Why do I go numb with my kids?
PATTERN: The Disappearing Pattern / ARENA: PARENTING AND FAMILY
You were there and you were gone. In the room, answering in the right places, handing over the cup, and somewhere behind your own face there was nobody home at all.
This is The Disappearing Pattern, in the arena where it is hardest to see and easiest to punish yourself for. It is not the version that shouts. It is the version that leaves without moving.
Why do I go blank instead of losing my temper?
Because withdrawal is the exit this system was built to use, and a room you cannot walk out of still has one available. You go where nobody can follow you, which is inward, and the body stays behind to do the tasks.
The cue is almost never conflict. It is demand with no gap in it. Being needed continuously for eleven hours. Being touched all day by somebody who has every right to be touching you. A sentence you have started four times and not finished once.
Which is why so much of this arrives at the end of the day rather than at the worst moment of it. The flat is not a response to a bad event. It is what is left when the supply that keeps you present ran out somewhere between the school run and the bath.
One thing on this page outranks everything else on it, and it goes here rather than at the end so nobody has to read four sections to reach it.
If the flatness has gone far enough that a child's basic needs are not being met, or it has been there most days for weeks, or you are not sure you want to be here, that is not a pattern question and this is not the page for it. Talk to a doctor this week, and say the word flat out loud to them, because it is a thing they treat rather than a thing they judge.
In the United States: 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, call or text 988. Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline, call or text 1-800-422-4453, which is staffed around the clock and is used by parents asking for help for themselves. Emergency services: 911.
Asking is not an admission of anything. Pattern work is not a substitute for real help and it is not urgent enough to go first. It will still be here afterward.
Why do I feel nothing by bath time?
Because a system under continuous load turns down everything that is not carrying weight, and warmth is expensive. It is not load-bearing in the way that getting three people fed is load-bearing, so it goes first, and it goes without any announcement.
That is why the report is so consistent and so specific. There is nothing left by half past six. Not anger. Nothing. The tasks still get done and the person doing them is running on the minimum.
The phrasings people bring are precise about the state and vague about the cause, which is the right way round:
- “why do I go cold with my kids instead of loud”
- “why do I feel nothing left by bath time”
- “why do I get angry when I am touched all day”
- “touched out and still needed”
The last one is not a search, it is a sentence people say, and it is the most accurate description of the condition in the whole reservoir. Two things at once, both true, neither cancelling the other.
What does this feel like in the body?
A flatness rather than a heat, which is what makes it so hard to catch. Sound arrives without landing. The face goes still. There is a slight distance in the eyes that older children read instantly and younger ones read as something being wrong with them.
For some people it is preceded by a narrowing: the room getting too loud, a buzzing under the skin, one thought being cut in half repeatedly. That is the earlier signal and it is the more useful one, because it arrives before the disappearance rather than during it.
[MECHANISM]
The narrowing is the first domino. It arrives three to seven seconds before the flat does, and often an hour before the worst of it.
The flat is the behavior: the withdrawal that does not require leaving the room.
The thought that follows, I just need everyone to stop for a minute, I have nothing left, I am a terrible parent, is not the cause. It is the narration, and the third one is the most expensive of the three.
Note what is not happening here. Nobody has stopped loving anybody. A supply ran out. Those are different events and only one of them is about your character.
Why does the guilt afterward make it worse?
Because the accounting you do at eleven at night is itself load, and load is the thing that lowers the threshold. Self-punishment after a flat evening is fuel for the next one.
It also does something more specific here. Guilt about being distant produces an effort to be more present tomorrow, which raises the demand you are placing on a supply that is already spent, which brings the flat forward rather than pushing it back.
In the room where this was installed, going away without leaving was the available move. Somebody was unreachable, or the way to survive a room was to not be fully in it. A child who learned that has an exit that works in any room, including the ones they would give anything to be present in.
None of that is offered as an excuse and none of it is a verdict on what kind of parent you are. It is a mechanism, and a mechanism can be interrupted.
How do I come back into the room?
Not by trying to feel more. Feeling is downstream and it arrives long after the moment has passed. Insight does not rewire. Repetition does.
