Why do I feel like a fraud at work?
Next time you are praised at work, say thank you and nothing after it.
PATTERN: Compliment Deflection / ARENA: WORK AND CAREER
Your manager said the report was strong. You said thanks, then spent the evening sure they had missed something. The praise did not land as praise. It landed as a deadline: the day they work it out. Read this page as a record of that sequence, not a verdict on your work.
This is Compliment Deflection at work. The core move sends praise back the moment it arrives. At work it often goes quiet. You say thanks out loud and hand it back in private, where nobody can see you do it.
What happens in my body when someone praises my work?
Watch the meeting where it happens. Your name comes up for something good. Heat rises up the neck and into the face. The chest goes tight. You look down at the table, or you start explaining who else helped. All of it comes before any thought about whether the praise was fair.
[MECHANISM]
The heat in the face is the first step. It arrives three to seven seconds before the deflection.
Praise at work is exposure with witnesses. The more people in the room, the higher the heat.
Handing the credit away ends the exposure. The relief after it is the reward, and the reward is why it runs again at the next review.
The body signal is what you feel as the pattern starts: the heat and the tight chest. The window is the few seconds between that signal and the deflection. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measurement. Inside it, you have not yet given anything away.
How do I stop handing back the credit?
Not by waiting to feel qualified. That feeling is not on its way. Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does.
Catch is to feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. In the meeting, that means naming the heat as exposure. Intercept is to interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. Here the different action is to accept the credit plainly, in the room.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
Silently, while your name is still in the air:
Heat is up. This is exposure, not a mistake. Thank you, and nothing after it.
Then say thank you and stop. No list of who else helped unless you were asked. No mention of the part you would redo.
Rewrite is to repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. Every meeting where the credit stayed with you is one repetition. Between moments, you can look at where you learned this, if you want to. SOURCE UNKNOWN is also a complete answer.
Why do I feel like a fraud at work?
Because praise creates a position, and a position can be lost. Each good review raises the height you could fall from. The fraud feeling is the pattern pricing that fall in advance. It does not read your results. It fires on good results most of all, because those are the ones that put you in view. The feeling is a signal, not a finding.
Why do I feel fake at work?
Because there is a distance between how you are seen and how you see yourself. Others see the work. You see the effort, the doubt and the near misses. The pattern reads that distance as a lie you are telling. It is not a lie. It is two views of the same work. Only one of them is kept by the pattern.
What do I do when I feel like a fraud at work?
Keep a plain record. At the end of each week, write down three things you did, as facts, with no qualifier: finished, solved, sent. When the fraud feeling comes, read the record instead of arguing with the feeling. Then, the next time you are praised, say thank you and nothing after it.
Why do I feel like a fraud at my new job?
Because a new job is all exposure and no record yet. The whole room is watching how you do. You have no past wins there to stand on. So every kind word from a new manager feels like a loan. Start the plain record on the first week, not the first year. The record is how the room stops being new.
Is it normal to feel lost in a new job?
Being lost in a new job is ordinary. You do not know where things are, who decides what, or how the work is judged. That is information about how old the job is, not about you. The pattern is different. It reads being lost as a sign you were hired by mistake. Ask the question you would ask if you felt qualified.
Is this who I am, or is this a pattern running?
Test it across rooms. If the same heat comes when a friend says you look good, or a partner says thank you, it is not about your job. It is the same move, in a different room. The file this page comes from describes it in all of them.
This is not who you are. It is a pattern running. Those are different things, and the difference is the entire method.
THE FULL FILE
This page is one room. Compliment Deflection is one of nine files in the archive and it runs in all of them, which is the fastest way to tell a pattern from a situation. The full file describes the same circuit outside this arena entirely.

Why do I feel like a fraud when I get good feedback?
Because good feedback puts you in view, and the pattern reads being in view as exposure. The fraud feeling fires hardest on good results, not bad ones.
Does feeling like a fraud mean I am bad at my job?
No. The feeling does not read your work. It reads attention. It fires the same way whether the work was strong or weak.
Why do I give the credit to my team every time?
Handing the credit away ends the moment of being looked at. That relief is the reward. Sharing credit is fine when it is a choice. Here it is a reflex.
What is the body signal at work?
Heat in the face and a tight chest when your name comes up for something good. It is what you feel as the pattern starts, a few seconds before the deflection.
What should I say when my boss praises me?
Thank you. Then stop. No list of who helped unless you were asked, and no mention of the flaw. Let the silence sit.
Why does a promotion make the fraud feeling worse?
A promotion raises the height you could fall from. The pattern prices the fall, so the feeling grows with the title.
How do I keep a plain record of my work?
Once a week, write three things you did, as facts. Finished the draft. Solved the billing problem. No qualifier, no but. Read it back when the feeling comes.
Why do I feel fake in meetings?
Meetings are exposure with witnesses. The heat rises with the number of people looking. The fake feeling is the same signal, louder.
Do I need to know where this came from?
No. Looking back between moments is optional. If you do not know where it started, that is a complete answer. The practice does not need the history.
Is this a clinical claim?
No. This archive makes no clinical claims and names nothing you have. It describes an observed sequence with a body signal and a timing. Clinical questions belong with a clinician.
THE ARCHIVES
The same move fires with friends and with a partner, not only at work. If you want to know whether this is your primary pattern, the one that runs most often, the assessment names it.
