FILE: ARCH-ARN-083 / STATUS: ACTIVE
Why am I not good enough for my mom?
For two weeks, write down every good thing your mom says, word for word, and do not argue with it.
PATTERN: Compliment Deflection / ARENA: PARENTING AND FAMILY
You keep a record of not enough. Every mark, every job, every choice gets checked against it. When your mom says something good, it slides off. When she says something hard, it goes straight in. If you are scared at home, read the box below first.
This page cannot tell you what your mom thinks or means. It works on the part that is yours. Often that part is Compliment Deflection. Compliment Deflection is the pattern where something good lands and the body treats it as exposure. The core file, Why can't I take a compliment?, covers it everywhere.
What if I am scared at home?
One thing on this page outranks the rest. If someone at home hits you, threatens you, or makes you afraid, or if you have thought about hurting yourself, that is not a pattern question. Talk to a person today.
In the United States:
Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline. Call or text 1-800-422-4453, staffed around the clock. It is used by parents ringing about themselves, and you can ring for advice without making an allegation.
988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.
Crisis Text Line. Text HOME to 741741, if a call is the part you cannot do.
You can call or text these yourself, at any age. You do not need anyone's permission, and you do not have to be sure it is bad enough.
If none of that is true, read on. The rest of this page is about the record you keep.
Why does her praise slide off and her criticism stick?
Because the record only accepts one kind of entry. Hard words agree with it, so they file easily. Good words would change it, and change feels like exposure. The body sends them back with a shrug, a joke, or a quick she has to say that.
This does not mean her hard words were fair, or that her good words were true. This page cannot judge either. It means the filing is uneven, and the filing is the part you can work on.
You are not short of evidence that you are good enough. You are sending the evidence back before it reaches the file.
What happens in my body when she says something good?
The body signal is what you feel as the pattern starts. Here it is usually heat in the face, a tight throat, an urge to look away or leave the room.
[MECHANISM]
The cue, the first thing that sets it off, is the good word. Heat in the face follows.
A thought arrives fast: she does not mean it, or it does not count.
The window is the few seconds between the heat and the shrug. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measurement.
The behavior is the shrug, the joke, the change of subject. Relief follows, and the record stays as it was.
The circuit is that whole sequence of steps. Each time it ends in relief, the record gets a little harder to change.
How do I stop sending the good words back?
Not by deciding you are good enough. You have tried that, and the record held. Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does.
Catch is to feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Intercept is to interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. Rewrite is to repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
Quietly, at the heat in the face:
Heat is up. This is exposure, not a mistake. Thank you, and nothing after it.
Then say thank you, Mom, out loud, and stop.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
Keep a second record for two weeks. Write down every good thing she says, word for word, the day she says it.
Do not argue with the entries. Do not add but. Just file them.
At the end, read both records side by side. Notice which one you have been keeping in full.
Why am I not good enough for my mom?
This page cannot answer that, and it will not guess at her. What it can say is that not good enough is a record, not a fact. A record is built from entries. If only the hard ones get filed, it will always read the same way. Start filing the good ones too, in her exact words, and read what the record says then.
What if she really does not say anything good?
Then your second record may stay short, and that is worth knowing too. A short list is information about the room, not a verdict on you.
Look at the other rooms. When a teacher, a friend, or a boss says you did well, does it slide off the same way? If it does, the deflection runs everywhere, not only at home. The core file describes it in every room. Start there, with the people who do say it.
Is this the truth about me, or is this a pattern running?
A record that only accepts one kind of entry is not the truth. It is a filing habit, and a habit can be filed differently.
Between moments, you can look at where this was learned, if you want to. SOURCE UNKNOWN is also a complete answer. The window works without the history.
This is not who you are. It is a pattern running. Those are different things, and the difference is the entire method.
THE FULL FILE
This page is one room. Compliment Deflection is one of nine files in the archive and it runs in all of them, which is the fastest way to tell a pattern from a situation. The full file describes the same circuit outside this arena entirely.

Why am I not good enough for my mom?
This page cannot judge what your mom thinks. It can say that not good enough is a record, not a fact, and that the good entries are often sent back before they are filed.
Why does her criticism stick but her praise does not?
Hard words agree with the record, so they file easily. Good words would change it, and the body treats that as exposure. It sends them back with a shrug or a joke.
Why do I feel like nothing I do is enough?
Because every result is checked against a record that only accepts one kind of entry. Start a second record of the good things said, word for word, and read the two side by side.
What do I say when my mom says something nice?
Thank you, Mom. Then stop. No but, no joke, no reason it does not count. You do not have to believe it to say it.
What if my mom never says anything good?
Then a short list is information about the room, not a verdict on you. Check whether praise from teachers, friends or a boss slides off the same way. Start the practice with them.
What is the body signal here?
Usually heat in the face, a tight throat, an urge to look away. It arrives a few seconds before the shrug or the joke. That stretch is the window.
What is the window?
The few seconds between the body signal and the deflection. Three to seven seconds is a working figure you train toward, not a fixed number.
What if I am scared of someone at home?
Then this is not a pattern question first. Call or text Childhelp, 988 or the Crisis Text Line, listed in the box near the top. You can do it at any age.
Do I need to know where this started?
No. Looking at where a pattern was learned is optional work between moments, never required. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer.
Is this a clinical label?
No. This archive makes no clinical claims and names nothing you have. It describes an observed sequence with a body signal and a timing.
THE ARCHIVES
The same reflex can fire at school, at work and with friends. If you want to know whether this is your primary pattern or one covering for another, the assessment names it.
