. It arrives three to seven seconds before the yes does.

The reasoning that follows sounds like generosity, which is why it cannot be argued with from inside.

The math is the chain thinking out loud. You are not constructing it. You are receiving it, and it will reach the same answer next time whatever the month contained.

Then the drop. Most people who do say a number report saying it and immediately taking ten percent off, in the same breath, before anybody has objected to anything. That is the sequence completing itself out loud.

Why does the resentment never change anything?

Because resentment arrives after the yes and the yes is loaded before the request ends. It is downstream of the whole sequence, which is why six weeks of it produces no change at the next request, and why you have concluded from that that you have no spine.

That conclusion is wrong and it is expensive. What is missing is not resolve. The window is upstream of where you have been aiming, and nothing applied after the yes can reach it.

In the room where this was installed, your cost was not part of the arrangement. Somebody else's need set the terms and asking for something in return was the move that was not available. Grown up, that arrives as a physical conviction at the moment a number would have to be said.

None of that is an excuse and it is not offered as one. It is a mechanism, and a mechanism can be interrupted.

How do I say a number and hold it?

Not by deciding to value yourself more. You have decided that repeatedly, usually during the hollow week. Insight does not rewire. Repetition does.

The window is three to seven seconds wide. It opens at the weight, when the request arrives, and closes when the yes leaves your mouth or the number gets lowered. Inside that gap nothing has been given away.

    [INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]

Out loud, quietly, when the request lands:

There is the weight. The math is starting. I am not answering today.

Then delay rather than refuse. One sentence: let me come back to you tomorrow with a number. The sequence needs the answer immediately and it does not survive a night.

    [REWRITE FRAME]

Decide the rate in a calm week, in writing, with nobody asking. Then the number exists before the weight does and it does not have to be composed during it.

Say the number and stop talking. Most of it is lost in the sentence after the number, and the silence is not yours to fill.

Free is allowed. Free chosen in a calm week is a decision. Free arrived at during the weight is the pattern.

And a failed interruption is still an interrupted sequence. Saying the number, dropping it, and naming what happened afterward is a repetition, and the naming is what makes the next one catchable.

Is this generosity, or is this a pattern running?

The test is what it costs afterward. Generosity is chosen and it settles. You give the thing, you are glad you did, and there is no week on the other side of it.

This one produces the hollow week every time, it arrives on the same cue regardless of who is asking, and it reaches the same answer whether you can afford it or not. Generosity does not have a fixed conclusion. A program does.

That is worth checking directly rather than taking on trust, and the place to check it is the file this page comes from, where the same reasoning is described with no work in it at all.

This is not who you are. It is a pattern running. Those are different things, and the difference is the entire method.

    THE FULL FILE

This page is one room. The Draining Bond is one of nine files in the archive and it runs in all of them, which is the fastest way to tell a pattern from a situation. The full file describes the same circuit outside this arena entirely.

    Questions people ask about this

Why do I give my creative work away for free?

Because the yes is loaded before the request ends and the reasoning arrives afterward to explain it. In this arena the reasoning sounds like generosity, which is why it cannot be argued with from the inside.

Why do I drop my price before anyone asks?

Because the drop is the sequence completing itself out loud. The number gets said and ten percent comes off in the same breath, before anybody has objected, which is the clearest evidence that the drop is not a negotiation.

Why can't I say a number out loud?

Because the number is a claim that your time counts, and this program was written to keep your cost out of every arrangement. The heat up the face at that moment is the marker, and it arrives before the sentence does.

Why do I undercharge for my work?

Because a price makes the work into a thing with a value, and a value can be disputed. Low or free keeps it, and you, out of the range where a judgment can be made. The cost is paid afterward instead.

    What is the body signal?

A weight across the shoulders when the request arrives, heat up the face at the moment a number would have to be said, and the flat hollow week afterward. That week is the clearest measurement available and nobody counts it.

Why does resenting it never change the next one?

Because resentment arrives after the yes and the yes was loaded before the request ended. It is downstream of the whole sequence, which is why six weeks of it produces no change and why you have concluded you have no spine.

    Is exposure ever worth it?

Sometimes, and this page does not decide that for you. What it says is that the decision should be made in a calm week rather than during the weight. Free chosen in advance is a decision. Free arrived at in the moment is the pattern.

How do I hold a rate once I have said it?

Say the number and stop talking. Most of it is lost in the sentence after the number, and the silence is not yours to fill. That two-part move is the whole technique and it is harder than it reads.

How do I say no to a client who cannot afford me?

Delay rather than refuse: let me come back to you tomorrow with a number. The sequence needs the answer immediately and does not survive a night. Then keep the answer about your rate rather than about their situation.

    Is this generosity?

Generosity is chosen and it settles. This produces a hollow week every time, arrives on the same cue whoever is asking, and reaches the same answer whether you can afford it or not. A fixed conclusion is the signature of a program.

Why do I resent a job I agreed to do?

Because you did not agree to it in any meaningful sense. The yes was produced by the sequence and the part of you that would have declined was not consulted, which is exactly what the resentment is reporting.

How long does it take to change?

The interrupt practice runs forty days for most people. Forty days is the shape of the work rather than a deadline, and one request answered tomorrow instead of instantly counts as a repetition.
