Why do I quit jobs the moment they start going well?

PATTERN: The Disappearing Pattern  /  ARENA: WORK AND CAREER

You left three months after the promotion. Not after a bad quarter, not after a falling out, not after anything you could put in the resignation conversation, and the timing has never once been mentioned by anybody.

This is The Disappearing Pattern, at a desk. It is the withdrawal that follows closeness rather than conflict, and a job is a relationship with a payroll number attached.

Why do I want to leave the moment things go well?

Because going well means being known here, and being known is the condition this sequence exists to end. Three months in you are new and nobody has an accurate picture of you. Three years in they do, and an accurate picture is a thing that can be disappointed.

So the promotion is not a reward in this system. It is a raise in exposure. More people looking, a longer drop, an expectation with your name written on it, and the moment it lands the reading changes from arrival to risk.

Watch the timing rather than the reasons. Line up your last three departures and ask what happened in the eight weeks before each one. If the answer is a promotion, a good review, a project that went right, or somebody senior saying they were glad you were here, you are not looking at a series of unfortunate jobs.

You are not leaving before it goes wrong. You are leaving because it went right.

Is this the same as sabotaging an interview?

No, and the separation is worth making carefully, because the two get filed together and they are different sequences with different markers.

The interview version fires while you are trying to get the thing. Its marker is a scan: a restless charge, attention sliding off the good news, a search for what is wrong with it. It costs you the offer.

This one fires once you already have it and people here know who you are. Its marker is the opposite of a charge. A flat band across the chest when your name is attached to something, and a distinct relief in imagining being gone. Nothing about that is excitement. It is a withdrawal, and it costs you the years.

The phrasings people arrive with describe the timing precisely, and they are the searcher's own:

    • “why do I quit jobs the moment they start going well”
    • “why do I go quiet after an interview goes well”
    • “why do I turn down opportunities I wanted”
    • “I got the promotion and started looking for what was wrong with it”

If you recognise both, they are running in sequence rather than competing, and it is worth knowing which one is on the day you are trying to catch it.

What happens in my body before I start looking?

A band across the chest, usually when something makes the belonging explicit. Your name on the org chart. Being asked about next year. Somebody saying we would be lost without you, which lands as a weight rather than as a compliment.

Then the behavior, and the behavior is tiny. A listing opened at eleven at night. A recruiter answered after eight months of ignoring them. A document updated for no reason. Nobody would call any of that quitting, which is exactly why it has never been caught.

    [MECHANISM]

The chest band is the first domino. It arrives three to seven seconds before the tab opens.

The thought that follows, I have learned everything here, I need a new challenge, this place is not what it was, is not the cause. It is the narration.

You are not constructing that story. You are receiving one, and it will be word for word the same story you received at the last job.

The relief when the tab is open is the reinforcement. An exit that exists is an exit that does not have to be used, and having one available lowers the band immediately.

Why do I go quiet before I go?

Because the withdrawal starts long before the resignation and it starts in the relationships rather than in the work. The output stays fine. What stops is the volunteering, the lunches, the version of you that had opinions in the meeting.

People around you usually register it before you do, and they read it as unhappiness with them, which it is not. By the time the conversation happens you have been gone internally for four months, which is why the announcement lands as a surprise to everybody except you.

In the room where this was installed, being counted on was not safe. Somebody depended on you and the dependence had a cost, or being needed was the thing that arrived just before something got taken away. A child who learned that keeps an exit within reach as a matter of policy.

That is a mechanism rather than a character report, and mechanisms can be interrupted.

How do I stay somewhere longer than eighteen months?

Not by deciding to commit. You have decided that on the first day of each of the last three jobs. Insight does not rewire. Repetition does.

The window opens at the band, at the moment the belonging becomes explicit, and it closes when the first small exit move happens. That is months before the resignation, which is the only place this is catchable at all.

