Why do I push my teenager away?

PATTERN: The Testing Pattern  /  ARENA: PARENTING AND FAMILY

You went cold first, before they did. Half a step, not a scene, and you would not have called it anything if you had not caught yourself doing it three times in a fortnight.

This is The Testing Pattern in the room where it is hardest to admit, because the other person is fifteen and did not sign up to be tested by anybody.

    Before anything else

One thing outranks the rest of this page. If the cold has become something you would not want described back to you, or if you have frightened yourself with what you said, that is a sentence to act on rather than to sit with.

In the United States: Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline, call or text 1-800-422-4453, staffed around the clock and used by parents ringing about themselves. 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, call or text 988. Emergency services: 911.

Asking is not an admission of anything, and pattern work is not a substitute for it.

    What is actually running

A question, asked in evidence rather than in words. Not whether they love you, which you know, but when they stop. What happens if you are less available. Whether the distance registers at all.

So the sharp comment goes in. Or the offer is not made this time. Or the room is left slightly early. Each one is small enough to deny and precise enough to produce a result.

And the result is worthless, which is the part that keeps it running. If they come after you, you learn they respond to withdrawal, which the sequence discounts immediately. If they do not, you learn what happens when a teenager is given space, which is what teenagers do with space.

You are not withholding to punish them. You are asking a question in the only form this sequence trusts.

Why it fires after the good days

Check the timing on the last three and it will not be after a row. It will be after the drive where they talked, the evening they sat in the kitchen instead of upstairs, the joke that was for you.

A good day raises the position and gives it further to fall. The better it gets, the more urgent it becomes to find out what it is made of, which is why the closest week of the year is followed by the coldest Tuesday.

The phrasings people arrive with are the searcher's own and they are unusually direct:

    • “why do I push my teenager away”
    • “why do I go cold with my kids instead of loud”
    • “am I a bad parent”
    • “why do I snap at my daughter for something I do myself”

The last one is worth reading twice. A great many people running this find the behavior they react to hardest in their child is the one they run themselves, which is information about the reaction rather than about the child.

What happens in the body first

A fast, high charge in the chest, usually at the moment they close a door or answer in one word. Not anger and not hurt exactly. Closer to the second before a question gets asked out loud.

Then the move, and it is quick and deniable. The tone flattens. The offer does not get made. The reply is three words shorter than it would have been an hour ago.

    [MECHANISM]

The fast heart is the first domino. It arrives three to seven seconds before the withdrawal.

The withdrawal is the behavior, and at this size nobody would call it one. That is exactly why it has run for two years without being caught.

The thought that follows, fine, they clearly do not want to talk, is not the cause. It is the narration, and it arrives after the temperature has already dropped.

The relief when they notice is the reinforcement. It lasts about a day, and then the position is higher again, and the next one is set slightly larger.

What it looks like from where they are standing

From their side there is no question being asked. There is a parent who was warm on Sunday and is not on Wednesday, for no reason they can identify, which is precisely the condition that teaches a person to stop relying on the temperature.

That is the cost and it is worth stating without softening. A teenager cannot see a sequence. They can only see weather, and weather that changes without cause is the thing people learn to protect themselves from.

    How to interrupt it

Not by resolving to be warmer, which you have resolved, several times, usually at eleven at night after a door closed. Insight does not rewire. Repetition does.

The window is three to seven seconds wide. It opens at the charge, when the door closes or the answer comes back short, and it closes when your tone drops.

    [INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]

Out loud, quietly, to yourself, in the hall or the car:

Heart is going. This is a test, not their verdict. I am not going cold.

Then do the small opposite thing inside the hour, with no reference to any of it. Make the offer you were about to withhold. Say the ordinary sentence in the ordinary voice.

    [REWRITE FRAME]

Ask the question in words, once, to an adult rather than to your child. A partner, a friend, anybody who is not fifteen.

Am I still somebody they want around. That is the actual question and a teenager is the wrong person to have answering it.

Then let their distance be theirs. It is age-appropriate, it is not a referendum on you, and it is not evidence in a case.

A failed interruption is still an interrupted sequence. Going cold and then coming back forty minutes later at normal temperature is a repetition, and the coming back is what they will actually remember.

Is this normal parenting, or is this a pattern running?

Every parent of a teenager withdraws sometimes, and being hurt by a closed door is not a sequence. The test is the shape rather than the fact.

This one arrives after the good days rather than the difficult ones, it produces something small and deniable rather than a conversation, and it escalates when it does not get a response. Ordinary hurt does not have that arc.

That is worth checking directly rather than taking on trust, and the place to check it is the file this page comes from, where the same circuit is described with no child in it at all.

This is not who you are. It is a pattern running. Those are different things, and the difference is the entire method.

    THE FULL FILE

This page is one room. The Testing Pattern is one of nine files in the archive and it runs in all of them, which is the fastest way to tell a pattern from a situation. The full file describes the same circuit outside this arena entirely.

    Questions people ask about this

Why do I push my teenager away?

Because a question is being asked in evidence rather than in words: not whether they love you, but when they stop. The sharp comment or the withheld offer produces a result, and the result is worthless whichever way it comes back.

Why does it happen after a good day?

Because a good day raises the position and gives it further to fall. The better it gets, the more urgent it becomes to find out what it is made of, which is why the closest week is followed by the coldest Tuesday.

    What is the body signal?

A fast, high charge in the chest when they close a door or answer in one word. Not anger and not hurt exactly, closer to the second before a question is asked out loud. The withdrawal follows three to seven seconds later.

Why do I go cold rather than shout?

Because cold is deniable and a shout is not. At this size nobody would call it a behavior, including you, which is exactly why it has been able to run for two years without being caught.

Are they doing it too, or is it me?

Ordinary adolescent separation looks similar and is not this. The difference is the arc: this arrives after the good days, produces something small and deniable, and escalates when it gets no response.

What does it look like from their side?

Weather. A parent who was warm on Sunday and is not on Wednesday, for no reason they can identify. Weather that changes without cause is what teaches a person to stop relying on the temperature.

Why do I react hardest to the thing I do myself?

Most people running this notice that, and it is information about the reaction rather than about the child. Recognising your own sequence in somebody else produces a sharper response than the behavior alone would.

    Am I a bad parent?

That is a verdict and this method does not issue them. What can be examined is a sequence: the charge, the withdrawal, the deniable size, the escalation. A sequence has a gap in it and a verdict does not.

How do I interrupt it in the moment?

Name the charge, quietly, in the hall or the car, then do the small opposite thing inside the hour with no reference to any of it. Make the offer you were about to withhold. The size is the point.

Should I explain this to them?

No. A teenager explained to themselves, or handed a parent's mechanism to hold, receives a verdict however it is delivered. Ask the question in words to an adult instead. They are the wrong person to be answering it.

What if I have already done real damage?

This page will not tell you what has or has not landed, because it does not know them. What it can say is that the return at normal temperature is the repetition, it is available today, and late catches are how almost everybody starts.

What if I have frightened myself?

Then that comes first. Childhelp, 1-800-422-4453, is used by parents ringing about themselves. 988 for crisis support. Emergency services, 911. Pattern work is not a substitute and it is not more urgent.
