Why do my coworkers leave me out?
The next time a coworker asks you to cover, say: I can look at it this afternoon.
PATTERN: The Draining Bond / ARENA: WORK AND CAREER
They went to lunch without you again. You found out from the photos. That same morning, two of them asked you to cover a task, and you said yes before they had finished.
This is The Draining Bond at work, the pattern where the reasoning arrives at the same answer no matter what the numbers were. Here the answer is that the team's problems are yours to carry. Read the body section first. Then notice the weight the next time someone asks you for something.
What happens in my body when I see them go without me?
The body signal is what you feel as the pattern starts. On this file it is a weight across the shoulders. It comes when the group heads out, and it comes again when someone stops at your desk with a request.
[MECHANISM]
The cue is the first thing that sets it off: a request, a sigh from the next desk, a deadline that is not yours.
The weight arrives three to seven seconds before the yes. Those seconds are the window, the short stretch before the behavior.
The yes brings relief and a thank you. That relief is the reward. It keeps you in the useful seat, which is not the same seat as the one at lunch.
Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measurement. It is short. It is enough to hold one request until the afternoon.
Why am I asked for help but not asked along?
This page cannot see your coworkers and passes no verdict on them. It can see one shape. When one person carries the team's loose ends, that person becomes a role. The role is needed. The role gets thanked.
A role is not a person to have lunch with. And the role keeps you busy at the exact moment the group is leaving. You are finishing someone's task while they put on their coats.
You are inside every problem on the team and outside every plan.
How do I change it?
Not by working harder to earn a place. That is the same answer the pattern always reaches. Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does.
Catch is to feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Intercept is to interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. The usual response is the quick yes. The different action is one small limit, and one plain ask.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
When the request lands and the shoulders go heavy, quietly to yourself:
There is the weight. The math is starting. I am not solving it right now.
Then say out loud: I can look at it this afternoon. And when the group heads out, ask one person: where are you going? Mind if I come?
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
For two weeks, no request gets a same-minute yes. Each one gets: I can look at it this afternoon.
Once a week, ask to join one plan, plainly and once. Or make one: lunch on Thursday, who is in?
Count the limits held and the asks made. Each one is a full repetition, whatever the answer.
Rewrite is to repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. A yes that slips out, followed by actually, this afternoon, still counts.
Why do my coworkers leave me out?
There can be many reasons, and most of them this page cannot see. One it can see is the role. If you are the person who handles things, you may be busy handling them when the plans are made. You may never ask to join, because asking for something feels like a cost.
That part is yours to change. Hold one request until later. Ask to come along once. Then look at what happens, as a record.
Is this the team, or is this a pattern running?
Some exclusion is not a pattern question. If you are left out because of your race, sex, age, disability or religion, that is a matter for workplace rules and for someone outside the team. Treat it that way.
Otherwise, check the other rooms. Are you the one friends call to fix things, and the one they forget to invite? Does the same quick yes run with family? Then work is where it shows, not where it lives.
Between moments, you can look at where you learned that being useful was the price of a place, if you want to. Pattern Archaeology is that optional work. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer. The core file on this pattern is at /patterns/why-cant-i-leave-a-relationship-that-drains-me.
This is not who you are. It is a pattern running. Those are different things, and the difference is the entire method.
THE FULL FILE
This page is one room. The Draining Bond is one of nine files in the archive and it runs in all of them, which is the fastest way to tell a pattern from a situation. The full file describes the same circuit outside this arena entirely.

Why am I always excluded at work?
This page cannot see your team. It can see that a person who carries the team's loose ends becomes a role, and a role gets thanked rather than asked along.
Why do my coworkers only talk to me when they need something?
Because the requests are where you are reliably found. The quick yes trains the team to bring you tasks. Hold one request until later and see what else gets said.
Should I just work harder so they like me?
That is the same answer the pattern always reaches. More work deepens the role. A small limit and one plain ask are the different action.
What is the body signal here?
A weight across the shoulders when a request lands or the group heads out. It is what you feel as the pattern starts, before the yes.
What do I say when someone asks me to cover for them?
I can look at it this afternoon. Then stop talking. It is not a no. It is a delay, and the delay is the different action.
How do I ask to join without feeling awkward?
Ask plainly and once: where are you going, mind if I come? The awkward feeling is the weight. Notice it and ask anyway. The ask is the repetition, whatever the answer.
Why do I feel invisible at work?
A role can be seen all day and still not be seen as a person. The way out is small: one limit, one ask, one true thing said about your own week.
What if I am left out on purpose?
If it is tied to your race, sex, age, disability or religion, it is a workplace matter, not a pattern one. Treat it that way and talk to someone outside the team.
Why does being left out hurt so much?
Because you are giving to the team at the same time. The cost and the exclusion land together. Changing the giving is the part you can practise.
Is this a clinical claim?
No. This archive makes no clinical claims and names nothing you have. It describes an observed sequence with a body signal and a timing. Clinical questions belong with a clinician.
THE ARCHIVES
The same quick yes may run with friends, with family and with a partner. If you want to know whether The Draining Bond is your primary pattern, the one that runs most often, the assessment names it, and it costs nothing.
