Why do I keep chasing approval from a parent who never gives it?

Start small: next time you have news, tell someone whose approval arrives on time first. Then wait a day before you call the parent.

PATTERN: Attraction to Harm  /  ARENA: PARENTING AND FAMILY

You called to tell him the news. He asked about your brother. You stayed on the call twenty more minutes, waiting for the one sentence that did not come. On the drive home you were already planning the next thing that might earn it.

This is Attraction to Harm in a family. The core file, Why am I attracted to people who hurt me?, describes a pull toward people who withhold. A parent who never gives approval can be the first room that pull was learned in. It does not have to be. Before you read on, say out loud the last thing you did mainly so they would notice.

Why does their approval matter more than anyone else's?

Because theirs was the first grade. For years, their face was the only report card in the house. That weight does not leave when you move out.

And because it never arrived in full. A reward that comes rarely, and without warning, holds a behavior in place far harder than one that comes every time. The near miss does most of the work. That's good, but. Not bad, for you. Your sister did it faster. Each one is a crumb, and a crumb keeps the chase alive longer than nothing would.

You are not chasing the approval. You are chasing the moment the drought ends, and the drought is what keeps you.

Notice the shape rather than the content. The chase does not slow down when you do well. It speeds up. A promotion becomes a reason to call, and the call becomes a reason to plan the next promotion.

Why doesn't approval from anyone else count?

Your partner says they are proud of you. Your manager says it. A friend says it unprompted. It lands like nothing. No spike, no relief, no reason to call anyone.

That is the same pull from the other side. Approval that arrives on time produces no charge, so the body reads it as not counting. The one that arrives once a year, if at all, is the one that feels real.

Check which page you are on. If a parent does say it and you push it away with a joke, that is Compliment Deflection. This archive has a separate file for it. This page is for when it does not come, and you go back.

What happens in my body before I call them?

The body signal is what you feel as the pattern starts. Here it is often a tightening low in the stomach, the voice going up half a step, the achievement being rehearsed before you have said hello. It fires at the thought of them, not in the room.

    [MECHANISM]

The stomach tightening is the first step. It arrives three to seven seconds before the report begins.

Those seconds are the window, the space between the signal and the behavior. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measurement.

The reward is the crumb, or just the end of the waiting. Either one teaches the body to dial again.

The circuit is the whole sequence of steps. The cue is their attention, or its absence. Then the body signal. Then the thought: if I tell it right this time. Then the window. Then the behavior, which is the report, the extra hour of work, the call. Then relief, and the next run gets faster.

Should I just stop seeking their approval?

You have decided that already. Probably more than once, probably in a car. The decision happens in one system and the chase happens in another. Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does.

Catch is to feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Intercept is to interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. Rewrite is to repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns.

    [INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]

Quietly, to yourself, at the stomach tightening:

Stomach tight. That is the old pull, familiar, not news. I am not reporting yet.

Then ask the one question: am I telling them because I want them to know, or because I want the sentence?

    [FIELD ASSIGNMENT]

For one month, every piece of news gets told to someone else first. Someone whose approval arrives on time. Sit with how flat that feels. Flat is the body learning to read calm.

A day later, decide whether the parent hears it at all. Either answer is allowed. The day is the repetition.

Count the days you did not call to report. Each one counts, including the ones where you called the next morning.

Expect the on-time approval to keep feeling like nothing for a while. It takes repetitions before the body reads it as something. That part is slower than the recognition, and it is the actual work.

Is it wrong to still want it?

No. Wanting a parent's approval is not the pattern. The pattern is the chase that fires before you have decided anything, and the extra hour it costs you each time. You can want the sentence and still not dial.

There is no age it is supposed to stop. A sequence does not expire. It stops being run, one repetition at a time, or it keeps running at fifty exactly as it ran at fifteen.

This page cannot tell you whether the sentence will ever come. The method does not need to know. The window opens whether or not they change, which is the only reason it is worth working on.

Then check the other rooms. The manager who never says well done. The friend who reads and does not reply. The partner who gives less the more you give. If the list has one shape, the parent is where it is loudest, not where it lives. The core file describes the same pull everywhere else.

This is not who you are. It is a pattern running. Those are different things, and the difference is the entire method.

    THE FULL FILE

This page is one room. Attraction to Harm is one of nine files in the archive and it runs in all of them, which is the fastest way to tell a pattern from a situation. The full file describes the same circuit outside this arena entirely.

    Questions people ask about this

Why do I keep chasing approval from a parent who never gives it?

Because approval that comes rarely and without warning holds a behavior harder than approval that comes every time. The crumb keeps the chase alive. Steady approval from others produces no charge, so it feels like it does not count.

Why is my parent's approval so important to me?

Theirs was the first grade, and it never arrived in full. The body learned to read the wait as the thing that matters. That is a sequence, not a verdict on you or on them.

Should I just stop seeking their approval?

Deciding to stop has not worked, because the chase fires before the decision. What works is a wait between the signal and the call, repeated until it is easier to reach than dialing.

What is the body signal for this pattern?

Often a tightening low in the stomach, the voice going up, the news being rehearsed before you have said hello. It arrives three to seven seconds before the report begins. That gap is the window.

    What is the window?

The few seconds between the body signal and the behavior. Here the behavior is the call, the report, the extra hour of work. Three to seven seconds is a working figure you train toward, not a fixed number.

What do I say to myself before I call them?

Stomach tight. That is the old pull, familiar, not news. I am not reporting yet. Then ask whether you want them to know, or whether you want the sentence.

Why doesn't my partner's approval feel like enough?

Because it arrives on time. On-time approval produces no spike, so the body reads it as not counting. With repetitions, it starts to register. That is slow and it is the work.

At what age should I stop looking for my parents' approval?

There is no age. A sequence does not expire on a birthday. It stops being run one repetition at a time, or it keeps running the same way at every age.

Is this the same as hating it when my parents say they are proud of me?

No. That is Compliment Deflection: the approval arrives and you send it back. This page is for when it does not arrive and you go back for more. They can run in the same family.

Do I need to figure out why my parent is like this?

No. Looking at where a pattern was learned is optional work between moments, never required. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer. The window works without a history.

    Is this a clinical label?

No. This archive makes no clinical claims. It describes an observed sequence with a body signal and a timing. Clinical questions belong with a clinician.

    THE ARCHIVES

The same pull picks partners, managers and friends who withhold. If you want to know whether this is your primary pattern or one covering for another, the assessment names it.

The window is the gap between the first signal in your body and the behavior. Three to seven seconds is a working figure for that gap. It is drawn from what people report about their own sequences, not from a stopwatch in a laboratory. Some sequences run at the short end and some at the long, and the same person will find it varies. It is the scale you train toward after Catch. Catch is the first move: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Your body is not obliged to keep to that number.