    [INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]

Out loud, quietly, when the band arrives:

There is the band. This is the good version, not the wrong one. I am not opening anything.

Then do the smallest opposite thing inside the hour. Say one sentence in a meeting. Answer a message you would have left. Book something four months out and put it in the calendar.

    [REWRITE FRAME]

Write down, in a calm week, the three conditions that would make leaving the right decision. Real ones, with facts in them.

Then leaving is only lawful when one of those is met. The band is not on the list, and neither is the sentence about a new challenge.

This is not a rule against leaving. It is a rule that the decision gets made by you rather than by the band.

And a failed interruption is still an interrupted sequence. Noticing the band on the night you accepted the other offer is a repetition, and it makes the next one earlier.

Is this ambition, or is this a pattern running?

The test is what the moves are aimed at. Ambition points somewhere. It has a shape across the years, it accumulates, and each step is legible as a step toward something you can name.

This one points away. The moves arrive on the same cue rather than on an opportunity, they often cost money or seniority, and the destination is usually whatever was available at the moment the band was loudest. Ambition does not fire on a good review.

That is worth checking directly rather than taking on trust, and the place to check it is the file this page comes from, where the same circuit is described with no employer in it at all.

This is not who you are. It is a pattern running. Those are different things, and the difference is the entire method.

    THE FULL FILE

This page is one room. The Disappearing Pattern is one of nine files in the archive and it runs in all of them, which is the fastest way to tell a pattern from a situation. The full file describes the same circuit outside this arena entirely.

    Questions people ask about this

Why do I quit jobs the moment they start going well?

Because going well means being known there, and being known is the condition this sequence exists to end. A promotion reads as a raise in exposure rather than as a reward, and the leaving follows the belonging rather than any trouble.

Why do I go quiet after an interview goes well?

Same circuit, earlier in the sequence. A good interview makes the belonging plausible, and the band arrives before the offer does. The follow-up that never gets sent is the behavior, and it is small enough to look like forgetting.

Is this the same as sabotaging interviews?

No. That one fires while you are trying to get the thing and its marker is a restless scan. This one fires once you have it and its marker is a flat band across the chest with relief attached to the idea of being gone.

What is the body signal before I start looking?

A band across the chest when the belonging becomes explicit: your name on the chart, a question about next year, somebody saying they would be lost without you. The tab opens three to seven seconds later.

Why does being told I am valued make me want to leave?

Because it lands as a weight rather than as a compliment. It makes the dependence explicit, and dependence is the exact reading this sequence was built to end. It is not ingratitude and it is not a verdict on the people saying it.

Why do I get quiet months before I resign?

Because the withdrawal starts in the relationships rather than the work. The output stays fine and the volunteering stops. By the time you hand in notice you have been gone internally for four months, which is why it surprises everybody but you.

    Is this ambition?

Ambition points somewhere and accumulates across the years. This points away: the moves arrive on a good review rather than an opportunity, they often cost money or seniority, and the destination is whatever was available at the time.

How do I stay somewhere longer than eighteen months?

Catch the band and do the smallest opposite thing inside the hour: one sentence in a meeting, one message answered, one thing booked four months out. The decision to commit has never survived a Tuesday, and a repetition does not need to.

What if the job genuinely is wrong for me?

Then it will still be wrong when you check it against conditions written down in a calm week. That is the point of writing them: leaving stays available, and the decision gets made by you rather than by the band.

Why is my CV a list of good years that ended?

Because each one ended at the same point in its arc rather than at a low point. Read the eight weeks before each departure rather than the last month. The eight weeks usually rhyme, and the resignation reasons never do.

Why do I feel relief the moment I hand in notice?

Because the exposure ends at that moment rather than at the leaving date. The relief is the reinforcement and it is what has made this look, every single time, like the right decision.

How long does it take to change?

The interrupt practice runs forty days for most people. Forty days is the shape of the work rather than a deadline, and catching the band on a night you opened the listings anyway counts as a repetition.
