How do I tell someone I feel used?
Write your one sentence on paper today: what you have been doing, what it costs, what changes.
PATTERN: The Draining Bond / ARENA: SELF, BODY AND HEALTH
You have rehearsed the sentence for weeks. In the shower it is clear and calm. In the room it shrinks to a joke, or to nothing. Write it down before you try again.
This is The Draining Bond at the moment of speech. The Draining Bond is the pattern where the reasoning arrives at the same answer no matter what the numbers were. Here the answer is: not now, not like this, maybe it is fine. Read the first section before you plan the talk.
One thing comes before the rest of this page. If this person has pressured you into sex or controls your money, a talk is not the first step. The same is true if you are afraid of their reaction.
Talk to someone outside it first. In the United States:
988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.
The National Domestic Violence Hotline. Call 1-800-799-7233 or text START to 88788. Confidential, around the clock, and they talk about safety planning as well as leaving.
You do not owe anyone a conversation that is not safe to have.
Why is it so hard to say that I feel used?
Because saying it claims that your cost counts. This pattern treats that claim as the one thing you must never make. So the guilt arrives on schedule, the moment you open your mouth, whatever you were about to say.
Then the reasons arrive. They have a lot on. Maybe you offered too much. It would sound petty. Every reason ends in the same place: say nothing, keep giving. That fixed answer is the pattern, not a judgment.
There is a second trap. Held in long enough, the sentence stops being a request and turns into a charge. When it finally comes out, it comes out as you always do this. That version is easy to argue with, and the talk becomes about the charge, not about the cost.
You have not been silent because it does not matter. You have been silent because it matters, and saying it feels like taking something.
What happens in my body before I say it?
The body signal is what you feel as the pattern starts. On this file it is often weight. Heaviness across the shoulders, a chest that sinks, a voice that goes small. It arrives as soon as you picture saying the words.
[MECHANISM]
The weight is the first step. It arrives three to seven seconds before the sentence gets softened or dropped.
The cue, the first thing that sets it off, is the moment the talk becomes real. Their face, a pause in the talk, the words I need to tell you something.
Dropping the sentence ends the weight at once. That relief is the reward, and it is why the next attempt is harder.
The window is the few seconds between that weight and the retreat. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measurement. It is long enough to say one prepared sentence.
What do I actually say?
Used is a verdict. It is a claim about their intent, and intent is the one thing you cannot see. A verdict starts an argument. A record does not. So say what you have been doing, what it costs, and what changes.
Catch is to feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Intercept is to interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. Here the usual response is the retreat. The different action is one sentence, said once.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
Before you speak, quietly:
There is the weight. I am not solving their side of it. One small limit, said plainly.
Then say the sentence you prepared, and stop.
[REWRITE FRAME]
"You always use me" becomes "I have been saying yes to more than I can give."
"You never do anything for me" becomes "I need this to go both ways more often."
"It's fine, forget it" becomes "It is not fine for me, and I want to change it."
After the sentence, no list of examples unless they ask.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
Write your sentence on paper. One or two lines, no more.
Say it out loud once a day for three days, alone.
Then say it to them, in person or by message, whichever you can do.
Rewrite is to repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. If the sentence came out as a joke, say the real one the next day. That still counts.
Between moments, you can look at where you learned that your cost does not count, if you want to. SOURCE UNKNOWN is also a complete answer. The talk does not need the history.
How do I tell someone I feel used?
Say the record, not the verdict. Pick a quiet time, not the middle of a new request. Then one sentence: I have been doing more than I can give, and I need it to change. Name one thing that changes, such as no more lifts on weekdays. Then stop talking. Their reply is information. It is not yours to manage.
How do I tell a friend I feel used?
The same sentence, with one addition. Say that you want the friendship, if you do. I like being your friend, and I have been doing more than I can give. A friend can hear a cost when it is not a charge. Then hold the one change you named, the next time they ask. The holding matters more than the talk.
How do I tell a guy I feel used?
First, check the block at the top of this page. If you are afraid of his reply, start there. If you are not, the sentence is the same. I want more than this, and I am not going to keep giving what I have been giving. You cannot control his answer. You can control whether the sentence gets said, and what you do the day after.
Is this them, or is this a pattern running?
Sometimes it is them. Some people take more than they give. You are allowed to step back from them without proving it to anyone.
The pattern is different. It shows up in more than one room. Check the others. Do you swallow the same sentence with a parent, at work, with a friend? Then this is where the pattern is loudest, not where it lives. The core file on it is at /patterns/why-cant-i-leave-a-relationship-that-drains-me.
This is not who you are. It is a pattern running. Those are different things, and the difference is the entire method.
THE FULL FILE
This page is one room. The Draining Bond is one of nine files in the archive and it runs in all of them, which is the fastest way to tell a pattern from a situation. The full file describes the same circuit outside this arena entirely.

Should I tell someone I feel used?
If it is safe, yes. Saying it once, plainly, is better than carrying it until it comes out as a charge. Their reply is information either way.
Why can't I get the words out?
Because the pattern treats your cost as something that must not count. The weight arrives as soon as you picture saying it, and dropping the sentence ends the weight.
What do I say instead of you are using me?
Say the record. I have been doing more than I can give, and I need it to change. Then name one thing that changes.
Should I list every example?
No. A list turns the talk into a trial. Give one sentence. Give one example only if they ask.
Is it better to say it by text?
Say it whichever way you can actually do. A short message that gets sent beats a perfect talk that never happens.
What if they get angry?
Their reply is theirs. You can repeat your sentence once and end the talk. If their anger makes you afraid, the routes at the top of this page come first.
What if they say I offered?
You may have. That can be true and the cost can still be real. I did offer, and I cannot keep offering this much.
What is the body signal here?
Often a weight across the shoulders and a voice that goes small, as soon as you picture saying the words. It is what you feel as the pattern starts.
Why do I feel guilty after saying it?
The guilt arrives on schedule, whenever you claim your cost counts. It is not a sign you were unkind. It is the pattern reporting in.
What do I do after the talk?
Hold the one change you named the next time they ask. The talk is one event. The holding is the repetition, and the repetition is the work.
Is this a clinical claim?
No. This archive makes no clinical claims and names nothing you have. It describes an observed sequence with a body signal and a timing. Clinical questions belong with a clinician.
THE ARCHIVES
The same swallowed sentence may show up with family, at work and with friends. If you want to know whether this is your primary pattern, the one that runs most often, the assessment names it, and it costs nothing.