The window opens at the narrowing and closes when the flat settles. It is wider in this arena than almost anywhere else, because the cue builds through the day rather than arriving in a second.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
Out loud, quietly, in front of them if they are there:
I am going flat. This is the load, not them. I am coming back for one thing.
Then do one small physical thing that requires contact and takes ten seconds. Get down to their height. Put a hand on a shoulder. Ask one question and wait for the whole answer.
[REWRITE FRAME]
One reachable minute is worth more than an hour of being in the room.
Do not aim at the whole evening. Aim at ten seconds, once, on the worst day, and let that be the repetition.
A file accepts an addendum at any point. Coming back on a bad Thursday is filing one, not reopening a failure.
There is one structural change worth more than any script here, and it is not a technique. The load is real, and a gap in it is the single most effective intervention available. Twenty minutes where nobody needs anything from you is not indulgence. It is the supply the presence is made of.
Is this exhaustion, or is this a pattern running?
Both may be true and they are worth separating, because they have different answers. Ordinary exhaustion lifts with rest. A weekend away, a full night, a week of help, and the warmth comes back with it.
If the flat survives the rest, or if it arrives on the good days as reliably as the hard ones, or if you can find the same disappearance in a relationship, a friendship and a job, then the tiredness is not the whole story and something portable is running underneath it.
One honest limit. If the flatness is general rather than aimed at the demand, and it has been there most days for weeks, that is a question for a doctor rather than for a page about patterns, and the two are not in competition.
This is not who you are. It is a pattern running. Those are different things, and the difference is the entire method.
THE FULL FILE
This page is one room. The Disappearing Pattern is one of nine files in the archive and it runs in all of them, which is the fastest way to tell a pattern from a situation. The full file describes the same circuit outside this arena entirely.

Why do I go numb with my kids?
Because withdrawal is the exit this sequence uses, and a room you cannot leave still has an inward one. The cue is continuous demand rather than conflict, which is why it arrives at the end of the day rather than at the worst moment of it.
Why do I go cold with my kids instead of loud?
Because it is the same circuit with the volume routed elsewhere. Loud is a threshold being crossed. Flat is a supply running out. Both arrive without a decision, and children read the second one just as fast as the first.
Why do I feel nothing left by bath time?
Because a system under continuous load turns down everything that is not carrying weight, and warmth is expensive. The tasks still get done on the minimum. That is a reading of where the supply went rather than evidence about how much you love them.
Why do I get angry when I am touched all day?
Because continuous contact is load that almost nobody counts as load. The irritation is a threshold report rather than a feeling about the child touching you, and it usually arrives alongside the flatness rather than instead of it.
What is the body signal here?
A flatness rather than a heat: sound arriving without landing, the face going still, a slight distance in the eyes. Often preceded by a narrowing, where the room gets too loud and one thought keeps getting cut in half.
Why does the guilt at night make the next day worse?
Because the accounting is itself load, and load lowers the threshold. It also produces an effort to be more present tomorrow, which raises the demand on a supply that is already spent and brings the flat forward.
Am I a bad parent?
That is a verdict and this method does not issue them. What can be examined is a sequence: continuous demand, a narrowing, a flat that arrives without a decision. Nobody stopped loving anybody. A supply ran out.
How do I come back into the room?
Aim at ten seconds rather than the evening. Name the flat out loud, then do one physical thing that takes contact: get down to their height, a hand on a shoulder, one question with the whole answer waited for.
Is this exhaustion?
Ordinary exhaustion lifts with rest. If the flat survives a full night and a week of help, or arrives on good days as reliably as hard ones, or shows up in a friendship and a job too, something portable is running underneath the tiredness.
Does my child know?
Usually yes, and usually earlier than adults expect, which is the part that hurts. What they read is the distance rather than the reason for it. That is also why ten reachable seconds registers with them far more than a good hour does.
Is this depression or postnatal depression?
This archive makes no clinical claims and does not diagnose anybody. If the flatness is general rather than aimed at the demand, or it started after a birth, that is a doctor's question and it is a thing they treat rather than a thing they judge.
What actually helps most?
A gap in the load. Twenty minutes where nobody needs anything from you is not indulgence, it is the supply that presence is made of, and it does more here than any script does.
