Why do I feel like I don't deserve to be happy?
The next time a good moment lands, name the heat and say thank you to it, with nothing after.
PATTERN: Compliment Deflection / ARENA: SELF, BODY AND HEALTH
A good evening arrives and you flinch. The food is good. The people are kind. Nothing is wrong. And a quiet voice says this is not yours to keep.
This is Compliment Deflection, the pattern where something good lands and the body treats it as exposure. Here the good thing is not a sentence from someone else. It is your own good day. Read the section on the body first, then the moves. They work on happiness the same way they work on praise.
One reading of this page outranks the rest of it. If not deserving to be happy has become not wanting to be here, this is not the page for it. Say it to a person tonight.

Why does a good day feel like something I have to give back?
Because a good day is a position, and a position can be lost. The moment you are happy, there is now a height to fall from. Sending the happiness back removes the height. You cannot lose what you never let in.
The pattern does this with praise. Someone says you did well, and you point to the flaw. It does the same thing with a good evening. You enjoy it, and then you find the reason you should not.
The reason changes. Someone else has it harder. You have not done enough yet. It will not last. The move underneath is always the same. Something good has landed, and it has to be returned before it settles.
It is not that you do not want to be happy. It is that being happy feels like standing in full view.
What happens in my body when something good lands?
The body signal is what you feel as the pattern starts. Here it is often heat in the face, or a tight squirm across the chest. Sometimes it is a sudden need to check the phone, tidy something, or leave the room.
[MECHANISM]
The heat is the first step. It arrives three to seven seconds before the thought that you do not deserve this.
Happiness is exposure. The body treats being visibly well with the same alarm it uses for being looked at closely.
The thought ends the exposure. The relief that follows is the reward, and the reward is why the thought comes faster next time.
The window is the few seconds between that signal and the thought that takes the good thing away. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measurement. It is where the work happens.
How do I stop sending the good thing back?
Not by arguing that you deserve it. You have tried that, and the verdict still came. Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does.
Catch is to feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Intercept is to interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. Here the different action is to say thank you to the moment, and add nothing after it.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
Quietly, to yourself:
Heat is up. This is exposure, not a mistake.
Thank you. Full stop. Nothing after it.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
For one week, write down one good moment each night. One sentence, plain.
Do not add the reason it did not count. No but, no someone else has it worse.
Count the nights you managed it. Each one is a full repetition.
Rewrite is to repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. A night where the verdict came anyway, and you wrote the sentence after it, still counts.
Between moments, you can look at where this was learned, if you want to. SOURCE UNKNOWN is also a complete answer. The practice does not need the history.
Why do I feel like I don't deserve to be happy?
Because the good thing reads as exposure, and the thought that you do not deserve it is the exit. It is not a measured judgment of your life. It is the reflex that ends the moment. You can check this. The verdict arrives at the same speed whether the day was earned or not. A real judgment would take longer.
Why do I keep feeling like I don't deserve to be happy?
Because each time the thought ends the moment, the body gets relief, and relief is the reward. A rewarded sequence runs again. So the thought is not getting truer. It is getting faster. Name the heat the next time it comes, and leave the good thing where it is for three breaths.
Is this how I am, or is this a pattern running?
Some heaviness has a cause this page does not cover. If the low feeling stays for weeks, or sleep and food have changed, that is a question for a doctor. This page does not answer it.
The pattern is different. It fires at the good moment, with the same heat, and then it stops. Check the other rooms. Do you send back praise at work, or a partner's kind words? Then the good day is only the loudest place it runs. The file this page comes from describes the same reflex everywhere else.
This is not who you are. It is a pattern running. Those are different things, and the difference is the entire method.
THE FULL FILE
This page is one room. Compliment Deflection is one of nine files in the archive and it runs in all of them, which is the fastest way to tell a pattern from a situation. The full file describes the same circuit outside this arena entirely.

Why do I feel like I don't deserve to be happy?
Because something good landing reads to the body as exposure. The thought that you do not deserve it ends the exposure. It is a reflex, not a ruling on your life.
Why do I always feel guilty when I am happy?
The guilt is the exit the pattern uses. It turns a good moment into a reason to step back. The relief of stepping back is why it comes again.
Is this Compliment Deflection if nobody complimented me?
Yes. The pattern is about good things landing, not only words. Your own good day is a good thing landing, and the same reflex sends it back.
What is the body signal here?
Often heat in the face or a squirm across the chest, at the good moment. It is what you feel as the pattern starts, a few seconds before the thought.
What do I do when the thought arrives?
Name the heat. Say thank you to the moment, and add nothing after it. Then stay for three breaths before you do anything else.
Why does the thought feel so true?
Because it arrives with a body signal, and a feeling in the body reads as evidence. The speed is the tell. A real judgment would take longer.
Do I have to find out where this started?
No. You can look between moments if you want to. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer. The practice works without the history.
Why is it worse on the best days?
Because the best days are the most exposure. The higher the good thing, the bigger the height to fall from, and the faster the pattern moves.
What if I really have done something wrong?
Then deal with that thing directly and on its own terms. The pattern is different. It fires on days when nothing was done wrong at all.
Is this a clinical claim?
No. This archive makes no clinical claims and names nothing you have. It describes an observed sequence with a body signal and a timing. Clinical questions belong with a clinician.
THE ARCHIVES
The same reflex sends back praise at work, kind words from a partner and good news from a friend. If you want to know whether this is your primary pattern, the assessment names it.
