Why do I go from 0 to 100 so fast?

Next time the heat comes up, name it and leave the room before you speak.

PATTERN: The Rage Pattern  /  ARENA: SELF, BODY AND HEALTH

You were calm, then you were not. There was no climb in between. One second the room was ordinary. The next you were at full volume, over a sigh, a question, a door.

This is The Rage Pattern, felt from inside your own body. The circuit is the sequence of steps it runs: the cue, the first thing that sets it off, then heat, then the behavior. It runs faster than any decision. Read this page as a record of what the jump really is, and what to do with the first second of it.

Why does it feel like there is nothing in between?

Because the climb happens before you notice it. The jump feels instant from inside. It is not. The level was already high when the cue arrived. You were not at zero. You were at eighty, and the small thing carried you the rest of the way.

Read the hours before it, not the moment. How long since you ate. How much you held in. How short the night was. Each one raises the level, and none of them feels like anger while it happens. So when the jump comes, it looks like it came from nowhere.

You do not go from zero to a hundred. You were never at zero, and nobody could see the number, including you.

What happens in my body in that first second?

Heat first. It comes up through the chest and the neck and into the face. The jaw sets. The hands close. The breath goes short and high. All of it arrives before any thought you would call a choice.

    [MECHANISM]

The heat is the first step. It arrives three to seven seconds before the behavior, the raised voice or the slammed door.

Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measurement. It feels like nothing. It is long enough to act in.

The relief after the outburst is the reward. That relief is why the jump gets faster each time.

The body signal is what you feel as the pattern starts. Here it is the heat. The window is the few seconds between that heat and the first loud word. Those seconds are where the whole practice happens.

How do I stop going from 0 to 100?

Not by deciding to stay calm. You have decided that, and it still went. Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does.

Catch is to feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Intercept is to interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. For this pattern the different action is distance.

    [INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]

    Quietly, at the heat:

Heat is up. This is not the size of the thing. I am not speaking yet.

Then leave the room, for twenty minutes if you can and ten seconds if that is all there is. Cold water on the wrists. Where someone could be hurt, distance is the whole move.

    [FIELD ASSIGNMENT]

For one week, write down every jump at the end of the day. Three things only: the cue, where you felt the heat, and the hour.

Do not grade the entries. Just keep them.

At the end of the week, look for the hour the jumps gather around, if they do.

Rewrite is to repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. A jump you caught halfway, and walked out of, still counts as a repetition.

Between moments, you can look at where this was learned, if you want to. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer. The practice does not need the history.

Why do I go from 0 to 100 so fast?

Because the speed is not in the moment. It is in the level you were carrying when the moment arrived. A low level needs a large cue. A high level needs almost nothing. Being tired, being hungry and holding something in all raise the level. The jump looks fast because you only see its last step.

I go from 0 to 100. What is actually happening?

A sequence is running, and it runs in the same order every time. A cue lands. Heat comes up in the body. A thought arrives that feels like the truth. Then the behavior, then relief. It feels like one jump because each step is fast and the steps are linked. Linked steps can be interrupted. The heat is where to start.

What does it mean when I go from 0 to 100 instantly and react intensely to things?

It means the size of the reaction is set by the level, not by the event. It does not mean something is wrong with who you are. This archive makes no clinical claim about it and names nothing you have. It describes a sequence: the same cue, the same heat, the same few seconds, the same outburst. If that repeats at work, at home and in the car, it is a pattern running.

Is this my temper, or is this a pattern running?

Some jumps have a cause this page does not cover. If something has changed in your body, or you are not sleeping, that is a question for a doctor. This page does not answer it.

The pattern is different. It fires with the same heat over the sigh, the email and the traffic. It fires when you were fine a minute ago. Check the other rooms. If it runs in all of them, the file this page comes from describes the same circuit everywhere.

This is not who you are. It is a pattern running. Those are different things, and the difference is the entire method.

    THE FULL FILE

This page is one room. The Rage Pattern is one of nine files in the archive and it runs in all of them, which is the fastest way to tell a pattern from a situation. The full file describes the same circuit outside this arena entirely.

    Questions people ask about this

Why do I go from 0 to 100 so fast?

Because you were not at zero. The level was already high from the hours before, and the small cue only carried you the rest of the way.

Why do I get angry so quickly?

The heat moves before any decision does. It arrives three to seven seconds ahead of the behavior, which feels like no time at all from inside.

What does it mean to go from 0 to 100?

It names a reaction that seems to have no climb. The climb is there. It happened earlier in the day, where it was harder to see.

Is going from 0 to 100 a personality trait?

This archive does not read it that way. It reads a repeated sequence with a body signal and a timing. A sequence can be interrupted. A trait is a verdict.

    What is the body signal?

Heat through the chest, neck and face. A set jaw, closed hands, short breath. It is what you feel as the pattern starts, before the first loud word.

What do I do in the moment?

Name the heat. Say quietly: this is not the size of the thing, I am not speaking yet. Then leave the room, for twenty minutes if you can.

Why do I feel fine right before I explode?

Because the level rises without feeling like anger. Hunger, a short night and held-in words do not announce themselves. The heat is the first part you can feel.

Why does it happen over such small things?

The small thing is a switch, not a cause. A switch does not have to be the size of what it turns on.

Why do I feel calm right after?

The outburst brings relief, and relief is the reward. That relief is what teaches the sequence to run faster next time.

    Is this a clinical claim?

No. This archive makes no clinical claims and names nothing you have. It describes an observed sequence with a body signal and a timing. Clinical questions belong with a clinician.

    THE ARCHIVES

The same jump happens at work, at home and in traffic. If you want to know whether this is your primary pattern, the one that runs most often, the assessment names it.

The window is the gap between the first signal in your body and the behavior. Three to seven seconds is a working figure for that gap. It is drawn from what people report about their own sequences, not from a stopwatch in a laboratory. Some sequences run at the short end and some at the long, and the same person will find it varies. It is the scale you train toward after Catch. Catch is the first move: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Your body is not obliged to keep to that number.
